Don’t Drink the Water
Pain slices through my shoulders. My hands. They’re behind my back. Cold metal circles my wrists. Handcuffs. “…No.” My heart starts hammering. I yank. Nothing. Again. The steel doesn’t move. My skin does. A sharp burn tears across my wrists. Warm liquid trickles over my hands. Blood. Okay. Superficial abrasions. Probably just skin. Painful. Not life-threatening. Unless I keep acting like an i***t. I stop pulling. Medical school finally pays for something besides crippling student loans. I force myself to breathe. Slow in. Slow out. Assess. Don’t panic. Panic wastes oxygen. Panic gets people killed. I scan the room. Concrete floor. Concrete walls. No windows. One heavy metal door. No furniture. No way out. Then I see it. Something is slumped in the corner. For one blissfully ignorant second, I convince myself it’s a pile of blankets. Then it moves. Not blankets. A person. Fantastic. Nothing says “good morning” like waking up handcuffed in a basement with an unidentified roommate. My pulse pounds against my ribs hard enough to leave bruises. Footsteps. Slow. Steady. Each one echoes through the room. The metal door creaks open. A man steps inside. Average height. Dark jeans. Gray hoodie. Plain enough to disappear into any crowd. Until I notice the scar. It begins just beneath his left ear and disappears beneath the collar of his sweatshirt, pale and jagged, as though someone once tried to unzip his neck. My brain catalogs it automatically. Distinctive identifying feature. Approximately six inches. Healed. Old. Good. Focus on details. Details matter. He walks toward me carrying a bottle of water. My throat immediately tightens. When was the last time I drank anything? He kneels and places the bottle on the floor just out of reach. “What am I doing here?” Nothing. “Where am I?” Silence. “Who are you?” His face doesn’t change. Not angry. Not amused. Nothing. Just empty. He stands and walks back toward the door. “Seriously?” My voice cracks. “You’re kidnapping people now? You couldn’t at least introduce yourself?” The lock clicks. He’s gone. I stare at the bottle. “My kidnapper is mysterious and hydrated.” The joke falls flat. Even to me. Silence settles over the room again. Think. Come on, Willa. Think. Pieces begin drifting back. Small ones first. Richmond University Medical Center. Staten Island. Surgical medical student. Lower Manhattan. The ferry every morning. Usually my favorite part of the day. Today… Not so much. A patient. Female. Twenty-one years old. Polytrauma following a motor vehicle collision. Massive internal bleeding. We did everything we could. Time of death… I squeeze my eyes shut. Stop. I don’t want to remember that part. But my brain doesn’t care what I want. She should have had decades left. Instead, a drunk driver stole them in seconds. He came in with cuts, bruises, and a concussion. She came in with no future. People always say life isn’t fair. As if putting a neat little bow on injustice somehow makes it easier to swallow. I couldn’t breathe inside the hospital anymore. Every hallway felt smaller. Every monitor sounded louder. So I slipped out the back entrance. The loading dock was quiet. Finally. One man stood near the wall smoking. I didn’t recognize him. Not unusual. Hospitals are cities disguised as buildings. Thousands of faces. Hundreds of employees. He looked over. “Rough day?” I laughed once. Humorless. “Something like that.” He nodded like he understood. Didn’t ask questions. I appreciated that. I stood there for another minute, taking slow breaths, trying to convince myself tomorrow wouldn’t feel this heavy. When I turned to go back inside… Something slammed over my mouth and nose. A cloth. The smell hit instantly. Sweet. Chemical. Wrong. No. I tried to scream. Instead, I inhaled. My legs disappeared beneath me. My vision folded inward. The world unraveled into black. And then… This room. The handcuffs. The blood on my wrists. The stranger in the corner. My throat burns. The water bottle sits only a few feet away. I twist onto my side, gritting my teeth as the handcuffs bite into my raw wrists. Slowly, I inch backward, trying to maneuver my bound hands toward the bottle. Just a little farther… The metal scrapes against the concrete. Pain shoots through my shoulders. My fingertips stretch. Almost… Just as my fingers brush the cool plastic— A voice slices through the silence. “Don’t.” I freeze. Every muscle locks. The figure in the corner shifts. Not much. Just enough. He slowly lifts his head. Sunken eyes meet mine. An overgrown beard hides most of his face, dark and unkempt, making it impossible to tell how old he is. His hair hangs in tangled strands over his forehead. His lips are cracked. His skin is pale beneath the grime, and exhaustion settles in the shadows under his eyes. He looks like someone who’s been surviving instead of living. He swallows painfully before speaking again. “Don’t drink the water.”
