Esmeralda
When the couple left, and I turned around, I swear I almost died right on the spot from the death glare Lucan was giving me.
If he hadn’t known what I was before, he sure as hell must have figured it out or come damn close to it.
I hadn’t thought about his necromancy ability picking up on my power. He didn’t say anything and just walked off.
I needed to keep an eye on him. When we closed up, I said goodbye to Dana and pretended to head home. I watched them drive off together and decided to follow.
If he was going to be a danger to me, I needed to know and be prepared, even though I was pretty sure I wouldn’t be able to put up much of a fight.
I waited outside while they entered a bar, and about half an hour later I saw Lucan being led outside by a vampire.
I knew it was a vampire because aside from her unnatural beauty, we had this cold energy about us that seemed to connect us, if she was to notice me, she would sense I was vampire too.
I tried to push aside the ridiculous jealousy I felt as I watched them making out, and I was debating whether to just go home when my blood ran cold, ice, ice-cold.
I hadn’t even noticed the stake in Lucan’s hand until it was already plunged into the vampire’s chest, striking her through the heart in one swift move, that took a surprisingly incredible amount of strength to do in one strike.
I backed away slowly and waited in the shadows as Dana came out and helped him carry the body back to the car. How could they be so callous?
They took a long time before they started the car up, and one quick glance had let me know they were having a very intimate moment. I wish I hadn’t looked.
I suppose they were a couple after all, just my luck, not that he would ever be interested in me anyway.
They finally drove off, and I used what little power I had to follow them, jumping into a taxi faster than the lady with her frail-looking mother could. I felt bad, but I needed to know what was going on.
I made the taxi stop far enough back that they wouldn’t notice us, and paid the driver before climbing out. I crossed the cemetery and stayed hidden among the shadows.
I watched as Lucan did something that had his tattoos glowing an ice blue color and had ice blue veins appearing on his forearms, and running down towards his hands that were held out above the body.
I s.lapped my hand across my mouth just in time to stifle my scream. I watched the body practically rot and melt into mush before my very eyes until there was nothing left except a skeleton.
He crushed the remains with his boot, and I watched as the earth swallowed up any remaining pieces before growing silent again.
Dana walked back to the car, while Lucan stayed behind for a moment. I watched as he did a small prayer and kissed the cross necklace around his neck when he was done. “Let your soul be at peace now, my lady,” he whispered and walked off to join Dana.
So he wasn’t so cold-hearted after all, and there was that speech of his again, like he was from another time.
I knew he detested vampires, it was obvious, so perhaps the prayer and respect was for the human she once was, that made sense and was incredibly sweet of him.
When I was back home in my bed, dread and terror filled me again, the image of how he had destroyed that vampire was burned upon my brain and I had no doubt now that he was the executioner the queen had warned us about, question was, did I tell the queen I had found him?
Seeing the respect he had shown for the vampire’s human soul tonight, I knew he wasn’t evil, but he was still the most dangerous enemy to us vampires that I had ever heard of.
Against everything in my nature and against all my loyalties, I chose not to tell the queen, and knew if she or the clan found out I had kept this from them, I would be t.ortured before finally being destroyed.
It was the weekend, so while I was sitting at the table reading a book, I was surprised to see Dana’s number come up on my phone.
“Hello?” I asked shyly.
“Hey, Es! I was calling to see if you still wanted to come join us and learn some self defense?”
I must be losing my mind because as much as Lucans power terrified me I couldn’t wait to be near him again.
“Ok, yes,” I answered.
I found some old jogging bottoms in my bottom drawer and pulled on a gray tank top.
I was pulling on my trainers when Dana text me to let me know she was outside to pick me up.
When we got there Lucan barely acknowledged me, he muttered an, “alright,” as way of greeting, so low if I hadn’t had my vampire hearing I wouldn’t have picked it up.
“Hey,” I smiled, sounding so shy and ridiculous and making it more obvious by looking bashfully to the floor that I didn’t think I could look any more pathetic, but I was wrong.
I was looking down at the floor, but still managed to trip over a small lip. I did that stupid thing where you’re doing that awkward run thing to stop yourself falling down, and ended up both crashing to the floor and rolling into the mats that were sitting against the wall.
I thought it was finally over, but it wasn’t until one mat fell on top of me that it was finally, finally, over.
So much for vampires being graceful, if I were to drink blood this wouldn’t have happened and my mind would be as sharp as ever.
Dana was laughing so hard that I feared she might die from lack of air, she collapsed to her knees from hysterics.
I could literally hear Lucans thoughts from the expression he was giving me, ‘what the f.uck.’ It was probably the first time he had ever in his life seen a vampire trip over, if he knew what I was, that was.
He raised one eyebrow and bit his lower lip while he thought for a minute, debating whether to help me, I think, because he sighed and walked over to my crumpled up heap and held his hand out to me.
I slowly took it, and he pulled me up to my feet. The electricity that ran through our hands when they met was incredible.
I felt hot and flushed and wanted nothing more than to reach up and kiss those perfect lips of his, but I didn’t, thankfully I did have control over my emotions, or did I?
I wondered if it was his necromancy powers that drew me to him, seducing me the same way he had made that vampire lady want him more than she wanted to feed because it was rare for a vampire to kiss someone’s body parts, especially their neck and not want to bite down.
I don’t think he had felt anything because he simply dropped my hand and walked back to the mats he had been laying out on the floor.
Dana was teaching me some moves to escape from different holds, and then she called Lucan over.
He stepped up in front of me while she stayed behind me, taking both my arms, she slowly moved them towards Lucan, showing me where to punch and block, and then she kept her hands on my hips keeping me steady while I placed my hands around the back of Lucans neck, and kneed him without any real force.
I grinned when she said I’d gotten it right, along with the other techniques she’d shown me.
With her hands on my hips behind me and Lucan in front with my hands laced behind his neck, I couldn’t help but think of that scene in dirty dancing where she’s teaching the young girl to dance with Patrick swayze, it looked intimate, and I bet it looked intimate what we were doing right now.
I pushed the butterflies away at the thought of being so close up against Lucan, but failed when Lucan suddenly pushed me up against the wall, one forearm pinning my arms above my head and the other forearm pressed against my neck. “Try to escape this one,” he said.
Dana left us to it and I worried if that was a good idea, he might actually want to kill me for real. I tried to remain calm and reminded myself Dana was only a few feet away doing some solo moves.
I couldn’t free my arm and his body was pressed up against mine firmly enough that I had no room to try and knee him.
I had only been here half an hour and still didn’t really have any idea how to fight, so I managed to wrap my legs around his waist figuring my weight might be enough to topple him to the floor, but he was stronger than I thought.
I tried using my legs to move him from side to side, trying to make him loosen his grip, but to no effect. “Stop doing that,” he gritted. He looked angry, but I didn’t know why.
“But I’m supposed to try and get free?” I made it sound like a question.
“I’m sure you can try without rubbing your groin against mine.”
I gave him a confused look, and he let me go and stepped back.
Dana came over laughing and said, “Es, you looked like you were trying to f***k him, though as a last resort seduction works.”
“I don’t understand?” I said.
“You don’t understand how s**x or seduction works?” Dana asked.
“No, should I?”
They both looked at me then, Lucan looked suspicious while Dana looked bewildered.
She grabbed Lucans arm and gasped, “oh my god! Oh my god, you’re a virgin, aren’t you?”
She was looking at me, and the way they were staring had me blushing hard and unable to make eye contact.
“Is that a bad thing?” I asked meekly.
Dana came over to me and quickly answered, “no, no, it’s adorable, I can’t believe you’re a virgin, surely you’ve done other things like touching and what not, right?”
I frowned, “no, I’ve never even kissed a man before.”
Dana’s hand dramatically clutched her chest and she gasped, “no way! I hope you don’t mind, but me and Lucan, we know you’re a vampire and I can’t believe for as long you’ve been alive that you’ve never been intimate with anyone?”
Fear clutched me and I felt the world swirl for a minute and thought I would pass out.
Apparently my face showed how close I was to fainting because Dana grabbed me and quickly said, “no, Esmeralda, don’t be scared, I know you’re not like other vampires and I swear to you that we won’t hurt you or fire you.”
“Speak for yourself,” Lucan said to Dana, and looked at me with contempt.
She turned to look at him and snapped, “leave the poor virgin girl alone.”
He sneered at that and replied, “she’s not a f.ucking virgin.”
“Why not?” Dana challenged. I didn’t know why she was protective of me, I knew from what I had witnessed the other night that she didn’t like vampires any more than he did.
“I’ve never met a vampire that was a virgin, they are literally designed to look like some one’s wet dream, to seduce and lure you in before killing you like cattle.”
“I don’t feed on blood,” I snapped, I had enough of him assuming who I was as a person just because of what I was.
“Right,” he replied sarcastically.
“I don’t, I don’t like the idea of hurting people, and even if I did feed on blood I wouldn’t kill them for it, we don’t need to kill to feed that’s just what the older and more traditional ones like to do, or the power hungry ones. I don’t like doing something against someone’s will either, so I won’t feed on their blood.”
He stepped towards me threateningly. “There are plenty of willing humans who love blood suckers, you could be feeding on them and that’s still enough reason for you to die in my eyes.”
I shrank back from him and Dana sidled up next to me ready to dive on him if he made a move.
“No, I don’t drink from willing humans either, they usually are always vampire wannabes or fans and I still consider that me taking advantage.”
“Isn’t it against their will when you feed on their energy too?”
“Well I kind of thought that they wouldn’t care about that seeing as I only feed on the negative emotions of people, I take away some of their pain or sadness, I figure that’s more of a win-win.”
He was still looking at me somewhat unconvinced, but he let it go and turned to Dana. “You shouldn’t have f.ucking told her that we knew! I had a plan, and you’ve f.ucking ruined it!” He raged and then stormed out of the hall, leaving us alone.
She rolled her eyes at his back and looked at me. “Sorry about him, he is such a moody f.ucking d.ick, but he won’t hurt you.”
“I’m not so sure,” I laughed weakly.
“I won’t let him, I don’t know why, but I believe everything you’ve said, my instincts have never been wrong before, and I only get good vibes about you.”
We packed up and parted ways, and I decided to have a walk around the town before going home.
