Kaius glared at her, his fists clenched so tight his knuckles cracked.
Meela looked at him coldly and threw her phone at his chest. "I didn't push her."
Brianna's eyes darted nervously. "Kaius, you don't think she did this, do you? It was all my fault! I was just scared and—"
The room went silent.
"Mom, can you give us a minute?" Kaius grabbed Meela's wrist and pulled her into the stairwell.
"Look," he said, sighing. "Brianna has been through a lot. Her husband abused her. That's why I hit you earlier. I'm sorry, okay?"
"Are you done?" Meela interrupted him. "Then go. She's waiting for you."
Kaius opened his mouth to say something, but closed it again. "It's your birthday in three days. We'll celebrate together, okay?"
He hurried back to Brianna's room, not waiting for her answer.
Meela wiped the tears from her eyes. She turned to leave and froze when she heard voices from below.
It was Brianna's ex-husband.
"That b***h Brianna is lucky. Kaius Goldwin is such an i***t; he actually believes her. But I made five million dollars from that little stunt with the knife, so who's laughing now?
"You wanna know why she married me? It's hilarious! Kaius pretended to be poor to test her, and she dumped him! Can you believe that?
"This whole falling down the stairs thing? Total bullshit. But hey, I'm gonna milk it for all it's worth."
Meela fumbled with her phone, quickly recorded the whole conversation, and ran.
"s**t! It's the Goldwin girl!" the man yelled. He pulled out his phone and called Brianna. "Meela knows everything."
Brianna's hand tightened around her phone. She looked up at Kaius, who was sitting beside her, and smiled sweetly. "Kaius... will you marry me?"
*****
The next day.
Meela waited all day for Kaius to come home. Late that night, she heard his car pull up. She knocked on his bedroom door. "Kaius, I need to talk to you."
She owed it to the Goldwin family to warn him. They'd raised her for twenty-two years. She couldn't just let him be played for a fool.
"Come in."
Kaius stepped back and let her in. He poured her a glass of warm milk. "You couldn't sleep? Drink this. It'll help."
Meela drank it without thinking. "Kaius, I found out something about Brianna—"
Suddenly, the room started spinning. Her vision blurred.
She realized what had happened. "Kaius! What did you do?!"
His voice sounded far away. "I'm sorry, Meela."
*****
Meela woke up with a gasp. The sheet slipped down her body, and she realized she was naked.
She turned her head slowly. Kaius was lying next to her, also naked.
The milk. The apology. It all made sense now.
Her blood turned to ice.
The door burst open.
Catherine stood in the doorway, her face white with rage. "Meela Goldwin! How could you do this? He's your brother!"
