Chapter 1
The second I heard the door swing open, I wiped my tears away fast and shoved my phone deep into the folds of my wedding dress.
I had been blind for three years, yet right then I could see with brutal, perfect clarity.
Adrian Carter was still wearing the same suit he had married me in, looking as sharp as ever, except the woman wrapped in his arms was Bianca Moore.
Her wedding dress was covered in crushed diamonds, a hundred times more extravagant than mine, and she smiled at me with sugar-sweet satisfaction.
"We're heading out now, Summer. Wouldn't want to intrude on your big night."
Someone behind her shoved the door hard, and the slam cracked through the room like a slap across my face.
The light I'd spent my whole life longing for was finally here, and all it did was illuminate every bit of filth and shame around me.
In an instant, they all closed in around me, circling tight like I was something cheap they were about to unwrap.
The next second, Bianca's hand slid under her skirt. She hooked the lace of her panties with one finger, pulled them off, and pressed them into Adrian's palm with a smile.
Her hands moved fast, signing: "Think of it as a preview. Get me that 99th photo, and tonight I'm yours."
Adrian looked down at the soft fabric in his hand, and the corner of his mouth curved into the faintest smile. Then he dipped his head and buried his face against my neck. "You've been waiting a while, haven't you?"
I used to crave that feeling more than anything. His breath, the weight of him. It was the only thing that ever made me feel safe inside all that darkness.
But now the scent of Bianca's perfume clung to his skin, thick and cloying, and it stung my eyes until I thought I might cry.
"Summer, I finally married you. We should make tonight unforgettable."
He said it with a catch in his throat, with the kind of devotion that could make any bride's heart stutter. Too bad I could see the truth now. The hand he wrapped around my waist still had its fingers locked tight around Bianca's, and he never loosened his grip, not for a single second.
He pulled the ribbons of my dress loose, inch by inch.
Bianca raised her phone, smiling, and hit record.
Just as Adrian's hand reached for my wedding dress, I caught his wrist.
"Adrian," I asked softly, "is it just the two of us in here?"
He paused, but his voice stayed smooth. "Of course."
I didn't let go. My blind eyes drifted past him, landing on nothing.
"Then why do I hear so many people breathing?" I tilted my head. "Do we need cameras for a little wedding prank?"
The room fell absolutely silent.
Adrian's breath hitched. He told himself it was just my sharp hearing, but I saw the flicker of guilt cross his face.
Bianca, though, didn't miss a beat. She held her phone higher, a smug smile curving her lips. "Summer, how would you even know I'm recording if you can't see? I'm just capturing a memory of your big night."
She stepped closer, shoving the screen nearly into my face.
"GRRRR!" Stella, who had been quietly curled at my feet, bristled and lunged at Bianca's ankle.
"AHH!" Bianca shrieked, stumbling backward.
The others yelped in panic.
Adrian shoved me aside without thinking. I hit the floor hard, the back of my skull cracking against the wood.
He yanked Stella off Bianca and spun on me. "Summer! Get your dog under control!"
I sat among the fallen layers of my dress, looked up at him shielding her, and laughed.
"Adrian. What am I to you?"
His mouth opened, but nothing came out.
Bianca whimpered in his arms, rubbing her ankle, still playing the victim. "Summer, don't be mad. It was just a little game. We didn't mean anything by it."
"A game?" I stood up, my gaze cold. "Then take your clothes off. Let us all have a little game too."
Her face went pale. Tears filled her eyes on cue, like she was the one who'd been wronged.
"That's enough!" Adrian's voice cut through like ice. "Apologize to Bianca."
Apologize? They filmed me. They bet on me. They turned my wedding into their gambling den.
And not one of them ever said sorry.
I smiled coldly. "She strips, and I'll apologize. Otherwise, every single one of you owes me one."
Bianca bit her lip, shoved Adrian away, and ran out.
Every time she'd stormed off before, he'd always chased after her without a second thought.
"Adrian." My voice was quiet. "If you walk out that door tonight, we're done."
He paused. But he thought I was just threatening him with divorce, and he went after her anyway.
The door slammed shut. The room went quiet.
I crouched down and pulled Stella into my arms.
In the dim light, my phone glowed. The number I'd buried deep in my contacts had already lit up with a dozen messages.
Dad: Summer, Daddy's coming for you.
Dad: Your brothers are on the road.
I stared at the screen for a long time. Then I typed back.
Summer: Dad. I want to come home.
