Marry me
ELARA “Please… I’ll do anything. Just don’t hurt him.” My voice shook as I stepped forward, placing myself between my brother and the men surrounding him. The warehouse smelled of smoke, expensive cologne, and fear. I had never been inside a place like this before. The kind of place where silence felt heavier than words. Where every man standing around me looked like they had done terrible things and had no regrets about it. And in the middle of it all sat him. Darien Russo. The name alone was enough to make people lower their voices. The most feared man in the city. He sat comfortably in a black leather chair, one hand resting on the armrest while the other held a cigar between his fingers. His expression was unreadable as his dark eyes studied me. Not my brother. Me. “Anything?” he repeated. His voice was calm. Too calm. I swallowed. “Yes.” My fingers curled into fists at my sides. “My brother made a mistake. A stupid one. But please… don’t kill him.” A slow silence followed. Then Darien leaned forward. “Three hundred thousand dollars is not a mistake, Elara Voss.” Hearing my name from his lips sent a strange chill through me. My stomach tightened. Marcus had dragged me here with one phone call, telling me only that he needed my help. He never told me whose money he had taken. He never told me who he owed. If I had known it was Darien Russo… I would have never stepped through those doors. “Please,” I whispered. “There has to be another way.” “There is.” Hope flickered inside me. Until his next words destroyed it. “Marry me.” For a moment, I thought I had heard him wrong. The entire warehouse disappeared into silence. “What?” Darien placed his cigar down slowly. “You heard me.” I stared at him. “Marry you?” “Yes.” I let out a small, disbelieving laugh. “This is some kind of joke?” His expression didn't change. “I don't joke about business.” My heart began pounding. “This isn't business. This is insane.” “Your brother owes me money.” His gaze shifted briefly toward Marcus. “Money he cannot repay.” Then his eyes returned to mine. “But you can.” I felt my breath catch. “What does that mean?” “It means you sign a marriage contract. You become my wife. Your brother's debt disappears.” I looked at Marcus. Then back at Darien. “You're serious.” “Completely.” My hands trembled. “You expect me to marry a stranger to save him?” Darien tilted his head slightly. “No.” His voice lowered. “I expect you to decide whether your brother's life is worth your sacrifice.” A cold feeling settled in my chest. Before I could answer, Marcus stepped forward. “Elara.” I turned toward him. His face was pale. “Please.” The fear in his eyes should have made me feel sorry for him. Instead, something inside me broke. Because I already knew. He was going to choose himself. “Marcus…” He couldn't even look at me. “Just agree.” My eyebrows pulled together. “Excuse me?” He swallowed. “Marry him.” The words hit harder than I expected. “You're asking me to marry him?” “It's the only way.” I stared at my brother. My only family. The person I had protected my entire life. And now he was asking me to give up mine. “It's the only way.” I stared at Marcus, waiting for him to laugh. Waiting for him to tell me he was joking. He didn't. A strange numbness spread through my body. “Do you even hear yourself right now?” His eyes flickered with guilt for a second. Then fear replaced it. “Elara, please. I don't want to die.” “And you think I want to lose my life?” My voice cracked. “You think this is easy for me?” “I know it's not,” he whispered. But his next words proved he didn't know anything. “You're strong. You'll survive.” I almost laughed. Survive? That was what people said when they were asking someone else to suffer for them. I looked at the man I had spent years protecting. The brother I had sacrificed for. The brother whose debts I had paid. Whose mistakes I had covered. Whose lies I had carried. And now, when it was finally his turn to protect me… He was handing me over. “Marcus,” I said quietly. “What exactly did you tell him about me?” His silence answered before his words did. “Nothing bad.” “Nothing bad?” My voice rose. “You brought me here and offered me to a dangerous man, and you think there's a good way to do that?” He looked away. “I told him you're a good woman.” A bitter smile touched my lips. “That’s not what I asked.” Marcus swallowed. “I told him you're responsible. That you don't cause trouble. That you're the kind of woman a man would want as a wife.” I felt sick. Not because of what he said. Because of how easily he said it. Like I was something he could trade. Like my life was a solution to his problem. Darien watched us silently from his chair. He didn't interrupt. He didn't need to. The room already belonged to him. “Marcus,” I whispered. My eyes burned. “How could you?” His face twisted. “I’m sorry.” “No.” I shook my head. “Don't say sorry. Sorry is what people say after they make a mistake.” My voice became quieter. “This wasn't a mistake.” His expression changed. “You chose this.” The truth hung between us. Marcus looked down. And somehow, that hurt more than anything. Darien finally spoke. “Enough.” One word. But everyone stopped. His gaze moved to Marcus. “You came here because you wanted your debt erased.” Marcus nodded quickly. “Yes, Mr. Russo.” Darien leaned back. “And your solution was to offer your sister.” Marcus opened his mouth. “I didn't mean—” “You did.” The calmness in Darien's voice was worse than anger. “You made your choice the moment you walked through that door.” Marcus went silent. Darien looked at me. “Do you know what happens when people owe me money, Elara?” I forced myself to meet his eyes. “No.” “They run.” His gaze hardened. “They lie. They beg. They promise things they cannot keep.” A pause. “Your brother brought you here because he believed your life was worth more than his debt.” My chest tightened. “That’s not true.” Darien raised an eyebrow. “No?” He looked at Marcus. “Tell her.” Marcus froze. “Tell her you came here planning to use her.” “I—” “Tell her.” The command in his voice made Marcus flinch. Finally, Marcus whispered: “I didn't know what else to do.” I closed my eyes. A tear slipped down my cheek. There it was. The truth. Not an accident. Not desperation. A choice. Darien reached for a folder on the table and placed it in front of me. The sound of it hitting the wooden surface echoed through the warehouse. I looked down. A contract. My stomach twisted. “Read it.” I didn't move. “What's in it?” “Your marriage agreement.” The words felt unreal. “You really planned this.” Darien's expression remained unreadable. “I plan everything.” I looked at the papers. A name. A signature line. A future I never chose. “Refuse,” Darien said quietly, “and your brother leaves here with his debt.” My head lifted. Hope flickered. Until he continued. “And the consequences of that debt will follow him.” I understood. This wasn't a choice. Not really. My fingers hovered over the contract. Then Darien said something that made my heart stop. “Choose carefully, Elara.” His eyes locked with mine. “Because once you sign my name beside yours, there is no going back.”
