"What are those beacons for anyway? Is it for the wagons or for us? It definitely looks cumbersome but I am sure it would be of some use to you earlier, am I right?" I asked as Marcel got one of his assistant to unhook one and passed it to me. I looked at the design and found that the outer layer of the beacon or lantern was made of some kind of paper that had a light waxy feeling and I assumed it was meant to make it waterproof. It was made of bamboo strips as its frame and inside at the top end was a small hook where one could hang a miner's lamp inside. It was shaped like a huge beehive, but very cylindrical with two ends exposed to allow draught and hot air to move in and escape easily. I looked at it and asked if it's for me as Marcel chuckled.
