Chapter 1- A Weird Introduction
April Scott was a new intern in the Anesthesiology Department at Northwood University Medical Center, and despite rehearsing how calm she would look, her nerves betrayed her. The lobby was a beehive of activity; patients, stretchers, nurses, orderlies, and that familiar smell of disinfectant that screamed welcome to the real world. After showing her ID at the security desk, she hurried toward the elevator. Her department was on the twelfth floor. The elevator doors slid open to reveal a tall, young, gorgeous man in a spotless white longsleeved shirt, sleeves folded once with precision. His brown wavy hair looked as though it had been styled with a broom, messy, tousled, yet unfairly perfect. He couldn’t be more than thirty. A crisp lab coat hung over his shoulder. Oh… he must be a doctor, she thought. “Are you coming in or not?” His voice was deep, stern, and impatient. She rolled her eyes before stepping in. The doors closed. “Did you just roll your eyes at me?” he growled. April took a deep breath and kept quiet. He scoffed. “You’re ignoring me?” “What?” She glared up at him. “Are you normal?” he fired. “I should be the one asking you that.” “Really?” his brows went high. “What did I do wrong, huh?” “Why did you roll your eyes at me, stupid?” April froze. Was he real? “Are you actually a doctor or is that lab coat for someone else?” He tilted his head. “Good question. What do I look like to you?” A psycho, she thought, biting her lip as she stared at her feet. “You're still gonna ignore...” “A psycho,” she blurted just as the elevator stopped. She bolted out. She rushed to the locker room where a cluster of nurses were already chattering loudly. Wasn’t it too early? She tried not to stare, but they all paused and stared at her. Was she the only new intern? Impossible. This hospital had over three hundred staff. She glanced down at herself. Her straight, flower-patterned dress was one of her best, even though her dad bought it from a thrift store and she had fixed a tear in the sleeve just this morning. She tugged at the seam to check. No tear. Good. “Did you guys just take the same elevator?” a commanding voice demanded. April turned. The girl looked like she had the word ‘spoiled rich kid’ sprawled across her forehead. “I... excuse me?” “You weren’t alone in the elevator, were you?” she drilled on. “No…” “So you two know each other? You’re dating?” “Excuse me? No!” “Then how were you in the same elevator? He doesn’t ever share elevators with minions.” Minions? The room was silent. All eyes locked on April. “I don’t get it,” April said, genuinely lost and bewildered. “What don’t you get?” the girl snapped. “It seems like you two are dating, and you had a lovers’ quarrel which made you stalk out.” “Oh… that?” April laughed dryly. Before the interrogation could continue, an emergency alarm blared. Several nurses, including her interrogator, rushed out after giving her a hard stare. April exhaled in relief. “Hey! I’m Ivy,” a small girl with a warm smile said, extending her hand. April shook it. “April. Nice to meet you.” “Not nice meeting Lana, though,” Ivy murmured. “And certainly not on your first day.” “Lana?” “The one questioning you.” “Oh… why?” Ivy shrugged. “Just remember what happens when you cross the road when the traffic light is red.” “Huh?” “Exactly. You’re not supposed to get it.” “But what was that talk about the guy I shared the elevator with?” “You really don’t know him?” “No… I don’t.” Ivy’s phone beeped. “Sorry, I gotta run.” April sighed. “God… not on my first day.” She quickly changed into her scrubs. Dr. Adrian Smith wasn’t okay. Not after sharing an elevator with her. He should never have let her in. His fault. She actually dared to call him a psycho. What gave her the nerves and effrontery? “Professor Smith,” Naomi, the head nurse of the anesthesiology department, called. “Yeah?” “You asked to see all the new interns before their orientation.” “Yes. Let them in.” He smirked. He couldn’t wait to see her face when she realized who she had disrespected. April Scott. Anesthesiology Department. He had memorized the name on her badge without trying. Four interns walked in, two guys, two ladies. He scanned quickly. Where was she? “Is this all of you?” he demanded. They exchanged confused glances. “I said, is there anyone left?” He turned to Naomi. “Yes sir. One more intern. She should be here soon.” “And what the hell is she waiting for?” He slammed his fist on the table. “A special invitation?” His irritation spiked. “You know what? All of you leave. Naomi, bring them back when the missing princess decides to show up.” He stood abruptly and left the office, choosing to use the staff bathroom. Why was he feeling this way? She wasn’t the first beautiful lady he had seen with curves that could distract a saint. Or maybe she was. He rubbed his head, opened the bathroom door and almost crashed into her. April froze in shock, having just pulled down her scrub pants.
