Diablo
“Wren.” She was pushing at his chest and somehow that just made angrier. Why was the trying to get him out of harms way? Hadn’t it been the dragons that had kept her locked up all these years? Hadn’t they let her animal be taken when they were meant to be the protectors of shifters world wide?
And yet here she was, trying to get him to safety.
She was even more messed up than I had originally thought. And no amount of make overs could hide that amount of damage.
She pushed again and the big man took a willing step back, her hand lingering in his chest. A growl tumbled from me and Wrens eyes snapped up to me. Even in the darkness I could see the question there.
But it wasn’t like I could answer him. I had no idea why I growled either. Maybe because I didn’t much like him or any other dragonsZ and I liked them less in my territory.
“Down kitty cat.”
“Scr….”
“What’s going on?” For a second light and laughter spilled out of the bar. Sarah stood there, hands on her hips and just stared.
“Oh.” Her eyes darted from me to Gabrielle where her hand still rested on the dragons chest. “Ohhhh.” She repeated. Her eyes finally falling on me. “Are you ok?”
“Hes fine.” Wren spoke softly. ”I didn’t hurt him , although he deserves it for punching me in the face when I am here to help.”
I growled again. What a total asshole.
“I hope your hands broken kitty cat.” He mocked with a chuckle and my growl grew louder. Filling the small alleyway and echoing off the stone walls.
“Call me that again…”
“Oh for gods sake stop it both of you.” Gabrielle’s voice rose. And I blinked at her in surprise. I had never really seen her angry before.
Maybe she wasn’t so much a little mouse after all.
“You are both acting oversized children.” Her eyes flashed in my direction and for the first time since she had come to live with us a year ago there was fire in their depths. “Especially you.”
The hatred in her voice took me by surprise? I was acting like a child? The person who had been protecting her and putting up with her whiny moody ass for the last year? Me who was only protecting my people , her being one of them.
“Your out.” My voice was steely. I watched as the shock flickered across her face. Shock and something else. Fear?
She was scared of me?
Shit, I was a lot of things but I didn’t go around frightening women.
“Diablo stop being such an ass.” My sister in true sarah style punched my shoulder, striding forward. “Hi I’m Sarah. And your Wren, right?” She held out her hand and behind me Bat growled low and loud as he watched them shake hands.
I shot him a look. He was acting like a jealous mate.
Just another problem. But one for another day.
“I’ve heard a lot about you,” Sarah was gushing and I fought the urge to roll my eyes. My sister ever the flirt. “You’re the black dragon right? What can we do for you?”
“There’s a dragon in your territory.”
“Yeah we are looking at him.” Bat whispered , his eyes glowing as he forced the need to shift back down.
“Not me… a… she’s a opal dragon.”
“There are no opal dragons.” I spat the words out. “You think we are going to fall for this? If your boss.” I stressed the word boss knowing it would infuriate him. “Wants to petition for you to be in my territory he can come and ask himself.”
“That’s fine.”
“If that’s all then I have things to get on with.” I couldn’t help the anger in my voice as I turned to Gabby. “I’m sure you have packing to do as well. I would like you out of the club house by tomorrow evening.”
“Don’t be such a dick.” Sarah stood not teo foot away, hands on her hips as she glared at me. But I wasn’t really looking at her.
“Yes alpha.” Gabrielle didn’t even raise her head . It was Wren who tilted her chin up. “You don’t bow to him Gabby. Not ever. I will help you get on your feet. It’s what you deserve after everything you have been through.”
Why did I hate him talking to her like that? Why did the sight of his fingers on her chin make me want to shift , ready to bite and tear into him?
“It’s ok. She’s going to stay with me.” Again my sister shot daggers at me. “I’ll keep her safe.”
“What is going on with you and Gabrielle?” As usual Bats no nonsense approach left took me by surprise.
Everyone else had left and it was just the me, Bat and Jett left in the bar. Sarah had taken Gabby home an hour ago so she could pack up her meagre belongings and be gone by the time I got back.
It was what I had wanted.
So why did I feel so bad about the whole thing?
“What do you mean?” I studied him over the rim of my bottle, before taking a long pull of the cold beer. “I asked her to leave.”
For a second he just stared at me. “That’s not what I meant and you know it.” He finally said. “Back there in the alley. When the big dude Wren touched her… Diablo you were acting like a jealous mate.”
Even the words gave me a headache. I had never heard anything so absurd in my entire life. It had nothing to do with being attracted to Gabrielle at all. Because I wasn’t.
“That was about me protecting my people. As your chosen Alpha that’s kind of my job.”
“You’re full of crap.”
The anger that had been bubbling up since the damned dragon bubbled to the surface and my fist slammed down into the table. Sending a bottle flying, spilling liquid over my hand. “And you would know , wouldn’t you Bat?”
Bat didn’t even flinch as we stared across the table at each other.
“Should we talk about Sarah?” I c****d my head to the side. But I already knew the answer. Sarah was out of bounds and Bat would never cross that line.
He might want to.
But he wouldn’t.
“Exactly. But we have more important things to discuss than which women make our c***s hard.” Too late I realised what I had said. I back peddled fast but I knew he had heard , just like I knew he would remember “Not that Gabrielle…” I stuttered and cursed myself. I was Diablo , president of the Sabers MC didn’t stutter. He didn’t second guess himself over a woman he wasn’t even attracted to.
I had done the right thing when I asked her to leave. I should have done it sooner. Gabrielle was a distraction I didn’t need.
His chuckle was knowing. “Of course not.”
