Chapter 6: The Struggle Within Jordan’s body was still trembling, not from the physical exertion but from the raw energy that had surged through her. The aftermath of the battle left a silence that was almost suffocating, the air thick with the remnants of power and the bodies of the fallen Skryds littering the forest floor. Zane stood a few feet away, his back to her, his shoulders taut with exhaustion, but his face was unreadable. She could sense the weight of his thoughts, the worry he tried to hide beneath his wolfish exterior. She couldn’t ignore it anymore. The connection between them, the power within her—it was undeniable. Every cell in her body hummed with a force she couldn’t control. It scared her, terrified her. She wasn’t prepared for this. “What… what did I just do?” Her voice cracked, barely a whisper in the vast expanse of the forest. Zane didn’t answer immediately. He turned, his amber eyes glowing faintly in the dim light. His expression softened slightly, though his concern was still apparent. “You did what you had to do. You protected yourself, and you protected us. There’s no shame in that.” “But I didn’t just protect,” Jordan protested, stepping toward him, her fists clenched. “I destroyed them. I could feel their lives being torn apart, their bodies breaking… It was like I was ripping them apart from the inside.” Zane’s gaze sharpened, but his voice was calm, measured. “That’s the power I told you about. The power you have inside you. It’s not something you can simply ignore, Jordan. You’re part of something much bigger than yourself. Something ancient.” “I don’t want it,” she spat, her frustration bubbling to the surface. “I never asked for this. I was fine before. I was normal.” “Normal is overrated,” Zane said, his voice laced with a touch of humor, though the tension in his shoulders remained. He stepped toward her, closing the gap between them. “This isn’t something you can run from. But I’m here to help you. We’re going to figure this out, together.” Jordan shook her head, her heart racing. “I don’t know if I can handle this. I’ve always been able to protect myself, but this... this power—it’s too much.” “You don’t have to do it alone,” Zane assured her, his voice low and sincere. “I’m not leaving your side. You can control it, I know you can.” She wanted to believe him, wanted to trust that she could master this overwhelming force. But deep inside, fear gnawed at her. What if she couldn’t control it? What if it consumed her? She had already felt its destructive potential, and that terrified her more than any enemy she could face. “What if I hurt someone else?” Jordan asked, her voice barely a whisper. Zane’s expression softened, and for the first time, she saw the vulnerability in him. “You won’t. Not if I’m here.” Jordan looked at him, seeing the sincerity in his eyes. His words were comforting, but the fear still lingered in the pit of her stomach. She had to do something. She couldn’t just stand here, paralyzed by her own fear. Not with this much at stake. “Let’s move,” she said suddenly, her voice more determined than she had ever felt. “We need to get back to the pack. I need to understand this, and I need to figure out how to control it.” Zane raised an eyebrow, clearly surprised by her sudden shift in attitude. “You sure?” Jordan nodded. “I’m sure. I may not understand all of this yet, but I can’t hide from it. Not anymore.” “Alright,” Zane said with a nod, his respect for her growing with every word. “Then let’s go.” The journey back to the pack was long and quiet, the weight of their conversation still hanging in the air between them. As they walked, Zane filled the silence with stories of the pack, of the ancient lineage Jordan was now a part of. He spoke of the wolves who had come before her, of the battles they had fought, of the powers they had wielded. The more he spoke, the more Jordan realized just how much she didn’t know. But with each step, she also realized something else—she wasn’t as alone as she had thought. Zane’s presence, his unwavering support, was a constant reminder that she didn’t have to face this challenge alone. Together, they would figure it out. --- Chapter 7: Unanswered Questions The pack’s territory loomed ahead, the towering trees parting to reveal the clearing where the Alpha’s home stood. The massive stone structure looked almost like a fortress, its walls steeped in history, in power. Jordan felt a knot tighten in her chest as they approached. She wasn’t sure if it was fear or anticipation, but the closer they got, the more her heart raced. Zane could sense her hesitation and slowed his pace, his hand brushing against her arm in an almost reassuring gesture. “You don’t have to be nervous,” he said softly. “This is your home now too.” “I don’t know if it ever can be,” Jordan muttered under her breath, unsure of where she fit into all of this. She had always been an outsider, and now she was part of a world she didn’t fully understand. They entered the clearing, and Jordan was immediately struck by the sheer number of wolves that surrounded them. The pack was large, its members moving with the confidence of warriors. There was an aura of power that emanated from them, a strength that could be felt in the air. But as they all turned to look at her, Jordan couldn’t shake the feeling that she didn’t belong here. “They’re all waiting for you,” Zane said, his tone careful. “For what?” Jordan asked, feeling her chest tighten. She wasn’t ready for this. Not yet. “For you to take your place,” Zane answered, his voice carrying an underlying note of pride. “You’re the next Alpha.” Jordan’s heart skipped a beat. She had never imagined this—never even thought about it. The weight of his words hit her like a physical blow. She was to be Alpha? The thought was incomprehensible. How could she lead a pack when she could barely control the power inside her? Zane noticed her stunned silence and stepped closer, his eyes softening. “Don’t worry. We’ll train you. It won’t be easy, but you can do it. I believe in you.” Jordan wanted to believe him. She wanted to feel the confidence he was trying to instill in her. But the doubt still lingered. Could she really do this? Could she really become the Alpha this pack needed? But before she could voice her concerns, a figure approached them from the shadows. A tall woman with dark hair, her posture regal and commanding. Her eyes were sharp, piercing, and they fixed on Jordan with an intensity that was almost suffocating. “You’ve arrived,” the woman said, her voice smooth but firm. “The new Alpha. I’m Selena, Beta of this pack.” Jordan met her gaze, feeling the weight of her words. This wasn’t just a title—it was a responsibility. And it scared her more than anything else. Zane stepped forward, his hand resting protectively on Jordan’s shoulder. “Selena, this is Jordan. She’s the one who will lead us now.” Selena’s eyes narrowed, studying Jordan for a long moment. The tension was palpable as the two women stared each other down, sizing one another up. Jordan felt her heart pound in her chest. She wasn’t just a tomboy anymore. She wasn’t just a normal human. She was something far more dangerous—and the rest of the pack knew it. Selena finally nodded, though there was still a hint of skepticism in her eyes. “We’ll see if she’s ready.”
