The Rise Of The Alpha Female

I can see the moon as it sagged in the night sky like a tired eye, spilling a ghostly light across the Moon Crest palace yard. From somewhere out in the dark I hear the wolves howling in a low, long notes that actually crawled under my skin. It was supposed to be the sound of belonging… the sound of brotherhood. But it wasn’t for me. Not really. I could hear it, I could feel it, and even ache for it. But I knew deep down within me that I would never be one of them. My name is Naomi. And unlike the other members of our pack, I cannot transform. They say it is because of my family's omega lineage that I am left like this. A rumour that had held tenaciously onto me for years like my shadow. Living in the palace should have been a dream to me, but No. The palace felt like a gilded cage to me. My mother, Luna Isabella married the AlphaKing. And we were brought here. Supposedly, for our protection. But the palace walls seemed to hold more secrets and dangers of their own, than the entire pack out together. And the worst of which was Lucas. Lucas is the AlphaKing's younger brother. And a force to be reckoned with. His extraordinary strength had earned him the position of the Chief Warrior of our pack. And his royal blood also meant he could do just anything and get away with it. He was notorious for his cruelty, especially towards the maidens of the palace. And I hated him for it. One evening, as I was returning from the packs library where I go to read when I want to be invincible. I heard a commotion in the courtyard. Curiosity got the better part of me, and I crept closer to the courtyard to see what it was, and stayed hidden in the dark corner to be sure I was trying to put myself in danger. What I saw while hiding there, made my blood boil. Lucas had cornered one of the maidens of the palace in the courtyard. A young girl named Alicia. She was trembling, and her eyes were wide with fear as Lucas stood towering over her with a cruel smile playing on his lips. "Please, sir. I didn't mean to spill the wine .". Alicia was pleading with a shaky voice. But Lucas laughed mischievously, giving out a sound that sent chills down my spine. "Do you think an apology is enough to cover this crime? You need to learn a lesson for being careless, slave girl..!". he added, and then grabbed the girl by the arm roughly. His grip was so tight that I could see the pain reflect on Alicia's face. She was in pain, yet couldn't break free from Luca's rough grip. That so much hurt me that I couldn't stand by and watch any longer. Summoning all my courage, I stepped out of the dark corner and stood in the middle of the courtyard. "Let her go, Lucas..!". I demanded. My voice was not sharp, but it was steady despite the fear that was gnawing at my insides. Lucas turned at the sound of my voice, and face me with his eyes narrowed. "Well, well, well..! If it isn't the little she-wolf who can't even shift..!". Lucas said to me, now turning to face me fully. "What are you going to do to me if I don't let her go, Naomi..?! Bark at me..?! Oh ..I'm scared already..!". he mocked me and laughed again smuggishly in a self satisfied manner. Lucas just made his usual jest of me and he was feeling good about it. My blood boiled within me but I balled my fist and tried to keep my anger in check. "What you are doing to that girl is not right and you know it... Just because you are the Alpha king's brother doesn't give you the right to treat people anyhow..". I said with courage. Lucas widened his eyes and released Alicia's arm, who scurried away. And he turned his full attention on me. He took a step closer, with his towering figure casting a shadow over me. But I didn't move. I was half happy that the poor girl was free from his grip, but then..... Here am I. "You think you can tell me what to do?". Lucas sneered at me. "Like you think you have any opinion here?". He continued, reminding me of my place in the palace. But I didn't say a word. I just stayed quiet and only stared at Lucas's shadow. "You are nothing here, Naomi. Nothing but a weak, pathetic Omega..". He added. His words stung, really stung that I suddenly summoned up courage and refused to bow in to Luca's humiliation anymore. I raised my head a little, just a little to look into Lucas's face and spoke. "Strength is not just about physical power, Lucas. It should be about how you treat other people..". I said, looking Lucas straight in the face. For a moment, I thought I saw something in Lucas's eyes. Something like a flicker of remorse. But no, it wasn't. His muggy face quickly replaced by his usual arrogance. And he leaned in towards me with his breath blowing hot against my face. And he spoke with the coldest voice I have ever heard in my life. "You are only here for a reason, Naomi. Just one reason! Step out of line, and I will make sure you regret it!". That was all Lucas said. And with that, he turned and walked away into the palace house. Leaving me standing there with my heart boiling over in anger.
