Love in The Darkness: CHAPTER 1-THE DEAL
CHAPTER 1: THE DEAL Lian Rou's heels clicked sharply against the marble floor of the Luo family estate. The silence in the hall pressed against her like a storm about to break. Her father stood near the window, his shoulders hunched in a way she hadn't seen before—like a man defeated. She crossed her arms. “What’s going on, Father?” He didn’t turn around. “You need to pack your things, Lian. You’re leaving tonight.” Lian blinked. “What? Why? Where am I going?” He turned then, and for the first time in her life, she saw fear in his eyes. “You’re getting married.” Lian’s heart dropped into her stomach. “Excuse me?” “To Kai Ren,” he said, each word heavier than the last. “The head of the Ren syndicate.” Lian took a step back as if slapped. “You can’t be serious. He’s a criminal. He’s—he’s a monster.” “He’s also the only reason our family will survive.” Silence fell like ice between them. Lian stared at her father, hoping this was some elaborate test, some cruel joke. “He offered to forgive my debts if you marry him. If not… he’ll destroy us. All of us.” Lian’s voice trembled. “So you’re selling me off to save yourself?” His silence was answer enough. She turned away from him, pacing the room. Her heart was racing so fast she thought it might break out of her chest. “You know what they say about him, don’t you? That he kills without blinking. That no one ever leaves once they enter his world.” Her father didn’t respond. “And what if I refuse?” “Then he’ll take you by force.” The words hung in the air. “But if you go willingly, he promised to keep you safe.” Safe. What a lie that sounded like coming from a man like Kai Ren. Lian’s jaw clenched. “I should’ve never trusted you. You’re giving me to the devil.” There was a knock at the door. A man in a sleek black suit entered—tall, sharp, and expressionless. “The car is ready,” he said with a nod. Lian glared at him. “Let me guess. One of Ren’s dogs.” The man didn’t flinch. “Mr. Ren is expecting you. He advises you don’t delay.” Her father looked at her with pleading eyes. “Please, Lian. This is bigger than you. Bigger than any of us.” She wanted to scream, to break something. But what was the point? Her fate had already been sealed with a signature on some paper, probably stained with blood. “I need five minutes,” she muttered, storming up to her room. Inside, she locked the door and let herself finally fall apart. Her chest tightened, the tears hot and angry. She wasn’t some porcelain doll to be traded. She was a woman with dreams, with a life. And now it was being ripped away. She packed quickly—just essentials. Not because she was ready to go, but because she needed to survive. She wasn’t going to make it easy for Kai Ren. If he thought he could own her, control her, he was in for a war. Downstairs, the black car waited with its door open like a trap. The man in the suit gestured silently. Lian turned to her father one last time. “If I survive this, I’m never coming back.” He didn’t reply. He couldn’t even meet her eyes. She slid into the backseat, the leather cold beneath her. The city blurred past the window as they drove. The silence in the car was deafening, but Lian’s mind was louder—planning, fearing, bracing. Thirty minutes later, the car pulled up in front of a modern high-rise overlooking the city skyline. Towering glass and steel loomed over her like a cage made of luxury. As she stepped out, her breath caught. Kai Ren stood at the entrance, waiting. Tall, dressed in black, his presence exuded power and danger. Sharp jawline, cold dark eyes, and the kind of calm that made her skin crawl. He looked like the villain from every story—and somehow worse in real life. His gaze swept over her slowly, like a predator sizing up its prey. “Lian Rou,” he said smoothly. “Welcome to your new life.” “I didn’t agree to this,” she snapped. “You didn’t have to,” Kai said, stepping closer. His voice was deep and controlled, but there was steel behind every word. “Your father’s signature was enough. You belong to me now.” “No one owns me.” His lips twitched into the faintest smirk. “You’ll learn, wife.” Lian’s stomach twisted. Wife. She didn’t even know when the ceremony was planned—or if there would be one. All she knew was that her freedom had ended the moment she stepped into that car. He turned and gestured for her to follow. “You’ll stay in my penthouse until the wedding. After that, you’ll move into my private estate.” “What if I run?” Kai stopped and looked over his shoulder, eyes glinting. “Then I’ll hunt you down,” he said simply. “And I never lose.”
