Chapter 1: DREADED ENCOUNTER
DREADED CASSIE'S POV I jerked back as Sandra threw the faux fur jacket on my desk. It made a louder sound than it should and I raised an eyebrow pulling it apart. The fabric fell off to review a small pack of beer. "Seriously Sandy?" I muttered with the disapproving stare my mother always shot me when I did anything out of manners. Her face turned red and she picked up the beer. I told you no to call me that," Sandra always hated that nickname; said it reminded her of a certain cartoon character but that wasn't going to stop me from calling her such. Just like it never stopped her from interrupting my reading sessions. "Isn't that enough studying for one day?" She whined, opening a beer. I watched her with a bland expression. She only asked such questions whenever she wanted me to accompany her somewhere. And it mostly never ended well. Last month we got arrested at a club and I had no interest in repeating such an incident. "Says the best student in the whole of medicine," I muttered, flipping through the pages of the awkwardly large textbook. "Just because I'm a student doesn't mean we can't have fun. Common Cassie you have to live a little," she rested her head on my desk pleading with her eyes. Normally that would work but I ignored her, focusing on the words. "I already bought the tickets please," she muttered and after hours of pleading and crying I finally agreed. "Okay this would be the last time. Where are we going," her lips stretched into a wide grin as she pulled out two tickets. I took it off her hand and my heart dropped to my stomach. I tried to hide my displeasure clearing my throat but her expression was enough sign that she saw through it. "Sandra these are tickets for a hockey match," I uttered and she nodded, not getting the message. "Sandra my step brother plays for the team," She nodded again and I felt my patience wearing thin. "I'm not going," I dumped the tickets in her hand, taking my seat. Sometimes I forget that Sandra willams was the only child of a wealthy businessman and she was used to getting her way. I had no idea how she did it but I sat behind the rink watching the players skate in. Luckily she had picked the perfect outfit. I was surprisingly warm despite the freezing environment. The match started and I watched in a daze while Sandra cheered beside me. I barely paid attention to the game but my eyes never left a certain player. Player 34. Daelan Slate. The captain of the hockey team and my step-brother. I couldn't see his face due to the helmet and how fast he was but I knew that build anywhere. I also had everything about him memorized with or without my knowledge. We watched him score goal after goal and the match of three hours ended with his team winning. Sandra stood up with the agility of a deer and I followed clapping with less zeal. I wanted to be anywhere but here. Things never went well around him. "Great, you had a good time. Can we go now?" I asked, trying to sound as cheerful as possible but failed miserably. "Go now? No, we have to say hi. Common," she muttered, pulling me by my hand. I yanked it out of her grip and she turned staring at me with sad blue eyes "Don't give me that look. You can go alone if you want to. I don't have to come," I grumbled. The thought of running into Dealan was traumatic enough. Memories of all the time we spent around each other flashed before my eyes and I cringed. "What's your problem? I know he's your step brother but you act like he ran over your dog. Just do this for me. Please!" Sandra sang and I nodded, not wanting to bear the weight of saying no. She led me to the back rooms and I sucked in a deep breath before stepping in. The room reeked of masculinity and we stuck out like a sore thumb but like always Sandra had no problem. I watched her scan the room, her eyes shining as they landed on a particular someone. Her hand left mine and she skipped towards his direction. I should have known the only reason someone like Sandra would sit and absorb a three hour game was for something far better, flashy. Axel, my step brother's friend and one of the most handsome men on earth. I watched them with such immense focus that I had not noticed the guy standing beside me. "Hey sunshine," a voice whispered and I turned to meet the chocolate orbs of a guy. He was obviously part of the team and looked like your typical jock or playboy. Blonde hair over six feet. I gave him a small smile looking away. He stood still and I tried my best to ignore him hoping he would take the hint but it turned out he was blind. "What's a pretty girl like you doing here?" he asked, licking his bottom lips and I felt the urge to haul. "I came with someone," I muttered taking a step away from him but he took one step closer. "I thought I'd be lonely this night but it seemed fate had other plans in store," he displayed his pearly white teeth but I only grew more uncomfortable by the minute. He had obviously never been told no. My gaze darted to Sandra but she rambled on about something while Axel listened with a bored face. Normally I would feel bad for her but I seemed to be in a tighter fix. "I'm not interested, thank you." my words hit him and he let out a loud laugh obviously in denial. "You can't be ser-" he never finished his words as a familiar voice beat him to it. "You speak English Jacob. She said no.”
