Chapter 18Evelyn Evelyn jumped when the homeless man lying on the sidewalk in front of the boarded-up building suddenly sat up, clutching his dirty knapsack to his chest. He raised his fist toward Evelyn. “Get the f**k away from me!” Cory immediately stepped between Evelyn and the filthy, wild-eyed vagrant. Still holding the knapsack in a death grip, the man turned toward the building and curled himself in a ball on the broken concrete before pulling a tattered blanket over his head. The stench of urine was overpowering. Suddenly Evelyn is in the dark musty building again. The smell. God, the smell! Wings flutter around her. Birds? Bats? She has to get out! Scant light from the broken wood panel promises fresh air and Evelyn runs toward it. Halfway there, she slips on something squishy
