The Call Of The Moon
Ariane sat on her porch, the warm summer breeze ruffling her hair as she gazed at the horizon. The sun dipped low, casting golden hues across the sky, a perfect backdrop for the thoughts swirling in her mind. The town was buzzing with excitement for the upcoming Harvest Festival, but Ariane felt a different kind of energy in the air—a pull that resonated deep within her.
“Why do you always look so lost in thought?” Lily, her best friend, plopped down beside her, breaking Ariane's reverie. “You’re not still thinking about that boy, are you?”
Ariane rolled her eyes playfully. “Which boy? There are so many in this town.”
Lily smirked. “You know exactly who I mean—Orion, the mysterious one who vanished into thin air after that night by the lake.”
Ariane felt her cheeks flush at the mention of Orion. He was unlike anyone she had ever met—dark-haired, with piercing green eyes that seemed to see right through her. They had shared a moment under the full moon, a connection that left her breathless. But he had disappeared, leaving her with unanswered questions and a longing she couldn’t shake.
“Maybe he’s just a figment of my imagination,” Ariane said, trying to dismiss her feelings. “After all, who would want a girl like me?”
“Stop it! You’re amazing, and you know it,” Lily insisted, nudging her shoulder. “Besides, there’s something about him. You felt it, too. You’re just scared of what it means.”
Ariane sighed, the weight of her emotions heavy on her heart. “I don’t know, Lily. It’s just… complicated.”
As the sun set, a chill crept into the air, and Ariane felt a shiver run down her spine. It was as if the forest called to her, beckoning her to uncover its secrets. “I think I need to go for a walk,” she said suddenly, standing up.
“Now? It’s getting dark!” Lily protested.
“I’ll be fine. I just need to clear my head,” Ariane replied, determination in her voice. She knew she had to face whatever was pulling at her heartstrings.
As she walked toward the edge of the forest, the moon rose high, illuminating the path ahead. The trees whispered secrets, and Ariane felt an inexplicable connection to the night. It was then that she heard it—a low growl echoing through the shadows.
Her heart raced as she turned, and there he was—Orion, stepping into the moonlight. He looked even more striking than she remembered, his presence commanding and magnetic.
“Ariane,” he said, his voice deep and smooth, sending shivers down her spine. “I’ve been searching for you.”
“What are you doing here?” she breathed, her heart pounding in her chest. “You disappeared.”
“I had to,” he replied, his expression serious. “There are things you don’t understand—things that could put you in danger.”
“Danger? What do you mean?” Ariane asked, confusion swirling in her mind.
Before he could answer, a howl echoed through the forest, sending a chill down her spine. Orion’s eyes darkened, and he stepped closer, urgency in his voice. “You need to trust me. We have to leave now.”
“Leave? Why?” Ariane asked, fear creeping into her voice.
“There are others who want to claim you, and they won’t stop until they have what they want,” he said, his gaze intense.
“Claim me?” Ariane echoed, bewildered. “What are you talking about?”
Orion took a deep breath, his expression softening. “You’re my mate, Ariane. But it’s more complicated than that. There’s another—someone who will stop at nothing to take you from me.”
Ariane’s heart raced, a mix of excitement and confusion swirling within her. “Mate? I don’t even know what that means!”
“It means we’re destined to be together,” he explained, his voice filled with urgency. “But it also means that there are others like me—werewolves—who will fight for their mates. And one of them is coming for you.”
Before Ariane could process his words, the forest erupted with movement. Shadows darted between the trees, and the air thickened with tension. Orion’s expression hardened. “We need to go. Now.”
As they ran deeper into the forest, Ariane felt the adrenaline coursing through her veins. She had never been so alive, so aware of the danger surrounding her. But alongside the fear, there was an undeniable thrill—the realization that she was part of something much larger than herself.
They reached a clearing, and Ariane stopped, breathless. “What now?”
Orion turned to her, his eyes fierce. “We need to find the others—my pack. They’ll protect you.”
Your pack?” Ariane repeated, her mind racing. “What if I don’t want to be part of this world?”
“You don’t have a choice,” he said, his voice softening. “But I promise, I’ll protect you. You’re not alone in this.”
Just then, a figure emerged from the shadows—a tall, muscular man with dark hair and piercing eyes. “Orion,” he said, his voice low and dangerous. “You’ve returned.”
“Damon,” Orion replied, his tone tense. “What are you doing here?”
“I came to claim what’s mine,” Damon said, his gaze shifting to Ariane. “You think you can protect her? You’re weak, Orion. She belongs with me.”
Ariane felt a surge of fear. “What do you mean I belong with you?”
Damon stepped closer, his presence intimidating. “You’re destined to be my mate, Ariane. Orion can’t protect you from what you are.”
“No!” Orion shouted, stepping in front of her protectively. “She’s mine!”
Ariane’s heart raced as the tension between the two men escalated. She felt torn, caught between two powerful forces. “Wait! What does this mean? I don’t even understand what’s happening!”
Orion turned to her, his expression fierce yet tender. “You have to choose, Ariane. Choose who you want to be with.”
The weight of the decision pressed down on her. She felt the connection with Orion—his warmth, his strength—but Damon’s presence was equally compelling, a magnetic force that pulled at her heart.
“Choose wisely,” Damon warned, his gaze unwavering. “The fate of your future depends on it.”
Ariane’s mind raced as she processed the gravity of the situation. She had never imagined finding herself in such a predicament, torn between two mates, each representing a different path in her life.
“I… I need time,” she stammered, her heart pounding.
“No,” Orion said, his voice urgent. “You don’t have time. The darkness is coming, and you need to decide now.”
Ariane took a step back, her heart racing. “But how can I choose? I barely know either of you!”
“Trust your instincts,” Orion urged, his eyes locked onto hers. “Listen to your heart.”
As the tension in the air thickened, Ariane felt the weight of their gazes upon her. She closed her eyes, taking a deep breath as she searched for clarity amidst the chaos.
In that moment, she felt a surge of warmth radiating from Orion, a sense of safety and belonging that enveloped her like a comforting embrace. But alongside it, there was a thrill of excitement with Damon—a wildness that ignited a fire within her.
“Choose, Ariane,” Damon said, his voice low and commanding.
With her heart pounding, Ariane opened her eyes, looking between the two men. She knew that whatever choice she made would alter the course of her life forever.
“I choose…” she began, the weight of her decision hanging in the air, her heart racing as the shadows of the forest closed in around them.
And in that pivotal moment, the world around her seemed to hold its breath, waiting for her to reveal the fate that awaited them all.
