Chapter 1 A New City, A New Beginning
As the sweet chill of May slipped through the open window, Yujin stood quietly in the middle of a room that still felt entirely foreign to him. Cardboard boxes awaiting unpacking surrounded him. Books, clothes, and trinkets dragged along from his past life—all of them waiting impatiently to find a place of their own within these cold walls. A new city. A new home. And a new university he would step into in just a few days. Yujin stepped up to the windowsill and peered outside. Right across the street sat a cozy cafe, a neighborhood market a bit further down, and a bus stop at the corner. People flowed past without stopping, lost in their own daily rush. “Will I really be able to get used to this place?” The quiet question he asked himself weighed heavier on his shoulders than expected, echoing softly through the silent room. His mother’s gentle voice drifted up from downstairs: — Yujin! Can you come down for a second? — Coming! Taking the stairs two at a time, he found his mother, Minseo, standing amidst a sea of clutter in the kitchen. Much like his room, the kitchen had yet to find its soul. Minseo handed him a small, crumpled slip of paper: — Could you do a quick grocery run for us, sweetheart? Yujin scanned the length of the list and raised an eyebrow: — Mom... Is this a grocery list, or a strategic plan to buy out the entire store? Minseo let out a soft laugh she couldn't hold back: — Okay, I admit, it might be a bit much. — Just a bit? — What can I say? We haven't even properly unpacked the kitchen yet. There isn't a single edible thing left in the house. Yujin folded the list carefully and slipped it into his pocket: — Alright, I've got it. The smile on Minseo’s face flickered, replaced for a brief moment by a deep, lingering worry: — Don't wander too far, alright? Yujin caught the trace of fear she tried so hard to hide: — Don't worry, Mom. — It’s a new city, after all... You don't know the people here yet. Yujin offered a reassuring smile: — Mom, I'm just going to the neighborhood market. Not to war. Minseo couldn't help but laugh, the tension leaving her shoulders: — I know... Yujin pulled her into a warm, tight embrace: — I'm really okay. Minseo hugged him back, breathing in his familiar scent: — I know. I just... I want everything to be easy for you. Yujin fell silent for a moment. Moving hadn't been his choice. His father Jisung’s work had forced them to uproot their lives overnight. Leaving behind the neighborhood they knew, years of friendships, and the comfort of familiarity hadn't been easy. And in just a few days, he’d be walking through the gates of a completely unfamiliar university. New faces, new classes, an unpredictable future... He understood his mother's anxiety all too well. — I’ll adjust, Yujin said, trying to infuse confidence into his voice. — Who knows? Maybe good things will actually happen here. Just then, Jisung stepped into the kitchen from the living room: — What are these good things you're talking about? Yujin turned to his father with a grin: — Just talking about our new city. Jisung looked deeply into his son's eyes: — Excited for university? — A little. — Just a little? — Okay, a lot! Jisung let out a warm, hearty laugh: — Good. Settling into a new environment might take some time, but I know you'll handle it brilliantly. Yujin nodded: — I hope so. — "I hope so," Jisung said, placing a steady hand on Yujin's shoulder. — You will. Drawing strength from his father's unwavering posture, Yujin smiled: — Alright then. Here we go. When he stepped outside, the rhythm of the city felt far livelier and more vibrant than he had imagined. Inevitably, Yujin compared it to his old neighborhood in his mind. This place was denser, brimming with energy. Groups of university students filled the sidewalks, buses pulled up to stops carrying commuters, and bright laughter echoed from nearby cafes. “Maybe... just maybe, it won't be so bad after all,” he thought to himself. Stepping through the glass doors of the market, he stayed focused on the slip in his hand for the first few minutes. But as he wandered over to the produce section, a loud clutter from the aisle behind him broke his focus. — Ah! Seeing boxes of pasta scattered across the floor, Yujin paused. A tall, slender worker was crouched down in embarrassment, frantically picking up the fallen boxes. A lively girl standing beside him burst into cheerful laughter: — Minho, seriously? How many times is that today? — Hana, either help me or laugh at me! You can't do both! — Says who? As Hana picked up one of the boxes, she noticed Yujin watching them. She offered him a bright, friendly smile: — Are you new around here? Yujin blinked, caught off guard: — Is it that obvious? — Pretty much. Everyone in this neighborhood knows everyone else, at least by sight. Yujin smiled warmly back: — We just moved here yesterday. — Really? Well then, welcome to the neighborhood! — Thank you. — I'm Hana. — Yujin. — Nice to meet you, Yujin. — Likewise. After that short, comforting interaction, Yujin finished up his shopping and stepped back outside. Looking down at the bags growing heavier by the second, he sighed softly: — With Mom's list, I'm going to end up building serious muscle... Walking back towards home, he realized his first day wasn't turning out as dreary as he had feared. A small, fresh spark of hope began to bloom inside him. But just as he stepped off the curb to cross the street, the deafening roar of an engine tore through the air. A speeding motorcycle swerved past him, missing him by mere inches. Yujin jumped back instinctively. In the panic, one of his paper bags hit the asphalt and ripped open. Bright red tomatoes, crisp apples, and fresh vegetables tumbled across the sidewalk. — Hey! Watch where you're going! The motorcycle had already vanished around the corner at the end of the street. Yujin stared angrily after it. Crouching down, he began gathering the scattered fruits and vegetables one by one. But the initial flash of anger quickly dissolved into quiet resignation, and right there on the sidewalk, Yujin started chuckling softly at his own ridiculous situation. At that exact moment, stopped at a red light on the opposite side of the avenue, Hoon sat in the backseat of a sleek, black luxury sedan. Hoon was watching the world outside with his usual distant indifference. But then, his gaze locked onto the boy on the sidewalk. The wind-ruffled hair, the fallen produce, the cute look of annoyance on his face—and despite all of it, the way he laughed at himself so genuinely... Before Hoon could catch himself, a faint, warm smile tugged at the corners of his usually guarded lips. “How strange...” A moment later, he caught himself, startled by his own reaction. “Why am I smiling?” From the front seat, the driver noticed Hoon’s shifted expression through the rearview mirror: — Did you say something, sir? Hoon immediately withdrew his gaze, instantly slipping back into his cold composure: — Nothing. The traffic light turned green. The car glided forward smoothly. Hoon didn't look back, but the unfamiliar boy he had watched for only a few fleeting seconds had already quietly carved a place for himself in the quiet corners of Hoon's mind. That evening, when Hoon returned home, he found his father, Dojin, sitting in the dim glow of his study. Heavy leather-bound folders lay closed on the desk before him. — You're late, Dojin said, his voice carrying an unmistakable note of authority. — I stayed out for a bit after school. — With whom? — Jiho. Dojin's features instantly hardened: — Jiho again? — Yes. — You place too much trust in people, Hoon. Hoon let out a quiet sigh: — Jiho is my close friend, Father. — Being your closest friend doesn't mean you should lean on him. — Father, not everyone is as bad as you imagine them to be. Dojin stared intensely at his son. Then, unexpectedly, he fell silent. Because in his mind, a nightmare of a summer day—one he had tried for years to bury in pitch-black darkness—flashed back to life. The sun beat down relentlessly; the air was thick with suffocating heat. A young Dojin stood there. On one side stood the woman he loved madly, and on the other, his most trusted friend. The three of them were walking together, their laughter ringing through the street. On that day, Dojin had believed everything in the world was perfect, that this happiness would last forever. Then, the memory shattered. Darkness. Heavy rain. And blood... Dojin stood trembling under the pouring rain, a bloodstained knife gripped tightly in his hand. A few steps away, the woman he loved lay lifeless on the ground. Cradled in her arms was the still, bleeding body of his friend. Her final scream echoed in his mind: “Why did you do this?! Why did you kill him?!” Dojin felt as though he couldn't breathe. He closed his eyes forcefully, and the gruesome memory fractured into dust. — Father? Are you okay? Hoon's concerned voice pulled him out of that b****y swamp of the past. Dojin looked at his son, the cold vacancy in his eyes chilling to behold: — Go to your room. — Are you really alright? — Go study, Hoon. Hoon knew better than to push further: — Okay. As the door clicked shut, Dojin was left alone in the dark room. He wanted to believe the past was long dead and buried, but he knew some sins, no matter how deep they were interred, never truly let go of their creator. The next morning marked the true beginning of Yujin’s new life. Navigating the wide, unfamiliar hallways of the university campus, he stared bewildered at the class schedule in his hands: — 2-B... Where on earth is this room? Turning a corner without looking up, he walked straight into two students. — Ah! I'm so sorry! His books clattered loudly against the floor. The energetic-looking guy he bumped into immediately burst out laughing: — Woah, easy there, champ! No need to crash through the walls on your very first day! — I'm so sorry, I was just trying to find my classroom... Beside him, a quieter guy with glasses crouched down instantly to pick up the scattered books: — Here you go. These are yours. — Thank you so much. Yujin gathered the books into his arms and introduced himself: — I'm Yujin. The energetic guy extended a friendly hand: — I'm Taeyang. Then he pointed to his quiet companion: — And this quiet fellow here is Seojun. Seojun gave a soft nod and a gentle smile: — Nice to meet you, Yujin. Taeyang glanced at the crumpled paper in Yujin's hand: — Looking for Room 2-B? — Yeah, do you know where it is? — Do we know? That’s our class! Yujin's eyes widened with a bright smile: — Really? — Yup! Looks like it's your lucky day, transfer student. You stumbled upon the best guides on day one. Seojun chuckled softly: — Don't mind him, Yujin. Taeyang likes to think he's the official campus welcoming committee. — Hey! I gave someone directions just last week! — You sent them to the wrong building, Taeyang. — A minor detail... Yujin couldn't hold back a genuine laugh. The tightness in his chest that had gripped him all morning melted away completely. A short while later, the three of them stepped out into the sprawling courtyard before class. As they walked, Yujin’s eyes were drawn to someone sitting beneath a massive plane tree. Dark, sharp hair, refined features, and an aura of quiet detachment as he focused on the book in his hands. Dozens of students passed around him, yet none dared cross the invisible boundary surrounding him. Yujin slowed his steps abruptly: — Who's that? Taeyang followed his gaze, his usual cheeky grin softening slightly: — Ah... Him? That's Hoon. Without any logical reason, Yujin's heart skipped a beat, accelerating into an erratic rhythm: — Hoon... Seojun added in a calm voice: — He's one of the top students at the university. A year above us. — Doesn't he have any friends? Why is he sitting all alone? Taeyang shrugged: — He doesn't really talk to people. Built high walls around himself. — Not with anyone at all? — Except one person. — Who? — Jiho. Right on cue, another tall guy approached Hoon under the tree: — Hoon, you haven't taken a single sip of anything since this morning. Jiho offered him a cold drink. Hoon looked up from his book with a soft smile: — Thanks, Jiho. As Jiho sat beside him, his gaze casually scanned the courtyard and quickly settled on Yujin. Noticing that Hoon’s eyes were subtly fixed on the exact same spot, Jiho raised an eyebrow in curiosity: — Do you know that new guy? Hoon instantly snapped his gaze back to his book: — No. A knowing, playful smile formed on Jiho's lips: — Is that so? — Yes, Jiho. Meanwhile, Yujin was still watching Hoon from afar. Beneath Hoon's immaculate, icy composure lay a deep, echoing loneliness. He sat right in the middle of a crowd, yet he looked as though he were miles away from the rest of the world. Taeyang noticed Yujin’s lingering stare and nudged him gently with his elbow: — I wouldn't get hung up on Hoon on your first day. He's untouchable. Yujin laughed softly: — I'm not hung up on him... Seojun added with his usual keen observation: — He's just curious. Yujin didn't take his eyes off Hoon as he whispered: — Yeah... I'm really curious about him. At that exact second, Hoon lifted his head from his book once more. Across the wide courtyard, his gaze met Yujin’s right in the middle. This time, neither of them looked away. For a brief moment, time seemed to stand completely still for both of them. Yujin couldn't explain the pull in his chest. Nor could Hoon decipher the sudden, strange warmth spreading through him. But in that brief, silent exchange, two entirely different worlds were irrevocably bound together. Yujin had moved to a new city. He had stepped into a new university. He had made new friends. And on his very first day, he had locked eyes with the person who was destined to become the most beautiful, most dangerous secret of his life. Hoon... Neither of them had any idea where this story would take them. To be continued...
