THE EXAMINATION

As Sandra entered Edward Enterprises, the tall skyscraper cast a long shadow over the busy streets, and the early air was brisk. She tightened her grip on her luggage and straightened her blazer. It wasn't your typical workday. Moses had called her to an early meeting; Daryl, his assistant, had brought the message without providing any context. As Sandra took the elevator to the top floor, her mind was aflutter with potential outcomes. Daryl said, "Good morning, Miss Robert," as she emerged. "Good morning," Sandra said, glancing at Moses's office's closed doors. "What's the matter?" Daryl gave a shrug. He hasn't stated anything. However, he appeared... intense. It didn't help. Before making her way to the door, Sandra mumbled, "Thank you." She knocked. "Enter now." She was startled by the sound of his voice. Sandra pulled open the door and entered. Moses sat behind his desk, looking as menacing as ever in his crisp suit and steely face. Standing next to him was a tall, well-groomed man with a perceptive sparkle in his eyes that she had never seen before. Moses pointed to the visitor and said, "Sandra, meet Mr. Foster." "He's here to evaluate performance." Sandra blinked. "A... evaluation of performance?" "Yes," Moses said in an unintelligible tone. "I have to make sure my team is performing at its best. Foster is going to be watching your work today. The words were like a slap to her. Was her employment still in danger after all the work she had done? Sandra answered cautiously, maintaining a steady tone, "I see." Moses's eyes never stopped. "Miss Robert, this is not a punishment. It's a chance to establish your value. Despite her stomach churning, Sandra nodded. "Comprehensive." He leaned back in his chair and muttered, "Good." "All right, let's get started." Sandra went back to her workstation and began the first assignment. Foster was standing close by, and his presence was unsettling. He put a huge packet in front of her and explained, "This is a financial analysis." It's not complete. It is your responsibility to find the missing information and make precise predictions. You have two hours. Sandra's mind was already racing as she took a quick look at the folder. She opened it and looked at the numbers. Cross-referencing several databases was necessary to close the obvious gaps. She took out her laptop and said, "Understood." Foster remained silent, but his observant eyes served as a continual reminder of the strain. Sandra's fingers sped across the keyboard as she worked. In order to fill in the gaps, she accessed internal systems and pulled up reports and spreadsheets. The clock was running out, but the numbers started to make sense. Her shoulders hurt from tension by the time she was done. She gave Foster the revised analysis after printing it. His face was expressionless as he went over it in silence. "All right?" Unable to conceal her impatience, Sandra inquired. Foster raised his head. “Adequate.” Adequate? Sandra’s jaw tightened, but she forced herself to remain composed. “Anything else?” “Mr. Edward has requested your presence in the conference room,” Foster said, closing the folder. “Immediately.” Sandra’s heart sank. She gathered her things and headed to the elevator, dreading what awaited her. The conference room was a hive of activity when Sandra arrived. Executives in sharp suits sat around the long table, their voices low and serious. Moses stood at the head, his commanding presence silencing the room as Sandra entered. “Miss Robert,” he said, gesturing for her to sit. “You’ll be assisting with this presentation.” Sandra froze. Presentation? She hadn’t prepared for this. Moses seemed to sense her hesitation. “Is there a problem?” “No,” Sandra said quickly, taking the seat next to him. “Good.” He handed her a stack of papers. “You’ll present the financials for the merger.” Sandra’s pulse quickened as she scanned the documents. She’d worked on these numbers, but presenting them in front of this crowd and with Foster watching was another matter entirely. She took a deep breath and stood. “Ladies and gentlemen,” Sandra began, her voice steady despite the nerves clawing at her. “The proposed merger offers significant opportunities for growth. The financial projections indicate a 15% increase in annual revenue within the first year…” As she spoke, her confidence grew. She fielded questions from the executives with poise, citing data and addressing concerns. By the time she finished, the room was silent, and all eyes were on her. “Impressive,” one of the executives said finally. Moses gave a curt nod. “Thank you, Miss Robert. That will be all.” Sandra returned to her seat, relief washing over her. But she couldn’t ignore the sensation that this wasn’t over. Later that afternoon, Sandra was back at her desk, hoping for a minute to breathe. But Foster appeared again, his expression as impenetrable as ever. “Mr. Edward has one final task for you,” he continued, placing another folder on her desk. Sandra opened it, her eyes narrowing. It was a report littered with flaws, the kind that could ruin a deal if left unchecked. “You have one hour,” Foster said. Sandra tightened her teeth. Whoever had prepared this had done a lousy job, and now it was her responsibility to rectify it. She dove in, her mind laser-focused. The flaws were evident, but fixing them required wading through complicated legal jargon and cross-referencing various papers. Time slipped away as she worked, her fingers speeding across the keyboard. By the time she finished, her eyes burned from gazing at the screen. She printed the updated report and delivered it to Foster. As usual, he went over it in silence, then nodded curtly. "You did well today," he replied at last. "However, there is potential for improvement." Sandra remained silent despite becoming agitated at the ambiguous criticism. Sandra went back to Moses's office at the end of the day for what she believed would be her last meeting. As she walked in, Moses's face was unreadable as he looked up. He said, "Sit." With tense nerves, Sandra obeyed. Moses said in a neutral tone, "You've performed well under pressure." However, this is just the start. There are more difficult tasks ahead. Sandra looked up into his eyes, her annoyance rising to the surface. "With all due respect, Mr. Edward, I have repeatedly shown my worth. What more can I do for you? Moses narrowed his eyes and leaned forward. "Miss Robert, I need your loyalty. Furthermore, trust must be earned. The meaning of the words hung in the air. Sandra nodded, but the pressure of his expectations made her chest constrict. Moses leaned back and remarked, "Good." "You're dismissed." Sandra got up and turned to go. Moses's voice, however, stopped her as she got to the door. "Miss Robert?" She looked back. "Watch your back," he added in a tone that was surprisingly informal. The warning chilled her to the bone. Sandra's mind was racing with questions as she walked out of the office. What was Moses trying to say? She felt like a piece in a bigger game, but why? The elevator doors slid closed behind her as she entered. However, the elevator lurched to a standstill as the floor numbers ticked down. Sandra gasped. The hum of machines stopped, and the lights flickered. She murmured, "Great," and hit the emergency button. Nothing took place. Before she could react any further, a voice crackled across the speaker as panic started to set in. The voice whispered, low and strange, "Miss Robert." "We must speak." As the elevator steadily sank against Sandra's will, her heart raced.
