CHAPTER 1 – She Returns
"I’m back, Gavin," the woman said, tugging at Gavin’s tie, pulling them within inches of each other.
"I’m back for you."
Ariel’s steps froze the moment she saw a woman standing that close to Gavin. In the next second, her eyes caught a sight that pierced straight through her heart.
“Iora?” Ariel whispered, barely believing it.
She had come to surprise her boyfriend. Gavin had just passed the casting for the film God of War and landed the lead role. As a loyal girlfriend of five years, of course she wanted to be the first to congratulate him.
Ariel came holding a small box containing a necklace with the initials ‘G & A’.
She stood frozen. Her hand still clutched the gift box.
Gavin, also frozen in place, stared at the woman in front of him. Five years ago, Iora Catherine was his first love—the woman he had loved the most. But she had left him for a dream.
"Iora, am I dreaming?" Gavin muttered, barely audible.
Iora gently touched Gavin’s face. “I know you must be angry with me, but I’m certain your feelings are still for me,” she said, pressing a finger against Gavin’s chest.
"Gavin, I—"
"Ariel was just a replacement, wasn’t she? Because in your heart, there’s only me," Iora cut him off quickly, her tone dripping with disdain.
"I’m back now. I left five years ago to chase my dream. So, we can start over again."
Gavin said nothing. His eyes stayed on Iora. One hand slowly rose to her cheek, as if to confirm that the woman standing before him was truly real.
And when Iora’s lips touched his, Gavin didn’t move. He didn’t even resist.
Just before Gavin could return the kiss, Ariel took a sharp breath and turned away. Her eyes were already starting to well up.
She left without a single word. The wound she had just received pierced the deepest part of her soul.
Ariel wandered aimlessly down a nearly empty city sidewalk, her steps dragging, her breath tight in her chest, her gaze hollow. Her tears finally fell, trailing down her cheeks, chilled by the night breeze. Her hand still clutched the gift box she had prepared days in advance. Her heart felt void, like it had lost its footing.
In her mind, memories of Gavin played like an old movie—their laughter riding around the city on his motorbike, late nights studying together while eating instant noodles, Gavin’s embrace when she cried after failing a job interview. Five years wasn’t a short time, was it?
She still remembered Gavin’s promise to make her his wife once he succeeded in his film projects.
But the reality? Gavin hadn’t even flinched when another woman kissed him. Iora had returned, and Gavin welcomed her warmly.
Ariel bit her lower lip to hold back a sob. Her chest felt as though it was being crushed. Five years of loyalty and love shattered in mere seconds.
“I was just a replacement,” she whispered, bitter and broken. “Ariel, she’s back. Gavin’s first love is back!”
Ariel stopped at a deserted bus stop. The streetlight cast a pale glow on her tear-streaked face. She sat down, hugging herself, trying to steady her breath. But her mind couldn’t stop replaying what had just happened—how Gavin, her boyfriend, her supposed fiancé, had allowed another woman to kiss him without any resistance.
With trembling hands, Ariel took out her phone from her bag. She stared at the screen for a moment, then tapped Gavin’s name in her contact list. The call connected.
Tuuut... tuuut... click.
“Hello?” A woman’s voice. Not Gavin’s.
Ariel paused. She recognized the voice instantly.
"Who is this?" she asked, her voice barely audible.
"Oh... you must be Ariel?" Iora replied, her tone far too casual.
Ariel bit her lip. "Where’s Gavin? I want to talk to him."
“Hmm... Gavin’s in the bathroom,” Iora answered quickly. “He’s showering. He got a bit sweaty just now—he played a little too enthusiastically.”
Ariel gripped the hem of her skirt. The veins in her hands tightened. She shut her eyes, holding back the rising tide of rage and disgust in her chest.
“Tell him—” Ariel began, but Iora cut her off.
“I think you should reconsider your relationship with Gavin, Ariel,” Iora said, her voice calm but sharp as a blade.
“What do you mean?”
“Gavin loves me, not you. You were just filling the void in his heart while I was gone. You know that, don’t you? From the beginning, you were just a replacement. And you know very well who I am in his life.”
Ariel didn’t reply. Her chest tightened. She could hear her own heartbeat pounding.
Iora gave a soft laugh. “I don’t think you’re stupid, Ariel. So it’s better if you walk away. Gavin never truly loved you.”
Without a word, Ariel ended the call. Her hands trembled—not from sadness, but from the slow-burning fury rising inside her. She stared at her phone screen, her breaths coming heavy. Her tears returned, falling harder. But she wiped them away swiftly.
A few seconds later, Iora looked at Gavin’s phone and slyly deleted the call history. A satisfied smile crept across her face.
“Ariel, only I deserve to be Mrs. Gavin. You’re not worthy! You’re just a poor girl. Not worthy to stand beside a top actor like Gavin Gionino Chandra.”
Meanwhile, Ariel slowly stood from the bus stop. Her eyes no longer wet. A faint smirk formed on her lips, trembling with emotion.
“So it’s true. I was just a replacement all this time? Tch!” she muttered. “Fine, Gavin. If you only ever saw me as a stand-in, and your first love has returned... then I’ll be the one to end this.”
