Chapter I
One sunny morning, Zelene was softly roused from her cloud-soaring dream by the sound of her alarm clock. She stretched and yawned, blinked out sleep, and realized it was her first day of college summer classes.
When Zelene jumped out of bed, she thought, "Finally, the summer adventure begins!" She rushed through her morning ritual, excited about what the day would bring. Her enthusiasm was evident as she said farewell to her mother, kissing her, after having a quick breakfast of toast and orange juice and a refreshing wash.
Zelene headed to university while the sun was already high in the sky, warming the streets. A mild breeze rustled the trees, while above, birds chirped a happy tune. She saw her pals Nina, Tasha, and Unity speaking animatedly close to the entrance as she got closer to the main building.
With a wave, Nina exclaimed, "Hey, Zelene! Excited for today?"
Zelene smiled and joined her pals. "Absolutely! I can't wait to see what this summer class has in store."
Tasha excitedly nodded. "And can you believe we're going to be juniors next semester? Time flies!"
Unity laughed. "Tell me about it. Feels like just yesterday we were freshmen trying to find our way around campus."
Their talk erupted with excitement as they entered the building together. They talked about what they wanted to get out of the class, the projects they wanted to work on, and potential new students.
"With my backpack adjusted, I hope we get to work with some interesting people," Zelene remarked. "It's always exciting to hear different perspectives."
Nina gave a nod of approval. "Definitely. Plus, it'll be nice to make some new friends before the semester starts."
The four friends laughed and grinned as they walked into the classroom, eager to start their summer journey together. Excitement filled the air as they took their seats, resonating with the promise of undiscovered friendships and new adventures.
The girls chatted animatedly about their expectations for the summer course as they headed to their first lesson. Zelene, whose curly hair bounced in the sunlight, expressed her excitement at exploring thoroughly into the subject matter, while Tasha, whose eyes gleamed with inquiry, looked forward to the challenges that were ahead. Nina, who always makes people laugh, made jokes about bringing snacks to class, while Unity, who is cool under pressure, quietly said she wanted to do well and take advantage of the chance.
Their laughing echoed around the college campus until Nigel and Chase, two of their closest friends, abruptly showed up. With a wicked sparkle in his eyes and an easy smile, Chase rushed towards the females, radiating an irresistible energy.
"Hey, ladies!" with a booming voice, said Chase. "Ready to conquer another summer of academia?"
The girls greeted Chase and Nigel with hugs and giggles, their casual conversation showing how close they were to one another. Ever the charmer, Chase took a seat next to Zelene, and their companions began to whisper and look at him knowingly as a result of their closeness.
"Zelene, my dear, you know what time it is," grinned and flashed his phone. "First-day-of-class selfies! Come on, let's memorialize this moment."
Zelene rolled her eyes, but her amusement was hidden by the smile that tugged at the edges of her lips. She pretended to be annoyed and taunted, "Oh, Chase, must we?" as she went for her phone.
With a laugh, Chase put his arm over Zelene's shoulders and they took picture after picture, showing their group's happiness and friendship. "Of course we must! How else will we document our epic summer class adventures?"
Zelene sighed dramatically and gave in, posing with her companions while Chase took the last photo. Zelene couldn't help but be thankful for the friendship, the laughing, and the countless experiences that awaited them in the days to come, the warmth of their friendship still hanging in the air.
With a chuckle still hanging in the air after their spontaneous photo shoot, Zelene and her friends' focus was abruptly diverted to the classroom door. The crowd was riveted when the two male students casually walked in.
The first boy walked confidently to a seat at the rear of the room, his sharp features and disheveled hair giving him an air of might. Zelene sensed something about him; something about his tall stature and toned body made her feel pulled to him. Zelene followed him as he took a seat, her heart pounding at the sudden desire.
Zelene was captivated by the mystery boy and found herself in a silent conversation with him. They locked eyes across the room, and for what seemed like an age, a spark began to ignite between them. Zelene's heartbeat accelerated, her head buzzing with a gazillion unsaid ideas as she attempted to interpret the allure she experienced from him.
Zelene was fascinated at first, but as the seconds turned into a minute, she felt a wave of humiliation. She looked away, the intensity of the moment too much for her to handle as heat rose to her cheeks. She looked to the front of the room, startled, her thoughts racing with a million different feelings.
Unity said in a whisper, observing her friend's abrupt change in behavior, "What's wrong, Zelene?"
Zelene mustered a grin but shook her head, trying to gather herself. "Nothing, just... lost in thought," she said, her discomfort evident in her tone.
However, Zelene had a sneaking suspicion that her meeting with the enigmatic lad was only the start of an amazing adventure that would test her beliefs, ignite her interests, and eventually alter her summer in ways she could never have predicted.
Zelene's thoughts were consumed by the image of the nameless individual with the messy hair; his presence had left a lasting impression. Every time she cast a glance in his direction, she couldn't get rid of the familiarity that made her feel both excited and uneasy.
Zelene, whose curiosity was getting the better of her, leaned over to Unity and spoke in a barely audible whisper. Her gaze darted to the back of the room where Mr. Messy Hair sat and she said, "Hey, Unity, do you happen to know the name of the guy who entered earlier?"
Unity, the ever-dependable friend, knitted her brow thoughtfully and then nodded slowly. She looked reflective and said, "Hmm, I'm not sure about the first one, but the last guy who came in... I think his name is Samuel. We used to be neighbors, but I haven't spoken to him in ages."
Zelene nodded, her thoughts racing with the knowledge she had just acquired. Silently repeating the name Samuel. However, the other boy's identity remained unclear and his name continued to be a mystery that lingered just outside her grasp.
The students took their places as the summer class got starting excitement vibrating around the room like static electricity. Their first professor of the day, Mr. Dario Pisani, appeared in front of the class, his presence commanding attention as he grinned warmly and introduced himself.
Mr. Pisani said, "Good morning, class," his voice floating smoothly over the space. "I'm thrilled to be your professor for this class. My name is Dario Pisani, and I'll be guiding you through the wonders of this subject over the next few weeks."
Zelene's gaze wandered to the attendance list that was moving down the first row as Mr. Pisani began going over the syllabus. She had an idea, and she began to feel a sense of excitement as she realized that here was her opportunity to solve the riddle surrounding Mr. Messy Hair's name.
Her pulse was pounding with anticipation as she eagerly watched the attendance sheet move in her direction. When it did arrive in her hands, she quickly skimmed over the names, first focusing on some she recognized, like Samuel's, and then on the one she had been waiting for: Rowan Presley.
Zelene felt a wave of excitement come over her as she saw the name neatly written on the paper in front of her. The mysterious boy with the messy hair, Rowan Presley, the one who had drawn her interest the instant he entered the classroom. She signed her name on the sheet with a feeling of accomplishment and gave it to Unity, her mind already racing with ideas of the encounters that lay ahead.
Zelene couldn't resist glancing at Rowan as the lesson went on, her pulse thumping with eagerness at the chance to get to know him better. She had no idea that the paths they were going to cross would alter her summer in ways she could never have predicted.
Zelene packed up her stuff as the last bell of the day sounded, indicating the end of lessons, her mind still racing with memories of Rowan Presley. She had been excited to see his name on the attendance sheet, but the day had gone by with no real conversation between them. She was disappointed, but she forced herself to ignore it, telling herself there would be more chances to get to know him.
Chase strolled behind her as she left the classroom, his laid-back smile providing a much-needed distraction from her thoughts.
With a worried tone, Chase said, "Hey, Zelene, heading home already?"
Zelene gave a nod, her lips slightly curving into a smile. "Yeah, I've got some things to take care of. But I'll see you tomorrow, right?"
Chase smiled, mischievous lights dancing in his eyes. "You bet! Don't stress a lot, okay?"
Wavering good-bye to her pals, Zelene headed home, her familiar streets disappearing into a haze as her mind wandered. As soon as she got home, she went straight to her room because her laptop was calling to her from its desk.
Zelene opened f*******: and started looking for Rowan Presley with a strong sense of determination. He welcomed her with a profile full of tagged photographs and shared posts that gave her a peek into his life. Her heart was beating with excitement as she browsed through the pictures, looking for hints on his relationship status.
However, Zelene discovered that she was not able to find anything as she looked through his pictures. There were no obvious signs of a girlfriend, no hints of comments or images that suggested someone special. A mixture of confidence and frustration raised up inside of her.
Zelene met her friends at the university gate as the following morning rose light and bright with the promise of a fresh day in the air. Hugs and smiles passed between them as they exchanged greetings, the comforting warmth of their friendship enveloping them like a warm embrace. They made the decision to eat breakfast at the school cafeteria since they had time before their first class and wanted to fill up before the day.
Once they were seated, Tasha brought up a delicate topic, Zelene's ex-boyfriend, in a tone that hinted at hatred.
Tasha questioned, her eyes sparkling with righteous fury, "So, Zelene, have you heard from that jerk Matthew lately?"
When her former partner was brought up, Zelene's smile faded a little, her attempts to move on from the pain of his betrayal still fresh in her memories. "Not really," she said in a careful tone. "And honestly, I'd rather not."
With comprehension, Tasha nodded, her own hate bursting beneath the surface. She shook her head, said, "I still can't believe he had the nerve to cheat on you after three years. I swear, if I ever see him again..."
Zelene silently extended her hand to touch Tasha's arm in appreciation of her steadfast support. With her steady gaze, she murmured softly, "Thanks, Tasha, but I'm okay. I know I deserve better than that."
Nina then added her voice, which was firm but gentle. With warm, loving eyes, she continued, "She's right, Zelene. There are plenty of guys out there who will treat you with the respect and love you deserve."
Unity did little more than give Zelene a reassuring embrace, her quiet presence serving as a gentle reminder that she was never alone in her troubles.
Ever the protective pals, Chase and Nigel exchanged significant stares before Chase spoke up. Chase said in a tone that left little room for debate, "Hey, Zelene, just remember, if any guy tries to mess with you again, they'll have to answer to us first."
Zelene was filled with courage and determination as she grinned appreciatively at her friends. She said, "Thanks, guys," in a firm yet determined voice. "But don't worry, I won't let anyone hurt me again. I'm stronger than that."
