Haunting Dreams
DAD........ MOM....... NO...... THIS CAN'T BE HAPPENING...... DADDDDDD..... MOMMYYYY......... NOOOOOOOOOOOO. AHHHHHHHHH.......
Mara woke up with a startled cry. The time on the alarm clock was indicating her usual wake-up time, exact 3 am. This had now become a habit to her. The dream never ceased. It was as if someone had put the dream on repeat, just like that one song that gets stuck in your brain and keeps on playing itself again and again and again. Even when it's not playing in reality, its existence becomes your reality.
Knowing that sleep had forsaken her, Mara just got up from her bed and headed to her safe haven. The only place of solace that remained for her...... The training room.
The training room was a wide space encompassing two floors. The walls were made of impenetrable steel walls with bulletproof shielded walls to drop over the steel ones in times of attack. The upper floor was a web of networks, computers, laptops- a sophisticated cyber cell to simply put it. The cyber floor was buzzing with continuous beepings indicating her various targets , their activities, their live locations and several other details. The bottom floor had the look of a physical training floor with various swords, guns, blades, and ammunitions on one side while the other had punching and wrestling arena.
On the wall there was a huge potrait which said "Your biggest enemy is never a stranger....It's always the closest ones." Mara pressed on the word 'closest' and the potrait opened up to reveal a secret door that lead to another room. This room was completely different than the two floors. It was the only aesthetic room in the entire structure. This secret room was the only colour Mara had in her life now.
The room had a cozy, warm ambience with the floor and walls made of dark bamboo and the ceiling painted light blue that reminded one of good ol' sea. There was a floor mattress with lots of cushions and rugs with a huge LED TV . The room was decorated with lots of plants , fairy lights, wall hangings, multiple pictures and a rug in the middle to finish it off. Mara went to the tv and put on meditation music and set the timer for exactly 15 mins. This was the only time of the day that she could be herself and let everything go. She stayed there for another half an hour before heading back to her training room. It wasn't long before her cell phone rang and 'DK' flashed on her cell.
"Hey M, still having trouble sleeping? Was it 3 am again?" Mara absolutely hated it when people got too personal and started asking questions out of their line of business but DK was the only exception to it.
Probably because he was the sole reason she was where she was today and she owed him for that. He was the only person she trusted who could go as far as asking any personal thing and get away unharmed with it. She knew he wanted her to open up but this is who she was and he needed to accept that.
"You know me K...........get to the business. Who is the next target that needs their throats to be slit?" DK sighed loudly.
He always knew that Mara would never answer any question that involved her but that never stopped him from trying to get her to open up. After all, he had opened the gateways of this life to her. He felt responsible for her. He saw her as a daughter and he knew the only thing stopping her from kicking his ass all these times was because even though Mara would never admit it she saw him as a father figure.
"Ok M...You need to report at the headquarters within an hour and- Ya,U shou---No just get to the headquarters."
Mara sensed his hesitation way before he spoke that sentence. "The truth K....You know I hate lies." DK knew but he was reluctant to say . He knew this was something he wanted to tell her in person. "Get here and will talk."
"K blurt it........." Mara hated when he did this.
"Agent M. Hope I have made myself clear . Headquarters in an hour."
"Don't do--" The line disconnected. Mara was seething now . She hated when he pulled this boss card.
"Fine if he wants it this way...let's kick it."
