I ran to my room in frustration and closed the door behind me. The hinges of the door almost pulled out due to the way I forcefully shut the door, and locked it. My heart was already beating very fast in anger, and the anger and frustration in my heart was almost at its peak. The encounter with Lucas made my blood boil within me. I was furious.
The guests rejected me as a bride, and they made ill comments about my father. But that was not the main problem. My anger was Lucas. How dare he assume I would be his wife? What audacity!
I rested my back on the closed door, and slowly slide down to the floor. With my hands, I covered my face in pain. Tears of helplessness started flowing down from my eyes. I wished I could lock the pains out forever, like I could lock the whole world out of my life. All I wanted at that moment was to escape from the palace, and never have anything to do with the royal family again. But I couldn't help thinking about my mother. Luna Isabella. We are in this together, we are both victims of the same cruel circumstances.
"Open this door, this minute..!".
A loud insistent knock on the door jolted me from my thoughts. My mother. Her voice was filled with fury. I hesitated, with my heart racing at the thought of facing her wrath. But the knock persisted, and my mother was becoming furious.
"Naomi you must open this door now, or I will be mad at you ..!". My mother threatened.
I could not disobey my mother. I stood up, and wiped my tears with the back of my hand. And opened the door. As soon as I opened the door, my mother stormed in angrily with her eyes blazing in fury. Without warning, my mother slapped me on my face.
"How dare you disrespect the AlphaKing in such a manner.?!". Her angered voice followed.
The shock of the blow left me stunned, and my hands instinctively went to my cheek. My mother had never hit me before then, and that made me realize how frustrated she must have been.
"You need to apologize to Lucas immediately. And the AlphaKing too..!". My mother's words were sharp. Each word was like a dagger driven into my heart.
"Why should I apologize, mother ?!". I said. My voice was like a whisper, and it was laced with tears.
The pain I felt was not just physical, it was a very deep emotional wound.
"Lucas has no right to assume he can control my life. And ., the guests too. They insulted our family, mother. They insulted my father and you expected me to keep quiet!". The tears were flowing freely now. And this time, it was tears of defiance. I cannot stand and watch those people humiliate my family.
"Do you have any idea what you have done? You have just embarrassed the entire royal family in front of our guests..! What happened to the endurance I taught you, Naomi .?!". My mother's expression faltered for a moment, and a flicker of pain crossed her features. She felt disappointed, but I was more disappointed.
"They killed my father! They took away our portion! Now they want to control my life! Mother, how much more do we have to endure. ?!". My voice was filled with anger, malice, and disbelief.
I expected my mother to understand all of this, she should know how much that would make me feel. Before my mother could respond to my words, a knock came at the door. And a warrior servant stood there with a grim expression.
"The AlphaKing has instructed that Naomi be brought before him immediately ".
The urgency in the warrior's voice sent a chill down my spine. And my mother too, her face went pale immediately. She could tell that the situation was dire. I had stepped on the lion's tail, and the repercussions would be severe. I hesitated, there was tension in the room. I looked at my mother and saw the plea in her eyes.
"Naomi, please. Do as said, and make things right .". She whispered.
I took a deep breath to calm my nerves down and reluctantly followed the warrior servant out.
I followed the warrior out of my room with my heart pounding in a mixture of fear and determination. The palace corridor suddenly felt longer to me as we matched on, with each step echoing my resolve. I have endured the royal family's treatment for ten years already, now I am ready to face anything.
As we arrived at the palace's grand conference room my breath was caught in my throat. I had expected a private confrontation with the AlphaKing, perhaps with Lucas too, and a few other members of the royal family. Instead, I met the room filled with the entire pack, and their eyes were all fixed on me. The Beta, a man who had always harbored a dislike for me sat looking at me sternly. The elders too, the decision-makers of the pack. They were all present. Lucas sat beside the Beta, with his face reflecting his cold nature.
"Step forward, daughter of Sapphire..". The Beta's voice cut through the silence.
I took a deep breath and stepped forward. And with my eyes, I scanned the room. I spotted my mother, slipping in through another entrance. And sitting beside the Alpha's other wife, Luna Rachel.
"Naomi..". The Beta continued. "You came to this palace as a captive. A spoil of war. And by our customs, you should have been a slave. But the AlphaKing spared you and raised you as one of his own. It is time for you to fulfill your duty. Which is, to become the wife of the chief warrior leader...Lucas.".
The Beta recounted how the AlphaKing had found my mother fair to behold and captivated by her beauty, he made her his wife. And how the AlphaKing had agreed to my mother's plea to let me live as one of the royal daughters with the condition that I will marry Lucas when I turn 18. Hearing the Beta's words made my stomach drop. I felt sick as that revelation hit me hard. I glanced at my mother, wanting her to tell me it wasn't true. But she avoided my gaze and looked down in what looked like shame. Seeing my mother's reaction, frustration and rebellion surged within me. I was no longer listening to the Beta's words. I wasn't hearing him anymore. How could my mother let these men decide my fate at such a tender age?
"I will not marry Lucas..". I heard myself say. My voice was firm and defiant. The room suddenly fell silent as the weight of my words hung in the air.
I could feel it on the faces of everyone presence. And one of the elders spat out.
"You have no choice, daughter of Sapphire. You will be excommunicated from among us if you refuse..!".
But I didn't flinch. My resolve remained hardened.
"I would rather be excommunicated than marry Lucas ..". I retorted.
The hall erupted into chaos. The pack members shouted and argued. The elders too, gasped and were shocked at my defiance. And they all chimed in with their voices a chorus of condemnation.
"You are a weakling, Naomi..._.
"You cannot transform into a werewolf. You cannot even defend our pack in any way, against our enemies..".
"Only the strong, like Lucas can marry you. And can protect you..!".
The elders continued to berate me, calling me names and reminding me of my inability to transform. But I stood my ground, unmoved by their words. With a teary face, I turned to look at my mother. Her eyes pleaded with me, begging me to reconsider. I could see how desperate my mother was, but I wasn't going to remain loyal anymore. I have had enough. I would rather face exile than be bound with Lucas.
When the alpha finally declared me excommunicated, I felt a strange sense of relief. Hot tears rushed to my eyes. They were tears of relief. My mother's eyes were pleading for me to stay but my mind was already made up to leave afterall.
