Spencer Laurier tells me I am too striking to ever be the marrying kind, and even after three years of dating, he has never once mentioned marriage, much less actually proposed, and he even makes me wear a hat when I attend his birthday party.
For his thirtieth birthday, he books out the entire top-floor restaurant and invites all his close friends, but when someone accidentally knocks my hat off, the whole room goes silent for a few seconds, and every eye in the place is drawn to my face, and everyone looks completely stunned.
Spencer sets down his glass with a visible frown, and that seems to snap everyone out of it. Everyone quickly jumps in to smooth things over, offering remarks like, "Mr. Laurier is right. That kind of look is fine for a bit of fun, but taking her out in public just invites gossip," and "If he actually married her, people would assume she used her face to get him, and that would hurt Laurier Corporation's image."
Spencer, convinced I took my hat off on purpose, looks at me with barely contained anger and says, "You hear that? Do not get any ideas about using that face to seduce men or climb the social ladder. With your background, even as some man's mistress, nobody would ever take you seriously."
Then, he slips off the matching ring we both wear and tosses it onto the table, clearly meaning to humiliate me and drive home the point that no one will ever want to marry me. I am so mortified that I dig my nails into my palms.
But then, out of nowhere, a young man sitting in the corner reaches over, picks up the ring, and holds it as if he has just found something precious, his eyes lighting up as he says, "I'll take it."
