Zach's POV
"When are you leaving?" Charles asked the minute he got in my office.
"I’ll leave tonight after I put Shane to bed." I replied.
He sat on the chair across my desk and I continued doing what I was doing before he came. He remained silent and I appreciated the silence and did my work. Tonight I was leaving to my grandfather's house. It was in a secluded area, in the middle of a forest. It was my thing to go there this time of month.
I looked at my phone when the alarm rang. It was time to go and pick up Shane from school. I quickly put away my work and got up from my sit.
"Let's go." I said to Charles and he stood up and followed me out of the office. Janelle was away for a business meeting, so it was just us two.
We got in my car and I dismissed the driver. I was going to drive myself today. I drove away from the company and was on my way to the Blue Bird. My guards followed me behind in another car.
"How long will you take this year?"
I looked at Charles and then back to the road. The truth was that I wasn’t sure of how long I’d take this year. It was getting harder and harder each passing year. The only way I managed to pull myself together was because of Shane.
"Perhaps two weeks maybe." I said.
"That's too long, Zach."
I didn't say anything else and focused on my driving. We reached the school and I looked to my right as I pulled in the parking space. I saw my morning encounter in a car that was pulling away from the area. I wondered where he was going. Deep down I felt a twinge of disappointment as I watched the car disappearing out of my view.
"What are you looking at?"
"Nothing," I said to Charles and we both walked inside the school.
"I just have to see my uncle for a bit. Perhaps you can find me there after you collect Shane." Charles suggested and I nodded. He left and I went to where I remembered was Shane's classroom from this morning.
"Hello ma'am. I'm here to collect Shane." I said to the pregnant lady I found on the door. She looked in a book and wrote something.
"It says here that you are his dad?" She asked and I nodded. "ID, please."
I took out my ID and showed it to her. She gave me the book and I signed my name. She then went inside the classroom and came back out with Shane following behind her.
"I'm Mrs. Conrad, Shane's teacher." The woman introduced herself.
"Thank you, Mrs. Conrad. I'll take my leave now." I said and left after she nodded.
I carried Shane out to the car. I got him in and took my phone to call Charles. He wasn't answering and I kept calling. I looked at Shane and he was playing games on his phone. After a third time of not answering my calls, I called Cole, one of my guards, to look after Shane.
I left the car and got back inside the school. I made a bee line to his uncle's office. I knocked on the door and got inside. The secretary I found that morning wasn't there so I proceeded to Liam's office. As I approached the door, I could hear loud yelling voices and it got me wondering what was up.
I knocked on the door a few times but then I just opened it. I found Charles yelling and it seemed his uncle was having a hard time calming him. He looked angry and sad at the same time. I've been with him long enough to read his emotions almost like a book.
I took long strides to him and turned him around to face me. He stopped yelling and I pulled him in a hug. He held my torso tight and I let him. He had to calm down and get his s**t together. The room got silent with just Charles heavily breathing as he calmed down.
"I'm sorry, Charles." His uncle said in a small broken voice and I leaned down a bit to Charles's ears.
"I'll be outside. Don't take long." I whispered and then walked out of the room to give them privacy. I headed back outside to wait for Charles in the car.
From what I heard before opening the door, I knew just what was going on. He was angry because his uncle's husband was caught cheating. He was sad because he was aware of that but couldn't tell his uncle about it. He had tried so many times to tell his uncle but he didn't want to be responsible for his uncle's broken heart. So the anger was also driven by guilt.
Thirty minutes later, he came out and we left the school. I drove to my house silently with just game noise from Shane's phone.
The moment we arrived home, Charles went to his room. Janelle and he both had rooms in my house since they spent countless nights here. I finished the day playing with Shane until we were called for dinner.
After dinner, I went to put Shane to bed. I got the new book I bought him and started reading a chapter he told me to read. I read the whole chapter and kissed his forehead.
"Good night Shane." I whispered.
He then got a paper from under his pillow and gave it to me. It was folded and I looked at him in question.
'I drew that today at school. The teacher said to draw our family.' He signed and I nodded with a promise to take a look at it later. I turned off his lights and exited the room.
I went in Charles's room to say good bye since I was about to leave. I found him asleep and I chuckled at the position he was in. I untangled him from the sheets and covered him nicely. I got a pen from his desk and a piece of paper to write on it. There wasn't much to say so I wrote the general message.
I will be back in a week. Take good care of Shane and yourself. Eat something when you wake up.
I folded the paper but then I unfolded it again. I read the message again and again to see what else I should add.
I will try to make it back in days.
I wrote that and folded the paper. I left it on his desk and walked out. It wasn't necessary to pack anything so I just grabbed my car keys and left the house. No guard was supposed to follow me today. It was just my me time.
I stopped by a*****e and got some groceries and food I would need. I got a lot since I wasn't sure how hungry I would get. I left the store and was on my way to my grandfather's house. It was very late in the night and the road was empty. I only passed two cars yet in a long distance.
That's why I was surprised to see a person walking along the road. I dimmed my car lights and drove the car slowly when I approached the person. I wanted to see if they were a threat or just someone honestly in need of a ride.
After seeing he wasn't a threat and I would handle him if he somehow was one, I stopped my car. That's when he realized there was a car behind him. I couldn't make up a face with the dim light. The person hurried to my window and knocked lightly on it. I pressed the button and it slowly slid down.
"Good evening sir. I'm in need of-" the person started to say but stopped when our eyes met.
"You got to be kidding me." He whispered and I smirked.
"You were saying?" I asked smugly.
"No need. You can go and I will get a ride from the next car that passes." He said and then started walking away.
I sighed and started my car. I drove slowly as I followed him. Why wouldn't he just ask what he was asking for? Why wait for the next car when I was there?
"Hey!" I called to him and he just kept on walking without looking my way. For a minute I forgot this boy was stubborn.
"There are no cars that will pass this road this late at night. You are just lucky I did. So why don't you get in the car and I will give you the ride you need!" I shouted at him and he flicked me off.
I scoffed at his childish behavior. I remained quiet and followed him slowly. I couldn't find it in me to just pass him by and go on my way. I wouldn't live with myself if I abandoned him here. I saw him shivering and I felt bad.
"Hey!" I called out again to try my luck. He stopped and faced the car, so I stopped it too.
"What do you want?" He asked.
"I want to help you. Perhaps you can be cooperative."
"I've met you twice and you were rude both times. I don't think you are the best option for me." He said sharply.
"And this is our third time and all I did was offer help. I may not be the best option but I'm your only option right now." I said and he sighed.
"Do you have a spare blanket in your car?" He asked and I smiled a bit.
"No. But I have a heater and I can turn it on for you." I said and opened the passenger door.
He got in and I turned the heater on. I got back on the road and went my way. I wondered where he was going though. There wasn't any much place to go to in the direction he was going. It was just the forest. Town was on the other way not this way. I kept my mouth shut though, I didn't want him to shout at me or something if I voiced my question.
I focused on the road and I realized late that I was actually supposed to ask where he was going. I turned to him to ask and only found him asleep. He looked so peaceful and I didn't want to wake him. So I left him to sleep and drove to my destination. I would just drive him tomorrow to where he was going.
I reached my grandfather's house at something past 2 in the morning. I got out and went inside the house first. I then went around to the garage and worked on the generator. Once I got it running, the lights went on inside the house.
I first got in the groceries and packed them away. Then I went to the car and carried the sleeping omega inside the house. I went upstairs to a guestroom and laid him on the bed. He looked very uncomfortable in his clothes so I removed the T-shirt.
I removed his shoes and socks but gasped at the swelling of his feet. He winced in his sleep when I moved my hand on the swellings. I knew it would go away since he is a werewolf but I felt bad to leave him like that.
So I went down and got a few cold drinks and warm water in a basin. I cleaned his feet with the warm water and a cloth then wrapped the cold drinks I brought with me in a cloth and pressed it on his feet. There was no ice blocks so the cold drinks were all I was left with to use.
It didn't take long as his feet started healing perfectly. I removed the shorts he had on and covered him nicely with some sheet then switched off the light. I carried my things and left the room.
After depositing the things in the kitchen, I went up to my room. It was exactly how I left it last time. I was very tired, so I got in bed to rest. But my mind drifted to the omega sleeping in my guestroom.
Where was he coming from late this night? What happened for him to be stranded at such a late hour?
I bet he didn't know of the people k********g omegas because if he did, he wouldn't have been walking that late. I was glad I got to him other than someone else.
He was safe with me.
I smiled at the thought and slept peacefully.
