Chapter 26Evelyn The next morning, Evelyn waited a full ten minutes after hearing the door close to be sure Cory didn’t return for some forgotten item before she finally got up and dressed. Retrieving a Walmart bag from under the kitchen sink, Evelyn put her meager belongings inside, wrapping her pearls in a paper towel and zipping them into a small plastic bag. She then made herself a tuna sandwich—Cory jokingly vowed to never eat tuna again—and hoped she’d find her way back to her old life before her next meal. It might be foolhardy to strike out on her own, but she no longer felt safe around Cory, or Miss Diana, sadly. Cory’s angry outbursts the previous evening left Evelyn so shaken, she had hardly slept. Never mind the crazy claims that it was fifty-five years later than Evelyn knew
