The sun cast a pale glow over the city as Alistair sat on his couch, his phone in his hand. He’d been staring at Riley’s number for the past ten minutes, debating whether to call again. He’d already left her three voicemails and sent a few text messages, but there had been no response. Frustration and concern churned inside him. Riley wasn’t the type to ignore him unless something was seriously wrong. He finally hit the call button again, the phone ringing on speaker. Each ring felt like an eternity, the silence between them growing heavier. But once again, it went to voicemail. “Riley, it’s me. I really need to talk to you. It’s about Sam, and it’s important.
