Secrets

They say a wolf truly gets to know pain when his mate dies—when the bond that holds them together is severed. Or when by some cruel twist of fate, he loses his wolf and has to live out the rest of his life wolfless. He goes from being one of the strongest beings to ever exist; from an apex predator to being nothing. From being a notable member of the pack to a wolfless omega. A worthless piece of junk cast aside. His nightmares have just begun. The intensity of the whooshing wind rising from beneath the cliff sent cold chills into Luca's body as he stood there. His eyes stared down at the valley that spread 2000ft below, its grassland snaking through the hills that decked the grassland. His hands balled into fists as his eyes glazed, surveying the large expanse of land down below, his bare chested body heaving like the push and pull of the tides. His head tilted gently as he listened. The band of deer that drank from the riverbank below pranced about playfully, oblivious of the danger that hovered 2000ft above them, watching their every move. “Noah,” Luca growled through gritted teeth, the pang of guilt overwhelming his entire body. “He didn't have to die like this. He had only carried out orders. My orders!” he clenched his fists tightly. “Those wolves who did this to you will pay,” his voice quivered as the guilt turned to bile in his throat. “They will f*****g pay for it with their lives. I'll make sure of it!” ***** Jenine's POV “You are not going to believe what happened to me,” I cooed when I finally found Laura. When she finally found me I'd say. I'm sure she scented me out with that wonderful nose of hers. Must be great having such abilities. I initially didn't think much about becoming a werewolf but being here in Lupestone, living amongst wolves—though not immediately but gradually—made me feel I was missing out on something big. Was it something in the food? Or the air? I'd found myself secretly wishing I could do all those werewolf things Laura could do—catching a scent, the freakingly awesome agility, the sharp hearing, fast healing… And that glow in her eyes when her wolf stirs during the full moon. I always found myself admiring it and wondering how it would feel to be one of them. How it would feel to be part of a pack. “What happened?” Laura asked as the cashier packed up what we'd bought in plastic bags, her machine beeping as she checked us out. “You sound like you hit the jackpot.” “I might as well have,” I chirped as I held onto the clothes Laura had bought. She had had a hard time deciding which would be a good fit for me and had ended up buying a whole lot. The car chirped as Laura pressed the unlock button. “Out with it girl,” she said. She turned the key in the ignition. The car hummed in response to her. “Did you meet a boy?” she glanced over at me and back to focus on the road as she eased the car onto the freeway. “He was glorious,” I said as I saw this face again. Those eyes… his jawline… those arms… “I'm having a hard time concentrating on my driving with your heart beating like crazy inside your chest. I really hope he's worth everything you're feeling,” she said as she cut around the bend. We were almost home. “He's totally worth it, trust me,” Her eyebrows knitted together as she looked at me, an inquisitive look in her eyes. “What happened to the shy Jenine ? The scared Jenine that came to Lupestone?” She eased the car gently in front of the house. “She's evolving?” I said, my lips quirking into a grin. “You said it yourself that the Moon Goddess might mate me to a lycan prince.” “That's not how it works,” she laughed softly, her body swaying gracefully as she took out the plastic bags from the car. “You have to have a wolf to be mated and the wolf you met most certainly wasn't a lycan prince.” “You didn't even see him,” I protested. “I don't need to see him before I know,” she quipped. “Did he smile at you?” “Yes.” “And he asked for your name?” “Yes.” “What else did he do?” “He asked to hang out sometime.” “Yep, definitely not a lycan prince,” she pushed the door shut. “He also said he'd come find me?” A heavy hush fell amongst us as Laura froze, the tension hanging in the air. “Ah well,” she shrugged, moving into the house. “Did you get the name of this handsome devil that's got your heart thumping like a drum?” “I believe he said his name to be Elisha.” I saw Laura pause again, her body getting taut. I peered into her face but she avoided my eyes completely. “What pack is he from?” she asked. “Our pack. The Nightmoon pack.” ‘Our pack' felt strange as it left my mouth. I didn't think of myself as part of the pack yet, especially as I had no wolf. Yet. There was no way I was meant to be entirely wolfless especially after Dew had said my mum was a very strong Luna. “Someone you know?” I asked as I noticed Laura getting a bit fidgety. “Not at all,” she smiled at me. With her lips. Her eyes didn't smile. I wasn't buying any of this. The way her eyes had twitched when I had mentioned his name… The way she had paused… She was definitely hiding something from me.
