“What?!” I shouted out in shock
“Three weeks after getting the courage to make plans to leave, we got a call to say Paul had a fit out in the street; hit his head and died” Lorna sobbed “We knew that wasn’t true. Especially when Paul wanted to go to arrange the funeral and the facility insisted that Tracy and I stay here. Josh didn’t argue, he couldn’t risk it” Lorna cried, her tears flowing down her face as she used a tissue to wipe them
“Poor Josh” I whispered
“He was devastated. But when he came back two weeks later, it was a different Josh. We drove out here again and Josh told me of his plans. We were going to buy some land and build a big house to show them we were putting down roots. That we were committed to staying. He found out that there were a few other facilities like these and that Paul had found out some information…that some of the packs were infiltrated. That more packs were going to be attacked and shifter's kidnapped. And he wanted to help. Not just you all but Tracy. If we moved, they would have hunted us down and eventually found out that Tracy was a shifter. We wouldn’t have stood a chance against them. So we bought land not far from here and built a big lodge style house” Lorna said with a deep breath “Josh continued to work at the facility, gathering as much information as he could against them while learning enough to help Tracy keep her secret”
“Didn’t they still suspect you?” i asked her
“They did for a while. They even planted bugs in the house but that’s why Josh wanted this place. They couldn’t plant things on the trees or area around here without getting some sort of transmission pole up. We started to build here and took walks every other day deep into the forest area so we could talk. When other people started moving here, people not part of the facility or even pack; we decided it was the perfect hideout. I decided to open a small air B&B style place. We built seven lodges over the years and told people to come visit and look at this small island. They couldn’t do much about it since they wanted us to stay. In the years that happened, Josh built up and took information from them, trying to keep you all safe as well as Tracy while making a plan to get you all out” Lorna said
Standing up, she reached into the bag and pulled out a weird black thing and motioned me over. I sat where she had been before and she pulled my messy hair and put it in a small ponytail. She then put this black thing over it and at first it was fine and then my hair felt very tight. I made a face and she laughed. She reached into the bag and started pulling out little tubes of things. I froze, thinking she was going to hurt me but she just told me to close my eyes and not move. It felt like forever before she moved away and told me to open my eyes.
I almost got a fright. In front of me she held a mirror and I looked like….not me. I moved my hand to my face and touched it, scared to make it a mess. Lorna smiled as she spoke
“ It’s called a wig. Fake hair. I also used a little make-up. Four years ago, a shifter family came to visit our lodge. They discovered Tracy and when Josh and I spoke to them, we knew we finally found a friend who could help us. They were a couple from a very small pack. Only about thirty of them, but they live out of the UK. They couldn’t take on the facility. Since you were captured; they have had inside help from wolves and they built the compound. They now use that smaller three story building for offices but used the land that the pack used to live on and made it into a bigger place where they then captured more people. A lot of you were children when they brought you in” Lorna said as she fixed this wig
I nodded at her statement
“My friend is here with her husband and children and it has taken us this long to come up with a plan. Josh found out that the pack that lived where the compound is, had two children who weren’t killed or kidnapped. Boys. Alpha’s. He discovered that since the attack; the director has had to lay low because questions had been asked about the pack and locations. For many weeks after; so many different people came to visit to find out what happened. Josh said that something called the council was causing the director problems with their probing and so they decided to keep things quiet for a while” Lorna said as she stepped back and looked at me
“I didn’t see Raine or any of the others until almost a year after being there” I said
“They were being kept in the same place but hidden from you” Lorna lifted her eyes at me, sad “I know they killed the other two who came with you”
“That’s why I agreed to take the pills” I said, nodding sadly “I…was scared to die”
“I know sweetheart” Lorna said “Josh told me what the pills did and how they kept you controlled and quiet. It’s because you were also from a beta family and the power you had, came out of your very pores. Do you remember what that is?”
“Yes. my parents were our alpha’s right hand. I’m from a powerful line” I admitted
“Yes. They have been trying to find a way to get that powerful essence. Sue” Lorna sat in front me and held my hand “They managed to make something from your blood. A serum that can control someone if used on the skin”
“No!” I shouted, my hands covering my face as I sobbed
“When Josh knew that they started to get close, that was when he started to build the tunnel. He spent ages on youtube-”
“Youtube?” I asked, cutting in and looking at her
“Erm…a tv that tells people how to do many different things in different ways” Lorna said “He realised that the tunnel couldn’t be built in human size. He planed for six months and worked with my friend Saliha’s husband, that it my friend who is the wolf”
“What did he say?” I asked her
“To build the tunnel so only a wolf could fit through it and couldn’t be followed. So for two years, Josh worked with them and when they visited, they would help build the tunnel in their wolf form so they knew how high to build it. Josh worked out how to lead the tunnel from the compound to this forestry area. Then he pretended he wasn’t well and would take walks in the garden area outside. When the doctor insisted on making the walls around the compound concrete mixed with a substance that affected shifter's, Josh told them to plant a certain type of shrubbery around inside of the compound to keep you all away from breaching the wall. He said he witnessed you not liking certain types of plants” Lorna said as she helped me up
“Tracy, let’s go hun” Lorna shouted to her daughter
Once again we started walking slowly towards the home she had spoken about as I helped her lift her bags.
“When I was kid, i was burned by nettles. I hate them” I said
“I know, Josh said” Lorna chuckled “He convinced them of that by getting you to act scared in front of certain plants and told the rest to do the same. He needed coverage so he could build the tunnel and make the door”
“But the camera’s and…and people” my eyes widened
“There’s more than just Josh who doesn’t agree with what is going on in there, especially those who have joined the company in the last three years or so” Lorna said as she hoisted the backpack onto her shoulder
“Who else is there?” I asked in surprise “No-one else was as kind as him”
“There’s plenty hun, but we all had to be careful not to show too much familiarity to each other. Listen to me, we are not too far from home. Josh found out about those brothers and when we get home, I am going to tell you everything about them. You are going to leave with Saliha and her family when they get on the boat and they are going to take you to the mainland. They have contacted a pack in Glasgow who will help you and help you contact those brothers. It’s their land and pack that was used and killed. You look a lot like her which is why you are looking like this. We still need to be careful when you go out and not get too close to people but; it allows you to be outside a little” Lorna said
“Thank you” I whispered, a sob caught in my throat “For helping me…us”
“And my daughter” Lorna said as she walked towards a clearing “Promise when s**t hits the fan and you come back for your friends; that you will take Tracy with you. That you will protect her”
“I wouldn’t leave you behind” I said, horrified that she thought I would
“They won’t let all of us live and walk free” Lorna hiccuped, her eyes sad and mournful “Josh and I have accepted that most likely neither one of us will survive; but Tracy….she will need someone. These brothers sound power and look like good people and Tracy-” She cut off on a sob as tears fell
“Lorna, I-”
“She needs a pack, someone who will teach her how to be herself...and how to be wolf. We can’t do that” Lorna said, cutting me off “She needs good people to protect her and take her in. I can tell you are good and so could Josh. These brothers…their pack is friendly and kind. There’s no inner fighting or abuse of any kind. Josh found out, it took him years to gather this information. They live in Ireland. Please, please…promise me you will take care of her. That you will take her with you” Lorna begged me
I nodded, a lump in my throat. My head is buzzing with so much information and the reality of my situation. This world was so big and I haven’t been in it for many years. There was so much I didn’t know. My wolf still hadn’t come back and now I might have a pup to take care of too.
Goddess, what was Raine going to say to that?
As we walked further, I saw how the woods and forestry was now behind us and we walked a path made of stones. I nearly panicked when I saw a couple of humans walk towards us; a man and a woman who smiled and waved at us all while calling out pleasantries. I let out a whoosh of air as Lorna told me to stay calm and keep walking. I put my head down, letting the black wig hair cover some of my face. I heard another lady call out as Lorna and I walked further and Tracy distracted her; letting me breathe again. Before I knew it, the scenery changed. Suddenly there were these houses made of wood, something similar like my old pack’s and there were car’s parked and a few people were outside talking. I felt Lorna hold my hand and tell me to keep breathing and that we were nearly there before she let go of my hand and walked ahead.
After a few more steps, she turned into a small area where there was a pathway to a cabin and she knocked on the door. I stood there, trembling; heart in my throat as I prayed this wasn’t a trap as my fear of the unknown grew. Slowly the door opened to reveal a man
with black hair standing there.
“Come in” He said, opening the door wider
Wolf! He was a shifter! Another shifter!
I followed Lorna in as Tracy followed. He turned to Tracy and told her to go upstairs and play. I followed Lorna as she went to a big room with chairs and things inside as the man closed the door. Every step I took felt like a weight; every breath like it was knifing me as
my fear kept climbing
“Oh you poor darling” I heard a female voice say
I barely lifted my head when I felt arms wrap around me and the smell of a shifter female teased my nose. Not just a shifter female.
A shifter mum. That smell of apple and baked pies. The smell of warmth and sunshine. How a mother’s simple scent was of safety.
This wolf shifter smelled like home..
She smelled like how my mum used to smell like
And just like that, my defences went down. Years of pain and fear rolled out of me as tears pricked my eyes before falling down rapidly onto my cheeks. I lets out a sob, my breath choppy as I couldn’t catch any air in my lungs
“I’ve got you sweetheart. I’ve got you” She whispered
And I let go, crying into the comfort of those arms that made me think of home, of my mother.
My body shuddering with pain as my knees collapsed, my body finally breaking with years of abuse taking its toll and still those arms held me; following me as I collapsed in a sea of pain and heartache
