Chapter 1
CHAPTER 1: THE NIGHT OF REJECTION
The full moon hung high over the dense forests of Pennsylvania, its silver light spilling across the rolling hills and casting long shadows over the town of Blackridge. The quiet streets were empty, but beyond them, deep in the forest, a different kind of life thrived.
The Blackthorn pack territory sat atop a ridge, overlooking the small town. From a distance, it looked like an abandoned mansion, surrounded by towering pines and shrouded in mist. But anyone who knew better understood that inside those walls lived something ancient, something powerful, a world ruled by wolves with hearts as fierce as fire.
And tonight, that world was waiting for me.
I adjusted the strap of my long white gown and tried to steady my trembling hands. The fabric flowed around my ankles, soft against my skin, but nothing could soften the dread curling in my stomach. My reflection caught in the polished windowpane of the mansion. Pale skin, dark hair falling like a curtain over my shoulders, silver eyes shimmering in the moonlight, I looked every part the girl who had dreamed of being Luna. But inside, my heart felt hollow.
This was supposed to be my night.
The Alpha Ceremony.
The moment I had imagined for years. The day I would officially become Luna, the mate of Alpha Kael Blackthorn.
But I had learned in the last few months that fate had a cruel sense of irony. Kael, the Alpha who had captured my heart from the moment I could remember, had barely spoken to me since the Moon Goddess had revealed we were mates. Every attempt to reach him was met with cold indifference, every smile unanswered.
And yet, tonight, I had to walk into the hall full of hundreds of wolves, all expecting to see me ascend beside him. All expecting me to shine.
Lily, my best friend, appeared at my side. Her blonde hair was tied back, her green gown perfectly fitted, and her eyes wide with concern.
“Aria,” she said softly, “you really don’t have to do this if you’re not ready.”
I forced a shaky smile. “I don’t have a choice.”
She hesitated, then squeezed my hand. “Then you’ll just have to survive it, like always.”
I laughed weakly, though it came out more like a sigh. She was right, as always. I could survive. I had to.
Together, we walked down the narrow path leading to the mansion. The moonlight glinted off the frost-covered grass, and the air smelled of pine and damp earth. The distant hoot of an owl echoed in the stillness, and for a moment, I wished the night would swallow me whole.
Inside, the grand hall of the mansion was already filled with wolves of all ages. Warriors in ceremonial attire stood near the front, while elders and families filled the polished wooden benches. Silver banners lined the walls, each bearing the Blackthorn emblem, a crescent moon encircled by sharp claws. The air thrummed with anticipation.
I felt every eye on me the moment I stepped through the doors. Whispers rippled across the crowd:
“That’s her.”
“The Alpha’s mate.”
“She’s going to be Luna.”
My cheeks burned. I wanted to shrink into the shadows and disappear, but I forced myself to walk forward.
At the end of the hall, Kael stood on the raised ceremonial platform. Tall, broad-shouldered, exuding dominance with every movement, he was dressed in black ceremonial attire, his hair falling slightly over his sharp gray eyes. The entire room seemed to hum with his presence.
I swallowed hard.
Mate.
The word echoed in my mind like a quiet drumbeat.
I should have felt joy. Anticipation. Pride.
Instead, my chest tightened with an inexplicable fear.
Kael’s eyes met mine. For a moment, I thought I saw something, hesitation, uncertainty, maybe even recognition of the bond we shared. But just as quickly, the hardness returned. Cold. Distant. A wall between us that I could not break.
The head elder cleared his throat. “Aria Nightshade, step forward.”
I climbed the wooden steps, each one heavier than the last. My wolf stirred faintly inside me, the bond whispering through my veins, begging me to fight, to claim what was mine.
But I didn’t get the chance.
Kael’s voice cut through the hall, low, sharp, and devastating. “Stop.”
The room fell into stunned silence. Even the wind outside seemed to hold its breath.
I froze.
The elder frowned. “Alpha, this is highly irregular, ”
“I said stop,” Kael interrupted, his gaze unwavering. “This ceremony will not proceed as planned.”
Murmurs rose among the pack members. Shock. Confusion. Some even looked excited, though I couldn’t understand why.
I opened my mouth, my voice barely above a whisper. “Kael… what are you, ?”
He stepped closer to the edge of the platform, his gray eyes piercing mine. “I, Alpha Kael Blackthorn, reject you, Aria Nightshade, as my mate.”
The words hit me like a physical blow.
The room gasped.
A few wolves muttered under their breath, but the sound was drowned out by the ringing in my ears.
Reject me.
I felt my knees buckle. The world seemed to tilt sideways, and my wolf howled in pain within me, a scream of fury and heartbreak.
“No… no, this can’t, ” I whispered, my hands clutching my chest as if I could physically hold my heart together.
“You are not fit to be Luna,” Kael continued, his voice devoid of emotion. “This pack deserves strength, not weakness. I will not allow anyone to stand beside me who cannot rise to power.”
My vision blurred. Tears streamed down my face as the humiliation spread like fire through my veins.
Then, I saw her.
Selena Virel, standing beside him, smiling as though she had won some cruel game. Her red gown shimmered under the moonlight streaming through the windows, her confidence radiating from every inch of her perfect form.
“She will be my Luna,” Kael announced.
The whispers turned into laughter, and I could feel every eye in the room judging me, condemning me. My best friend, Lily, rushed forward, but I gently pushed her back.
I couldn’t face anyone. Not now.
I turned and fled.
The cold night air hit me like a shock as I burst out the mansion doors. Frost crunched under my bare feet as I ran down the stone path into the forest. Every step felt like leaving a piece of my soul behind, every breath a reminder of my rejection.
I stumbled, falling onto my hands and knees, my tears freezing against my cheeks. The wolves behind me, the pack, my friends, even Kael, were a distant memory now.
The forest swallowed me.
And then I felt it.
A warmth inside my chest, unlike anything I had ever felt. Fierce. Powerful. Ancient.
A voice echoed softly in my mind.
“They rejected you… but you are not prey.”
My eyes widened. My heart thudded in my chest as the silver glow of the moonlight seemed to respond to me, shimmering across the frost-covered forest floor. My wolf stirred, cautiously at first, then with rising curiosity and strength.
The shadows shifted. Three figures emerged from between the trees, rogue wolves. Their yellow eyes gleamed, fur matted and ragged. Hunger radiated from them, and in their stance, I recognized the deadly intent of wolves without a pack.
I froze.
The largest of the rogues lunged. My instinct screamed at me to flee, but I was trapped.
And then… the warmth flared.
A silver light burst from my chest, illuminating the forest in blinding brilliance. The rogue froze mid-leap, eyes wide with shock, and stumbled backward, yelping in surprise. The other two wolves hesitated, snarling, unsure of what force had erupted before them.
I fell to my knees, trembling, staring at my glowing hands.
“What… what is happening to me?” I whispered.
The voice spoke again, calm and powerful, as if from somewhere ancient within me.
“You are not prey. You are the blood of the Luna Queen. Rise, and claim what is yours.”
The wolves didn’t wait for a second warning. They turned and fled into the shadows, leaving me alone, trembling, yet alive.
I sank into the snow, my body shaking from cold and shock. The moonlight reflected off the frost-covered trees, but something inside me had changed. My wolf stirred, not weak and timid as before, but fierce, sharp, ready.
The girl who had walked into the Blackthorn pack mansion a broken child was gone.
And though I did not yet understand the magnitude of it, I knew this:
The Aria Nightshade who had been rejected tonight…
Would never be the same again.
Because the blood of the Luna Queen had awakened.
And it would demand justice.
