CHAPTER 13: THE DESIRE WITHIN THE CHAOS The night seemed to stretch on forever as Lian lay in bed, her mind racing, her body still burning with the heat of Kai’s kiss. She could feel his touch everywhere, every part of her still thrumming with the pulse of desire he had ignited. I hate him, she thought fiercely. I have to hate him. But deep inside, there was something she couldn’t deny. Something darker, something raw, that twisted in her chest whenever he was near. She wanted him. The thought disgusted her, but she couldn’t escape it. No matter how much she tried to convince herself otherwise, no matter how many times she told herself that he was a monster—he was also the one who kept saving her, the one who kept pulling her back when she thought she could escape. And that terrified her. Her thoughts were interrupted by the sound of a knock on her door. She sat up quickly, heart pounding in her chest, a surge of adrenaline rushing through her veins. It was too soon. Kai couldn’t be here already. Could he? She rose from the bed and walked toward the door, trying to steady her breathing. The weight of his presence still lingered in the room like a shadow, and even the thought of him made her feel both alive and sick at the same time. When she opened the door, however, it wasn’t Kai who stood there—it was Jian, his face unreadable, his posture as stiff as always. “Lian,” he said, his voice quieter than usual, though still commanding. “Kai wants to see you again. Now.” She froze, a cold chill running down her spine. She wanted to resist, to refuse, but the thought of what might happen if she didn’t obey was enough to send her nerves on edge. Without a word, she nodded. Jian didn’t wait for her to respond—he simply turned on his heel and walked away, expecting her to follow. Reluctantly, she moved after him, her feet heavy with each step. It was the same path she had walked so many times before, but each time it felt like a descent into something darker, something more dangerous. The elevator ride was silent, and the tension between them thickened with every floor they passed. When they reached Kai’s private floor, Jian led her down the familiar hallway, stopping at the same large doors that led into Kai’s domain. Lian’s heart was pounding in her chest as she stood there, her nerves frazzled, her mind a whirlwind of conflicting emotions. She didn’t want to go in. Didn’t want to face him again, not after what had happened between them the last time. But she had no choice. She had never had a choice. Jian knocked once, then opened the door, stepping aside to let her enter. The room was dimly lit, with soft shadows flickering across the walls from the lights outside. Kai stood by the window again, his back to her, a silhouette against the city lights. He seemed as untouchable as ever, a man who controlled everything around him. She swallowed hard, stepping into the room, her heart thundering in her chest. The moment the door clicked shut behind her, she felt the air shift. His presence filled the room, oppressive and commanding. “You’re late,” he said, his voice smooth but with an edge of warning. He turned to face her, and for a moment, she saw that same dark intensity in his eyes that had haunted her the last time they’d been this close. “I wasn’t late,” she snapped, her voice a little too sharp. “You didn’t say anything about being on a schedule.” Kai’s lips twitched in a smile that wasn’t a smile at all. It was something darker, something that sent a thrill down her spine despite herself. “No, I didn’t,” he said, his voice dropping lower, sending a shiver through her. “But I expected you to be obedient. To be here when I called for you.” Lian’s breath hitched, her chest tightening. Obedient. That word again. The one that made her skin burn, that made every part of her want to rebel. But as she stared into his eyes, she felt something shift within her. His gaze was magnetic, pulling her in, almost forcing her to obey. She hated how easily it worked. “I’m not your puppet,” she managed to say, her voice trembling slightly. “I’m not going to just fall in line because you tell me to.” Kai took a step toward her, his movement slow and deliberate. His eyes never left hers, and the air between them seemed to thicken, like something was about to crack wide open. “You will,” he said quietly, his voice a low promise. “Because you know deep down, you want to.” Before she could respond, he closed the distance between them, his hand reaching out to grab her chin. The touch was firm, not harsh, but there was no mistaking the dominance in his grip. His thumb stroked across her jaw, and her heart raced, her breath hitching. “You know what happens when you push me away, Lian,” he murmured, his lips brushing against her ear. “You might try to fight it, but you’ll always come back to me.” She swallowed hard, her chest tightening. The warmth of his body was overwhelming, the scent of him, intoxicating. Her hands were at her sides, clenched into fists, but every part of her wanted to reach out, to pull him closer, even though she knew she shouldn’t. Kai’s lips brushed against her neck, the soft pressure sending a jolt of heat through her. Her body betrayed her once again, a rush of desire coursing through her veins. She wanted to push him away, to shove him off, but something inside her—the same thing that had made her kiss him back in the elevator—was drawing her to him. She leaned back, trying to regain some control, but his hand shot out, gripping her wrist and pulling her back toward him. His lips crushed against hers in a hard kiss, and this time, she couldn’t deny the desperate ache that flared inside her. It was like he was drowning her in his presence, and she couldn’t breathe without him. When he finally pulled back, both of them breathing heavily, Lian’s mind was spinning, her body trembling with a mixture of anger, confusion, and something else—something she didn’t want to name. “You’re mine,” Kai said, his voice low and dangerous, a command in every word. Lian wanted to fight, wanted to scream, but she couldn’t. Not anymore. The lines were blurring, and for the first time, she wasn’t sure where she ended and he began.
