Chapter 1 The Ruined Vinyl Record
I pushed open the carved wooden door.
Smoke curled through the private room. Lucian Lawson lounged against a leather sofa with a cigarette between his fingers. Curled up in his arms was the newly debuted singer, Renee Lyrrn.
The moment he saw me, Lucian paused slightly. Still, he made no move to push Renee away.
"What are you here to pull this time?"
I said nothing. My gaze settled on Renee instead.
Those innocent doe eyes blinked at me. Then she suddenly pointed at the record in my hand in a sugary voice.
"Lucian, I'm filming a retro-style MV next month. I happen to need a vinyl record as a prop. You promised me that anything I like can be mine. Right?"
That vinyl record was an out-of-print collector's item.
I had searched through secondhand markets all across Euravia for it. I had called in countless favors and even stood in the pouring rain for four hours waiting for the seller just to get my hands on it. It was something Lucian had been wanting for three years.
At last, Lucian lifted his eyes and glanced at the record. "Give it to her."
I looked at him quietly. "Are you sure?"
"What kind of question is that? Hurry up." Lucian frowned, impatience already creeping into his voice.
I walked over and handed the vinyl record to Renee.
Renee reached out with her exquisitely manicured hand. Her fingers slipped. The sharp crystal nail on her fingertip dragged viciously across the surface of the rare record, leaving behind a deep scratch.
"Oh no. Sorry, Elena. I'm so clumsy."
Renee covered her mouth. Her eyes instantly turned red, looking every bit like the victim.
I looked at Lucian. He did not even frown. He only stared at me coldly.
"It's just a stupid record. Buy another one."
If this had happened before, I would have argued with him with tears in my eyes. But today, I simply took the ruined record from Renee's hands and turned toward the door.
"Please throw it out somewhere far away. It's trash now."
I tossed the vinyl record into the garbage bin beside the server's cart. Then I walked out of the club without looking back.
The moment the private room door closed, the look in Lucian's eyes darkened instantly. He shoved Renee away and crushed the cigarette hard into the ashtray.
"Lucian." Renee pouted softly.
"Shut up." His expression darkened as he rose to his feet and strode toward the restroom.
At the corner of the hallway, he stopped his assistant and lowered his voice. "Go dig that record out of the trash. If even one fragment is missing, do not bother coming back to work tomorrow."
The assistant rushed off in panic to search through the garbage bin.
Lucian leaned against the wall and pulled out his phone. His eyes locked onto the blurred electronic wedding invitation posted on i********:.
"Investigate it." He dialed another number. His fingers tightened around the phone until his knuckles turned white. "I want to know whose name was censored out on that invitation."
Ten minutes later, the other end called back.
"Mr. Lawson, we could not find anything. The groom's information was wiped clean directly by the top families from the capital circle."
