It's only now that I realize the new management is Mecury. Did he steal this one too? What is he up to?
“You seem surprised?” He notes carefully studying my reaction. He is sitting on top of the desk, leaning back just enough to expose his frame. The angle exposing his polished chest as his shirt is only half buttoned up.
“Of course, I'm surprised. What are you doing here?” I question with my eyebrow raised.
“I thought your friend told about the new management,” he reminds me. Also, remembering I might have made a fool of myself in front of the man expected to hire me.
“ She didn't tell me it was you. Because why would I have wasted my time?" I ask. Desperately needing this job, but I'm not giving him the satisfaction of it.
“ Because you need the job and the money," he tells me.
“ Sure I do. What I don't need is you breathing down my neck. I'm going home.” I huff, turning on my heels, ready to leave.
“ But we haven't even started yet with the interview?"
“ I wasn't told anything about an interview. I was only told you wanted to see me. You've seen me,” I reply, still facing the exit as I am ready to move out any time. Which startles me like a bolt from the blue is a cold hand around my wrist. “ What do you think you're doing? " I ask, surprisingly noticing Mecury right besides me.
“ Don't act like you don't need me, ” he coaxed his voice, tightening the grip as I try to pull away.
“ I'm not acting like anything. I don't need you," I hiss, forcefully trying to break free from his strong grip. The attempt is futile is it seems I stuck in a metal cage.
“ Okay fine. But you do need the money, or how else will take care of your parents? Think of your family," he reminds. At this point, I'm more than ready to go back to the hotel if I have to. It's not like I quit or anything. I can always come with a tangible excuse for my absence.
“ It's not like you're willing to give me a job, and it's not like I'm going to beg you or anything” I say.
“ That's disappointing. I was really hoping to work with you. In fact I hoped you could start tomorrow morning. But since you won't beg me…”
“ What!? No, I'm not doing that. You can keep your job,” I tell him, with attempt to step away but regrettably prevented by his grip. This man must be testing my patience seriously.
“ Oh c'mon. What's with the pride? If it were someone else they would have done everything by this time, to impress me.” Partly biting his lower lip, he eats up my frame head to toe. Immediately I feel a dread of discomfort. Chills shivering up and down my spine. If only I can disappear this instance. He's so disgusting, a sick. And to even think he takes advantage of other people's desperation.
“I'm here tolerating your nonsense. Isn't that impressive?” I sneer, not daring to hide my disgust towards him.
He lets out a chuckle. Reaching to his pocket for his phone.
Looking weird to me, I'm skeptical of what he's up to.
“What are you doing?” I narrow my eyes in the hand that held the phone.
“Texting Ingrid,” he replies, indeed typing on his phone.
Even more skeptical," You text your employees?” I question. Lifting his eyes, a smile curls on his face.
“Isn't that easier?”
“More like unprofessional,” I lecture him, which he did not seem to take it to mind.
“She should be here any moment,” he says, putting away his phone. “Meanwhile, we can just wait.” Finally, he lets go of my hand, giving it relief. He walks back to his table, as I wait for something I don't even know. Hopefully, I didn't get Ingrid in trouble. I can never know what's buzzing in his mind.
Just then the elevator dings, Ingrid emerges from inside.
“Good you're here. I want you to show Mrs. Walton around. She should be starting tomorrow morning,” he says, at which Ingrid nods with understanding. Yet, I'm completely in the dark.
“What?” I open my mouth, shocked.
“Yes. You're hired, Mrs. Walton,” he calmly responds.
“Is this some kind of joke? "
“No, it's not a joke. I'm serious. Unless of course you don't want the job," he folds his arms slightly, leaning on the table.
“ I do, but-”
“ That's what I thought-”
“ If you're hoping to get something in return… "
“ What could I possibly want from you in return? " Suddenly, he climbs to sit on the table.
I raise my eyebrow at him. The smile on his face indicating he understood.
“Consider this as my token of apology for last. Maybe I got a little personal yesterday,” he says.
“ Maybe? " I ask.
“ Alright I was being personal, but I didn't mean to make you cry. So take the job as my form of apology. "
“ Wow well… That's - u hmm-” I could barely find any words to speak. I didn't actually expect him to be human. I find it so hard to believe. Like he's going to burst out and confess this is all a big prank.
“This is the contract.” He hands me a bundle of papers which he picked from his desk.
“ The what?” I look at the documents confused.
“ You can check it. Even get a lawyer to check it for you. You can sign whenever you feel ready, "he says. Confused, I partly look at him, the documents and Ingrid who's watching silently.
“ Get a lawyer? " I question him.
“I know you don't trust me,” he says.
“ Silly me. How can I not trust you when you've given me do many reasons to trust you?” I say sarcastically. He narrows his eyes at me, displeased by my sarcasm. “ Okay, I'm sorry. And thank you I guess," I mumble, skimming through the papers.
“Well, I'll let Ingrid do her job,” he points out to her. I sigh as I press the button which opens the elevator. Both Ingrid and I step inside. Mecury's smile fades with the closing door. Slightly, giving him a small grin even though I'm still not certain about everything.
“So you got the job?” Finally, Ingrid gets an opportunity to speak as the elevator door closes completely.
“ Maybe,” I respond.
“What do you mean maybe? He just admitted that he's hiring you,” she recalls.
“ I don't trust Mecury. This could be all just a joke to him," I say, shoving the papers in my purse.
“ Really? He even apologized to you.”
“ He does owe me an apology. “ Finally, the door opens again and we step out.
“ He doesn't seem like the one who'd apologize. I think he's not joking,” she says. Clearly she doesn't know Mecury. I may have known him for a few hours. But I feel I know enough already to know what kind of person he is.
“Well, I guess all it is, it's to wait and see,”
