Paula stared at the door when it creaked open and a disappointed sigh fell off her lips when someone else walked in. She had been unable to take her eyes off the door ever since Melissa was taken away by Madam Riela.
Paula knew how scary Madam Riela could be and she was worried sick about Melissa. What was she doing? What had Madam Riela done to her?
Paula sighed again, biting her fingers nervously as her eyes kept drifting to the closed door. She had been expecting Melissa's return since and it was already three hours since she left.
Paula knew she had no right to worry about Melissa, especially after what she had done to her but she couldn't help but worry. She needed to apologise too. It hadn't been her intention to betray her friend that way; she had just been too scared to say the truth. Now that she was thinking about it, she felt awful.
It didn't even help that everyone in the room was talking about how Melissa was a slave. It had been three hours yet the news was still on everyone's lips and they couldn't stop talking about it. Paula felt bad, though she was upset that Melissa hadn't told her.
The door creaked open again and Paula looked up in anticipation only to cringe when she saw Ivy walk in, a smug smile on her face as she walked in. The room grew silent the moment she got in and she began to walk in Paula's direction.
Paula noticed this and she lowered her eyes, hoping that the redhead would go to her bed instead and leave her be. She had been making fun of both her and Melissa ever since the event.
It looked like she was the happiest person in the room and she kept regarding Melissa as a slave, laughing heartily with her minions.
"Missing your slave friend already?" A deep manly voice asked and the hair on Paula's skin stood as fear gripped her. She knew who it was and her heart began to pound loudly in her chest. Why was she here at her bed?
"I'm not." She muttered, trying not to look at Ivy who was standing next to her bed.
"Really? How am I even sure you aren't a slave like her? Birds of a feather flock together after all."
"I'm not a slave. We got hired the same day. You know that." Paula mumbled and Ivy shrugged.
"Yeah, but you could still be a slave."
"I'm not." Paula gritted her teeth and Ivy chuckled.
"You were wise enough not to have spoken a word." Ivy reached out to pat her head and Paula cringed within herself. The redhead disgusted her and her hand on her hair felt like the claws of a toad. But she sat still, unable to push her hand away.
"You just saved yourself from ending up like someone I know." The smirk on Ivy's face was sick and Paula wondered what she meant by that.
"By the way, I hope your slave friend will read the handwriting on the wall and never return to this room. You don't wanna know what I do to slaves."
"What do you mean?" Paula muttered but before she could get an answer to her question, she heard a scream and everyone jumped to their feet, confusion written on the girls' faces as they rushed out of the room.
Paula immediately jumped down from her bed, curiosity on her face as she followed her roommates out of the room, leaving Ivy standing by her bed.
The scream had come from the bathroom and a lady with long black hair tied in a ponytail was screaming her lungs out. Beside her was the corpse of another lady lying in the pool of her own blood. It was such an eerie sight to see and Paula shut her eyes tightly, her lips quivering.
The bathroom was now filled with many ladies and murmurs filled the air as they all spoke at the same time. The ones at the back kept standing on their toes, their necks stretching as they struggled to see for themselves. Paula was lucky to have been part of the early birds who stood at the front so she had a perfect view.
"Oh my goodness!"
"What happened to her?"
"Who is she?"
Questions of all sorts filled the air as they all stared at the corpse.
"What's going on here?" Madam Riela asked as she walked into the bathroom and the girls began to part way for her so she could walk through. Everyone was now silent as they watched her.
Madam Riela's eyes narrowed when she saw the corpse and she turned to the lady who had screamed.
"What happened?"
"I don't know," the lady was shaking all over. "I walked in and I saw her lying on the floor with a knife in her hand. I think she took her own life."
The murmuring resumed as everyone had something to say about the event.
"Silence!" Madam Riela yelled and everyone kept quiet.
"Who knows who she is?" She asked.
"She's a fellow worker." A voice piped in.
"I know." Madam Riela snapped. "I'm asking who knows her personally. What's her name? Whose friend is she?"
Everyone exchanged puzzled looks with one another but no one spoke.
"Does it mean no one knows who she is?" Madam Riela looked irritated.
Meanwhile, Paula's eyes widened a bit when she took a closer look at the dead girl. She brought a palm to cover her mouth when the realisation finally dawned on her.
Wasn't this the lady who had left to call Madam Riela when the fight between Melissa and Ivy started? Was this what Ivy had meant when she had told her she would have ended up like someone if she had spoken out? Had Ivy gone after this girl just to get back at her for reporting to Madam Riela? Had Ivy done this?
"Return to your rooms. I'm gonna get to the bottom of this and find out what truly happened. You had better speak out now if you know anything about this because when I find out, I'm gonna make you pay dearly." Madam Riela threatened no one in particular, before signalling everyone to leave the large bathroom.
The girls turned to go, mumbling words to one another as they left but Paula could barely move until Madam Riela screamed at her.
"Get lost!"
Trudging to her room, Paula felt sick in the stomach and there was a need for her to gag. She gently placed her hand on the wall, holding her tummy as tried to calm herself.
"You understand what I mean now, don't you?" The dreadful voice of Ivy filled her ears and Paula immediately looked up. She took a step back when she saw Ivy's smiling face.
"Did you do this?" She whispered, still taking a step back till her back hit the wall.
"Did you kill that poor girl because she told out on you?"
"What do you think?" Ivy's lip turned up, a fiendish glint in her eyes.
"How could you?" Paula whimpered, fear enveloping her as she held the wall. Girls were walking down the lobby but no one dared to interfere. Ivy was known throughout the building and no one wanted to mess with her. It was in times like this that Paula wished Melissa was with her. Melissa was the only one who stood up to Ivy.
"That wasn't worth her life. That was so trivial."
"It seems like that to me. What she did is worth her life and more. In her next life, she'll learn to mind her business and never interfere."
"You're sick," Paula whispered, tears streaming down her cheeks for the poor girl who had lost her life for nothing. She had always known that Ivy was dangerous but she had never thought the redhead would go as far as killing anyone.
"I might be." The redhead shrugged. "That's why you need to warn that slave to stay away from me."
Paula's eyes twitched with anger and her hands balled into a fist by her side. She wished she could punch the redhead directly in the face.
"So you killed her?" Paula's lips quivered.
"I was just joking." The side of Ivy's eyes crinkled as she laughed suddenly. "Don't be so quick to believe. I didn't kill anyone." She tapped Paula's cheeks slightly, before walking away with a sweet smile on her face.
Dread filled Paula as she watched her walk away. She needed to do something quickly so Melissa would not end up like the poor girl. It was now very clear that Ivy was a demon with no feelings. Paula knew she needed to save Melissa from her. That was the least she could do for Melissa after betraying her that way.
