Prologue :The Last Song
The Grand Symphony Hall had never been this quiet. More than three thousand people filled the velvet seats beneath glittering crystal chandeliers, yet not a single voice rose above a whisper. Cameras from around the world pointed toward the stage, their red recording lights glowing like tiny stars in the darkness. Tonight was the Aurora Crown Final. For every student at St. Aurora Academy of Music, this was more than a competition. It was the stage they had dreamed about for years—the one performance that could change the course of their lives forever. Behind the curtain, Kai Carter tightened his grip on the neck of his guitar. His palms were damp. Not from fear. From the memory of every promise that had led him here. Across the stage, seated before a gleaming black grand piano, Aria Bennett closed her eyes and drew a slow, steady breath. The spotlight found her first. As always. She looked breathtaking in a midnight-blue gown that shimmered like the night sky, but Kai noticed what no one else did. Her fingers trembled. Only slightly. Only enough for him to see. He walked over and crouched beside her. “You ready?” he asked softly. Aria smiled. The same smile that had changed his life two years ago. “I’ve never been more ready.” The announcer’s voice echoed through the hall. “Ladies and gentlemen… representing St. Aurora Academy… please welcome Echo Horizon.” The audience erupted into applause. Kai took his place. Noah adjusted his microphone. Mia rested her fingers on her bass. Ethan twirled a drumstick before catching it effortlessly. Lucas stood behind the keyboard and production console. The conductor raised his baton. Silence settled over the hall once more. One… Two… Three… Aria lowered her hands onto the piano. Her fingers pressed the first chord. She froze. Nothing. No melody reached her. No gentle vibration. No beautiful harmony. Only silence. For one terrifying heartbeat, she wondered if the entire world had forgotten how to sing. The orchestra continued. Kai looked toward her. Something was wrong. He knew that expression. He had seen it only once before. It was the look of someone trying desperately not to fall apart. Aria kept playing. Not because she could hear the music… …but because she remembered every note by heart. A single tear escaped the corner of her eye. Kai stepped closer, matching every rhythm she could no longer hear. He watched her hands instead of listening. He became her heartbeat. Her timing. Her courage. One by one, the rest of the band followed. The music grew stronger. The audience leaned forward, captivated by an emotion they couldn’t explain. When the final note faded, the hall exploded into a standing ovation. Thousands of people rose to their feet. Some were cheering. Some were crying. Some simply stood in stunned silence. To them, it had been a flawless performance. To Aria… It had been a concert performed in complete silence. As the curtain slowly fell, she turned toward Kai. Her voice was barely above a whisper. “I couldn’t hear a single note…” Kai took her trembling hands in his. His answer came without hesitation. “Then I’ll become the music you can always find.” Aria closed her eyes. For the first time that night, she allowed herself to cry. Outside, the applause continued to thunder through the hall. Inside, a promise was born that no audience would ever hear. A promise carried not by sound… …but by love. Two Years Earlier…
