CHAPTER 7 Chaco kept watch for escape routes off the road to avoid encountering another block. He drove with his lights off, creeping along the road to muffle the noise of the engine, and to staunch dirt clouds. He glanced at his watch. One ten a.m. He planned to find Jude, Bethany, and the girls, then detour to Alberto and his family, scoop everyone into the truck, and make it back to the Walkers before daybreak. Less than a mile from town, a volley of gunshots assaulted him, and his side view mirror shattered. He spied an opening between the trees, jerked the wheel, switched on his lights and gunned it.
