~Avery's POV
When I was a little girl I used to idolize Austin Stone of my father’s best friend, two years older than me, he had light brown hair, sapphire blue eyes that matched the ring in mine. He was my hero, until we were playing and some mean girls pushed me in the mud, I was wearing the brand new dress my mom had bought me especially for the trip to the visiting pack and he did nothing but laugh at me, along with everyone else.
The next time I saw him he was visiting my pack with his father, he had grown up to be very cute, even my twelve year old self who wasn’t a big fan of boys thought he was cute. I was talking to my cousin who had come to visit from Ireland and we were laughing at a stupid joke he had told me when I caught Austin’s eye, I gave him a shy smile and he glared at me, before turning his head and looking the other way. Instant heart break for my twelve year old self.
When I saw him again I was fourteen, I was at the mall with my mom that was in the city between our packs, I saw he was hanging out with some of his pack members and he was hot. My mom had spotted them a while earlier and was trying to convince me that we should go say hi but I was feeling a little shy, that and I couldn’t help but remember all of my other encounters with him so I was nervous. I finally worked up the courage after some teasing from my mom and as we got closer one of the girls he was with jumped into his arms and kissed him.
It was like a knife to my heart, but at least I knew what kind of guy he was, a complete player. I gave him a disgusted look and convinced my mom to turn around and walk the other way. I don’t know why it bothered me so much that he was a player, or that he didn’t seem to like me, it hurt like hell watching him with that other girl. On the way home from the mall my mom asked me why I was so upset, I explained to her what I was feeling, unsure of why his rejection hurt me so much and she explained that it could be because he was my mate, but neither of us knew it. The thought horrified me, I didn’t want to be mated to a player, so when I had the opportunity to move to Ireland to live with my Uncle and his pack and attend a prestigious boarding school I jumped at the opportunity. I fell in love with Ireland but I never forgot about Austin.
“Hey sweetie,” my mom said popping her head into my room, “are you almost ready for breakfast?” she asked.
I had just returned home from Ireland yesterday, after completing high school with high honours I had decided to stay in Ireland and go to University and then travel around Europe before returning home.
“Yeah, I’m coming” I said stretching my limbs and rolling out of bed, I had the intention of going to morning training but forgot how intense jet leg could be. I had missed my parents and home, but I loved how free I felt being in Europe. I knew my parents were looking forward to retirement soon so it was time for me to step up, my parents weren’t concerned about me being unmated and they were looking forward to handing me the Alpha title. Training had me extremely tough, the Alpha blood in me made me strong and fierce and I could take on just about every male I came across. There were a few that I still struggled to take down, but I could usually outwit them if strength was an issue. I loved to train, it was one of my favourite things to do, I had planned to get in a work out after breakfast and despite still being tired I knew it was time to get up. I met my parents downstairs and entered the dining hall, my dad stood to make a brief announcement about me returning and that I would soon take over the pack causing everyone to cheer. Packs had come a long way in time, with a female being an Alpha not being as taboo as it once was, I knew that my father when I was first born was given a lot of grief about not having a male heir, but times had changed and now packs just wanted someone who could lead and protect them. We sat down and ate our breakfast, we were making idle chit chat when my dad brought up the Blue Lagoon pack.
“It’s Isabelle Stone's birthday tonight. Her father told me they were all planning on going to the bar in town, are you going?” He asked me.
Isabelle and I had been friends when we were little and we had kept in touch while I was living overseas, she knew I was back in town and had asked me to attend her birthday.
"She invited me, so I figured I would go, it's been a while since I've seen anyone." I said.
"I heard her brother still hasn't found his mate..." My mom said causing me to scrunch up my nose.
"That's unfortunate for him," I responded, causing my parents to laugh. They were both aware of my crush on Austin when I was little and I knew they were both still hoping we'd be mates.
"Are Cash and Chloe going?" Tony, my father's Beta asked. Chloe was my best friend and Cash was her twin brother. Cash had always been like an over protective older brother to us, despite being the same age. Our father's were always so proud of how much he looked out for the two of us, even when it annoyed us. But even still Cash was one of my best friends.
"Of course, we've been apart for way too long, the three musketeers are finally back together." Chloe said coming up behind her father and wrapping his arms around his neck giving him a hug from behind.
I excused myself from breakfast so Chloe and I could hit the gym together before we got ready. Despite not being the biggest fan of Austin's I had a few butterflies in my stomach at the thought of seeing him again and I wanted to dress to impress.
