Chapter 1
"Darling, why is the door locked? Can you let me in to see our heirs?" Leon asked through the gaps in the heavy iron door.
That voice was extremely gentle, even tinged with the joy of an expectant father. But to my ears, it was more terrifying than a death warrant from the devil himself.
Cold sweat instantly soaked my hospital gown. I stared at the two babies in my arms, trembling. Nothing. Still nothing. I desperately examined their tiny backs, but their fair skin was spotless; there was no trace of the golden totem mark that represented the mafia's pure bloodline. They were born with clear cries, but they were ordinary human infants completely devoid of wolf traits.
"Darling?" Leon's voice cooled. "Why aren't you saying anything? Is something wrong with the babies?"
I shuddered violently. My mind flooded with the cruel memory of Leon throwing that traitor from the rival family into the open sea to be fed to sharks. That traitor had merely stolen a document, yet Leon had shattered his bones inch by inch. And I had given birth to two "mongrels" without a trace of the wolf clan's bloodline.
"No!" I cried out, my voice cracking with terror. "Leon, don't come in!"
The breathing outside instantly grew heavy.
"Give me a reason," Leon said, his tone flat and dangerous.
"I just gave birth. I'm covered in blood and sweat, and I look terrible," I bit my lip hard, tasting the metallic tang of blood. "Wait another ten minutes. I want to freshen up before seeing you. Please, Leon."
It was silent outside for a full three seconds.
"Fine. Ten minutes. You know how much I hate waiting," Leon replied.
Footsteps faded away.
I whipped my head around, looking at George trembling in the corner.
"Give me two doses of the death-feigning drug," I lowered my voice, like a cornered mother beast.
George collapsed onto the floor.
"Madam, you're mad. Those are the master's flesh and blood," George stammered.
"They don't have the mark." I grabbed George by the collar and thrust the two babies in front of his face. "Look closely. They're ordinary humans."
George's eyes widened as he gasped. "How... how is that possible? The master is a pure-blooded werewolf."
"If Leon sees them, not only will the children die, but you, the doctor who delivered them, will be chopped into pieces and fed to the dogs," I said, grabbing the scalpel from the tray and pressing it against the major artery in George's neck. "Inject them and fake the stillbirths. Or I'll slit your throat right now."
George trembled violently. "Madam, the death-feigning drug is extremely harmful to infants. It might..."
"Inject," I said, my eyes bloodshot, tears brimming. Only by deceiving Leon first could I save their lives.
With trembling hands, George fished out two clear syringes from the bottom of the medical kit. The moment the needle pierced the babies' tender skin, I covered their mouths tightly, stifling any cry.
The drug took effect extremely fast. The two children's originally rosy cheeks quickly turned bluish-purple, their faint breathing stopping completely. Their body temperature dropped bit by bit. I reached out with a trembling hand to check their breathing. My heart felt as though it were being torn apart.
A loud bang rang out. The ten minutes weren't even up when the iron door to the underground chamber was kicked open. Leon's tall figure strode in, carrying a strong scent of blood. His golden vertical pupils gleamed with an icy, menacing glint in the dim lighting.
"Time's up. Where are my heirs?" Leon demanded, striding to the operating table.
His gaze fell upon the two lifeless, bluish-purple infants. The air instantly froze. Leon's smile slowly vanished, replaced by a suffocating chill.
"What happened?" Leon's voice was low and dangerous.
He grabbed George by the throat and lifted him clean off his feet.
George kicked his legs frantically, his face going crimson. "Madam was too weak. The babies were deprived of oxygen in the womb for too long, and by the time they were born... they weren't breathing."
"Trash," Leon spat, and slammed George against the wall.
A dull thud rang out. George coughed up a large mouthful of blood and passed out cold. Leon turned his head, his golden eyes fixed on me. He looked at me like I was already dead.
"Leon..." I collapsed to the ground, tears streaming down my face. "I'm sorry, I couldn't save our children."
He walked over and towered over me. Icy fingers gripped my chin, forcing me to raise my head.
"Sophia Hernandez, you'd better pray that this was really just an accident," he said, his thumb rubbing hard against my lips, leaving a bloody streak. "If I find out you tampered with anything, I'll cut the flesh from your body piece by piece and feed it to my wolves."
I trembled all over, tears splashing onto the back of his hand. "I didn't... I really didn't..."
Leon coldly shoved me aside and took out a handkerchief to wipe his hands in disgust. "Get rid of these two bodies. I don't want to look at them," he ordered.
