THE GAME'S SHADOWS

Sandra's pulse pounded so loudly that the hum of the equipment could hardly be heard as the elevator dropped with uncanny accuracy. She could still hear the voice that had cracked through the speaker. "Miss Robert, we must speak." Sandra, breathing heavily, hit the emergency button once more. No one answered. As the numbers crept down, the elevator's chilly, metal walls felt like they were closing in on her. The tone made every nerve tense, even though she had no idea who was speaking or what they intended. On the twenty-third story, the elevator broke down. The hallway was dimly lighted and deserted when the doors slid open. Sandra hesitated as her gut told her to stay inside. The voice said, "Go outside." Sandra forced herself to move despite her racing heart. As she entered the hallway, her heels made a clicking sound on the marble floor. She was trapped on a floor she had never been to before when the elevator doors closed behind her. Her eyes darted to every corner and shade as she looked about. There was a sense of impending danger in the hush that pervaded the air. Something buzzed softly in her pocket. When Sandra took out her phone and saw Emma's name on the screen, she felt a wave of comfort. "There's a problem, Emma," Sandra said in a shaky whisper. Before she could continue, however, a figure emerged from the darkness and the phone fell from her grasp. The man's voice matched the elevator speaker's as he said, "Miss Robert." He wore a dark suit that blended into the gloomy light, and he was tall. His face was angular, pointed, and completely strange. "Who are you?" Sandra's voice was louder than she felt as she demanded. The man held up a hand in a peace sign, palm up. "I wish no damage to you. Victor is my name, and I'm here to warn you. "Warn me?" Sandra repeated, terror mingling with uncertainty. With a steady stare, Victor nodded. "Miss Robert, you have attracted the interest of influential individuals. those who will do whatever it takes to reach their objectives. Additionally, you are obstructing their path. Sandra stepped back. "I have no idea what you're discussing." Victor remarked, "You're smarter than that." Moses Edward is your employer. You are in the crossfire just for that. Sandra felt sick to her stomach. "If the merger is an issue—" Victor cut in, "It's about much more than that." "This merger is just the beginning. There is a war going on, and you have unintentionally become involved in it. Sandra shook her head, attempting to take in what he had said. "What are you looking for from me?" Victor's gaze stayed piercing, but his face softened. "I wish to assist you. However, you must pay close attention. Sandra was about to reply when a fresh sound—the distinct, piercing click of approaching footsteps—reverberated down the corridor. Victor's face grew serious. "There is no more time." His voice trailed off to a whisper as he moved closer. "Never put your trust in anyone, especially your loved ones. Derek Collins is someone you should avoid if you value your life. "Derek?" Sandra muttered, her thoughts racing. As the footfall increased in volume, a woman's voice could be heard. "What are you doing, Victor?" Sandra turned and saw a woman coming toward her, tall, graceful, and powerful, with a presence that was equal to Moses's. Her piercing gaze first fell on Victor and then on Sandra. The woman stated in a cold tone, "You weren't supposed to involve her." Victor stood up. "She must be aware." A chilly smile curved the woman's lips. "And you believe this is beneficial?" Sandra's perplexity grew as she glanced between them. "Could someone please explain the situation?" Ignoring her, the woman moved toward Victor. “As usual, you have gone too far.” Victor did not back down. "After all is said and done, you will thank me." The woman glanced across at Sandra. "Miss Robert, go. Ignore that this conversation ever took place. Sandra paused, her intuition urging her to ask questions. However, she could tell by the woman's tone that it wasn't a request. Victor responded, "Go," in a milder tone. "And keep in mind what I said." As Sandra turned and made her way back to the elevator, her thoughts were racing. As if on cue, the doors opened, and she entered. Sandra was back in her office, sitting at her desk with shaking hands. She couldn't get the experience out of her head; it felt unreal. Derek Collins. The name weighed heavily on her thoughts with implied meanings. Only by reputation did she know Derek, Moses's most vicious adversary. However, why was she being alerted to him? The buzzing sound of her phone interrupts her thoughts. Sandra spotted Moses's name as she looked at the screen. Moses's harsh, demanding voice said, "Miss Robert." "Where are the most recent merger projections?" Sandra blinked, trying to regain her composure. "I'll send them out immediately." "Make sure you do," he continued in a tone that left no space for disagreement. After hanging up, Sandra opened her laptop and forced herself to concentrate. But as she worked, she kept thinking about what Victor and the enigmatic woman had said. Sandra brought the estimates to Moses's office a few hours later. As she walked in, he hardly raised his head. He pointed to the side of his desk and said, "Set them there." Sandra set the folder aside while continuing to stare at him. Moses seemed different today despite his imposing presence; there was a tenseness in his shoulders and a flash of something inscrutable in his gaze. Even she surprised herself by asking, "Is everything okay, Mr. Edward?" At last, Moses raised his head and met her gaze with his blue eyes. He appeared to be about to say something for a second. Then his face became stern. He responded dismissively, "Miss Robert, concentrate on your work." Sandra turned to go after swallowing a sigh. Her phone buzzed once more as she entered the corridor. It was an unidentified number this time. She paused before responding. "Hello?" She felt shivers down her spine when she heard a familiar voice say, "Miss Robert." "Derek Collins," Sandra muttered as she gripped the phone more tightly. Derek's tone was full with laughter as he said, "Ah, so you've heard of me." "What are you looking for?" Her voice more steady than she felt, she demanded. "Only to give you a chance," Derek said with ease. "I am aware that Moses might be challenging. It must be quite taxing to work for him. Sandra's mouth clenched. "I don't want to buy anything you're selling." Derek's tone darkened as he replied, "That's unfortunate." "Because it's rarely a good idea to refuse me." The line died. Sandra's heart was pounding as she gazed at her phone. Together with Derek's implicit threat, Victor's warning suddenly returned. Her inbox rang with a fresh message before she could comprehend what had just transpired. With a gasp, Sandra opened it and saw the subject line: "RE: Internal Investigation – Confidential." The email was succinct but eerie: Miss Robert, we must talk about your role in the recent events. Tomorrow at 8 a.m., meet me in the boardroom. —Derek Collins Sandra closed her laptop with shaking hands. Was she involved? At least she hadn't done anything on purpose. However, it appeared that she was now being pulled farther into a game that she didn't comprehend. Sandra remained motionless at her desk, her thoughts buzzing with potentialities as the office lights faded around her. Derek's call, Victor's warning, and the mysterious email all made no sense, yet they all led to the same thing. She was in danger.n
