When she got home, Meela went straight to her room and cleaned her wound herself.
She was a trained doctor. But Kaius had never wanted her to work.
So she'd stayed home, but she'd never stopped studying medicine.
She'd just finished bandaging her hand when there was a knock on the door. It was her parents.
"Meela, are you sure about this?" Catherine Goldwin's eyes were red. "Can't you stay?"
Richard Goldwin said nothing, but his face was full of sadness.
Meela wiped the tears from Catherine's face with her uninjured hand. "I need to be with my biological father. I'm his only family."
Catherine and Richard exchanged a sad look. "Does Kaius know? He loves you more than anything. He'll be heartbroken."
"He'll find out," Meela said, avoiding the question. "It's late. You should go to bed."
After they left, Meela started packing her suitcase. She took almost nothing.
Every gift Kaius had ever given her—every hair clip, every piece of jewelry—she left behind. All of it.
The sun came up.
Meela was walking down the stairs when she saw Brianna. "Ms. Goldwin? Kaius told me to come get you for breakfast."
Meela stared at her coldly, ignoring the obvious provocation. But Brianna walked past her and pushed open her bedroom door.
"Oh no, your room is such a mess! Your hand is hurt. Let me help you clean up."
Brianna walked over to the glass display case in the corner. "Wow, all these medals and certificates..."
She smiled sweetly, but her eyes were cold. "They're so dusty. Let me wipe them off for you."
Meela's heart dropped. She watched in horror as Brianna "accidentally" pushed the entire display case over.
It shattered on the floor.
Her father's medals. The ones he'd almost died for.
And Brianna stepped right on them.
"Oops!" Brianna covered her mouth with her hand, fake innocence written all over her face. "I'm so clumsy! I'm sorry, Ms. Goldwin!"
Meela had had enough. She raised her hand to slap her.
"Go ahead. Hit me," Brianna said, leaning her face forward. "I'm your future sister-in-law, remember?"
Suddenly, tears poured down Brianna's face. She fell to her knees. "Ms. Goldwin, I'm sorry! It was all my fault! But please don't be mad at Kaius! He loves you so much!"
"Brianna!" Kaius ran into the room and pulled her to her feet.
He looked at the broken glass all over the floor and frowned at Meela. "It's just a few stupid medals. Did you have to throw a tantrum?
"She came here to apologize for what happened last night, and this is how you treat her? Meela, I'm so disappointed in you."
