Chapter One: The Summer We Fell
The South Carolina air was thick with the scent of salt and magnolias, the warm ocean breeze tangling in Lila’s curls as she walked barefoot down the wooden pier. Myrtle Beach stretched in front of her, golden under the glow of the setting sun, the waves lapping softly against the shore. She had never felt this free before—untethered, reckless, young in a way she didn’t quite know how to describe. Behind her, the laughter of her best friends drifted up from the dance hall, where couples twirled in the dim neon light, their dresses swinging to the rhythm of a slow, dreamy shag tune. But Lila’s heart was racing for a different reason. She wasn’t inside with them anymore. She was here, on the pier, waiting for him. “You came.” The deep, honeyed voice sent a shiver through her as she turned to face Noah. His smile was easy, confident, but there was something softer in his eyes when he looked at her. “I almost didn’t.” Lila tucked a stray curl behind her ear, her fingers still warm from the heat of dancing. “But I guess I wanted to see if you were serious about that walk.” Noah chuckled and leaned against the railing. “Serious about walking? No. Serious about spending more time with you? Absolutely.” Lila exhaled a laugh, shaking her head. “You’re something else, you know that?” He grinned, pushing off the rail and offering his hand. “Come on, let’s get out of here. I wanna show you something.” She hesitated—just for a second. There were rules, unspoken but deeply ingrained, about what girls like her did and didn’t do. But rules had never felt as important as the way Noah was looking at her now, like she was someone worth knowing, someone worth chasing. Hand in hand, they wandered away from the lights and noise, down the beach where the sand was cool beneath their feet. The boardwalk music faded into the hush of waves and the occasional distant laughter of other late-night beachgoers. “Here,” Noah said, stopping abruptly and pulling her toward a small inlet where the water glowed silver in the moonlight. “This is my favorite spot.” Lila turned in slow circles, taking it all in. The sea stretched endlessly, the sky above them an inky canvas of stars. It was quieter here, away from expectations, from the future she was supposed to have all figured out. Here, she could breathe. “You don’t belong in that world, you know.” She glanced at him, frowning slightly. “What world?” Noah smiled, brushing a thumb over her knuckles. “The one that tells you who you have to be. The one that makes you feel like you can’t make your own choices.” Lila’s throat tightened, his words slipping through the cracks she hadn’t realized were already there. “And you think you know who I am?” “I think you’re still figuring that out.” Her heart pounded, an unfamiliar thrill coursing through her. Maybe he was right. Maybe this summer wasn’t just about sneaking away to dance halls and late-night laughter with friends. Maybe it was about letting go of everything she thought she should be—and finally finding out who she really was. Noah’s fingers traced gently along her palm before he leaned in, his breath warm against her cheek. Lila closed her eyes, and for the first time in a long time, she let herself fall.
