The Attack
Amelia's POV-
The sun's rays hit my bed, waking me from my deep slumber. I stifle a long yawn, stretching lazily as I remove my blankets. I check my phone, and it's already seven in the morning.
I groan, setting it aside, as that meant that I should be waking up. I roll out of the bed and start walking towards the window to open it. The moment I open, a gush of cold breeze weeps my face and my body shudders as it reacts to the cold air. I take a deep breath of the fresh air, my eyes set on the dense forest before me. But I hardly paid attention to the tall trees, and green leaves. I was searching for something else far beyond the forest, something I didn't have, something I longed for. I'm almost embarrassed that these very same trees, hold power and magic, more than I probably will ever have.
I sigh helplessly looking at my hands. No matter how much I forced and glared at them, not even a hair moved. I was utterly hopeless.
What kind of a witch am I , if I can't even cast a single spell to save my life. I'll never be as powerful as mother, no matter how much I try. She's the the queen of our covenant, the Azure Covenant, and everyone respects her and she earned every bit of.
Even though they don't dare show it, I know everyone thinks of me as a disgrace. I know I would. Especially with my family history, of great warriors that died with dignity. People still respect them in their graves. And then there's me.
I flinch as I set my eyes up to the sky watching, the sun bright on the sky blue. The leaves danced under it's warmth, and the dew glistening like diamonds.
All too sudden a gust of wind blows, forcing the window to shut, and it's glass shutters on impact.
I stumble back covering my face from the wind, bewildered. With seconds, a fierce explosion, tears the sky, shaking the ground beneath. I flinch, squirming covering my head in fear.
When I look back up, there's a changed in the atmosphere like no other, wind gushing violently along the curtains, rain pattering through the window. The sky growing abyss black with seconds. Loud rumbling breaking through the fragile veil of silence as lighting hisses in the sky. And this was no normal storm, I could sense it. It was something different, and more dangerous.
“ Amelia!" I hear shout from behind. Out of horror, I jerk around ready to attack who ever it was.
“Quinn!?" I retort noticing it was my best friend Quinn. I almost want to relax but she looks with terror in her eyes. “What's going on?" I ask confused and horrified hearing the noise from outside. The screaming didn't sit me well.
“The covenant is under attack. Hurry, your mother said I should get you to safety. We've gotta go!" She orders utterly terrified, motioning me towards the door. The Covenant is under attack? Who dares to even do such a thing.
“But what about everyone else?" I question, peaking out the window once more with concern. The wind blowing rain to my direction, wetting my exposed face. I can see elements of magic spiking through the air and illuminating the suddenly black forest. I didn't know what they fighting but one thing for sure, I can't just and live everyone else here. Even though I'm scared, I know I have to help somehow. They are my covenant, my family.
“ I can't disobey direct orders from the Queen! Let's go, we don't have much time!" She screams impatient, partly looking out the door searching.
" But Quinn —”
" Look Mila I'm just trying to protect you okay!“ she cuts me off, as she storms my direction. I glance out the window again, hearing horrible screames from outside, the battle going intense and more fierce. Even though I shouldn't , I want to help. They are my family, I can't just leave them to die.
" I know I'm not as strong as everyone else but there must be something I can do to help... “ I try to convince her, my heart violently beating against my chest. More and more deafening cries of help echoing everywhere, they make my heart sink.
Then suddenly a loud thud from outside, causes me to jerk towards the window. My eyes widened in horror.
" Mom!!! “ I screech, when I see her lying helplessly on the ground. Without thinking, I climb out of the window, leaving Quinn behind.
" Mila! No! “ I ignore her screaming, as I cut through the line of flowers and small trees. Even think they were scratching my skin I didn't care.
I sprint till I arrive by my mother's side. The smell of blood almost nauseating, as she's covered with way too much blood. And I fear that it's hers. A huge clawed wound covered her whole chest. Who could be capable of such a deep wound?
“Mom!?" I cry in terror, as I try to help her up. She hisses, in agonizing pain.
“Ammy?" She shrieks her deep black eyes even darker in horror. Her strong features smeared in blood and scratches. All my life I've never seen my mother so scared. So helpless and hopeless. “ Quinn, I thought I told to get her away from here!" She hissed in anger and fear of losing me, barely even able to sit straight, let alone stand.
“I'm sorry your majesty. I tried but she wouldn't listen," Quinn cries out in a broken voice, too aghast . She too couldn't comprehend seeing the queen like this. So weak and fragile.
“Mom are you okay. You should heal the wound, or you'll die from blood loss!" I ignore both of them searching her big wound. Blood oozing out, drenching her whole outfit. My heart breaking through my ribs, fearing I might lose her.
“ Its complicated Amelia. I need you to get out of here before it's too late," she breathes heavily, looking back at the forest. Whatever is in this forest, terrified her.
“But Mom? I can't leave you here. You're going to die," I cry examining her wound. " Quinn?“ I look up to her for help. I wish I can heal her, but without my magic I'm nothing. She couldn't even heal herself, with all that power.
“If you're don't leave you're going to die. They've already killed more than half of the covenant. I can't let them kill you too. Take Quinn with you and leave, “ she pleads, but I refuse to let go of her. Hot tears burning my cheeks, clutching into her torn clothes. Terror reverberating through the trees. And we are all startled, when a head comes landing next to us without it's body.
“ Lily… " I mumble, staring horridly at the familiar head. Lilith was such a great warrior, and loving soul. She always treated everyone with love and kindness. She loved peace, she fought for peace. She didn't deserve to die like this. Tears roll down a surge of rage causing my blood to boil. Who's such a ruthless monster to do all this?
“ It's way too dangerous for you to be here. And I can't protect you Ammy,” she sighs again looking at the horror of Lilith's head. "So please do me a favor and go with Quinn. I can't lose you too. I've already lost one of my best warriors,“ she cries cupping my face with her bloody hands. I shake my head not wanting to listen. I have to fight for my people, or at least die trying. I can't just run away like a coward. " I know you want to stay and fight, but this is not the time. When you find your magic, promise me you'll avenge your covenant. You'll make them pay for all the lives we lost today. Promise me, “ she pleads tears running down from her face.
" Come with me then. I can't live you here “ I sob loudly in pain and sadness. The thought of losing her today tore my heart into a thousand pieces. Just to see her looking like this, with terror in her eyes.
“I have to stay here and fight. I'm vowed to protect the covenant with my life. But you didn't... I know you're scared but please promise me," she begged in desperation.
" I promise. I will, even if it's the last thing I do," I vow with my heart. Even if it's not today, they will pay for what they've done to my family. When she hears my words she sighs almost thankful.
" I love you and will always love you more than anything in this world. Remember that," she kisses my forehead, before pressing me into her hug. I couldn't stop tears running down my face, as I thought this could be the last time I ever feel her warmth. Her heart beating against my chest like soothing music, her arms giving me shelter and comfort. Today it was panick, and broken comfort.
“I love you too mom. More than anything," I squeeze her tightly, feeling her blood staining my clothes. Our moment is cut by another terrifying scream and lightning blasting across the sky.
“Now go!" She orders pushing me away. She stumbles to her feet focused on the rustling coming our direction.
“Let's go," Quinn yanks me by hand dragging me away. I run after her struggling to keep my eyes off my back.
And I couldn't be more surprised, when I see a huge monster leaping out of the trees. It was twice the height of a grizzly, with rippling muscles. It flashed it's wolverine claws and razer sharp teeth at one of the witches. It moves at great speed, with immense power. I've never seen anything like that before.
Why isn't she using her magic, I thought as she was greatly overpowered by the monster. She stood no chance, swift movement, it drives it's claws through her chest and spine, and tears her in half, while it's red menacing eyes stare right at mine. I watch in frozen horror, as it tosses the body aside like nothing, never letting it's eyes off me. It almost seems amused, slaughtering my family.
Rage surges through me, but before I can react Quinn pulls me away.
“ Now's not the time," she tells me, forcing me to follow her. I watch one last time, as I see mom attacking the monster from behind. Giving both me and Quinn, a chance to escape.
As if noticing I was looking, she glances back at me, giving me an assuring nod, before rushing at the monster with all her might and strength with sharp sword in her hands. Quinn drags me away and we disappear into the forest.
A great distance away, we hear another scream. I flinch, as I thought who it might be. “Mom," I moan silently, as I navigate through the spiraling trees. As much as I wanted to go back to the battle, Quinn didn't let go of my hand. Anger thrumming through my veins but it was too late.
' I will a avenge you mom, “ I pledge in my heart as we continue running.
