Chapter 6

Rain battered violently against the windows surrounding the private lounge while Aurelia glittered below like a city built entirely from temptation. Selene stood near the glass wall sipping whiskey slowly while Noctis watched her from across the room. The tension between them had changed. Earlier it had been attraction. Now it felt heavier. Closer. Dangerous in quieter ways. "You keep staring at me," she murmured without looking at him. "And you keep noticing." "That sounded arrogant." "It was meant to." A laugh escaped her softly. God. Even that sound distracted him now. Annoying. Noctis loosened the cufflinks around his wrists slowly while watching the city lights reflect across her bare shoulders. She looked beautiful in darkness. Not delicate-beautiful. Ruined beautiful. The kind that made men want things they could not keep. Selene finally turned toward him fully. "You know what your problem is?" "I suspect you're about to tell me." "You act like you're above everyone else." "I am above most people." "There it is." A smirk tugged at her mouth. Noctis moved closer slowly. Too close now. The air between them shifted immediately. Electric. Selene hated how easily her body reacted to him. The man barely touched her and suddenly breathing became difficult. "You should stop looking at me like that," she murmured. "Like what?" "Like you're trying to figure me out." Noctis' gaze lingered on her mouth briefly. "Maybe I am." "That sounds unhealthy." "So do most interesting things." That shut her up. Dangerous man. Before Selene could recover, his fingers brushed lightly against her jaw. Gentle. Unexpectedly gentle. The touch sent heat crawling instantly down her spine. Noctis noticed. Of course he noticed. His thumb slid slowly beneath her chin before tilting her face upward slightly. "You hide loneliness behind sarcasm," he said quietly. Selene's breath caught faintly. Too accurate. She immediately covered discomfort with mockery. "And you hide trauma behind expensive suits." A low laugh escaped him. Then suddenly- he kissed her. Harder this time. Not careful. Not hesitant. Selene grabbed his shirt instantly as he pushed her backward against the glass wall overlooking the storm-lit city. Thunder cracked overhead. The kiss deepened. Hungry. Possessive. Like two people trying very hard not to feel something dangerous. Noctis' hands slid along her waist while Selene pulled him closer roughly enough to wrinkle his expensive shirt. God. There was something addictive about him. Something dark. The kind of attraction that ruined people slowly. His mouth moved against her throat next, warm enough to make her shiver violently. "You're trouble," she breathed. "I've been called worse." "That explains a lot." He smiled against her skin. Then kissed her again. The city disappeared around them afterward. Rain. Music. Thoughts. All gone. Only heat remained. Hands. Breath. The violent chemistry crackling between them. Selene lost herself in it far more than she intended to. And somehow that terrified her more than the man himself. - Downstairs, the nightclub pulsed endlessly beneath crimson lights and deafening music while bodies moved through smoke and alcohol like sinners worshipping at a cathedral. Casiel entered Elysium silently. The moment he stepped inside, his senses sharpened painfully. Human emotions crashed into him from every direction. Desire. Lust. Greed. Loneliness. Sin lived openly here. A bartender approached quickly. "What can I get you?" Casiel glanced briefly toward the glowing bottles lining the shelves. "I do not drink poison." The bartender blinked. "...Right." Casiel walked away before the confused man could answer. The nightclub felt overwhelming. Too loud. Too warm. Too human. Yet beneath the corruption- he sensed something else here. Something stronger. The golden book hidden beneath his coat had led him directly to this place. To her. His gaze swept carefully across the crowded nightclub searching for Selene Vale. Nothing. Only strangers drowning themselves in pleasure. Then he noticed two women seated near the lower lounge laughing over drinks. Mina and Jade. Casiel recognized them from the golden book's visions. Which meant Selene had to be nearby. But where? Meanwhile upstairs, Selene adjusted the strap of her dress slowly while Noctis buttoned his black shirt near the window. The atmosphere between them had shifted again. Quieter now. More intimate. Dangerous in a different way. Selene leaned back against the couch lazily. "You know," she murmured, "for someone terrifying, you're surprisingly decent at kissing." Noctis glanced toward her calmly. "Only surprisingly?" "Don't get cocky." A faint smirk touched his mouth. Silence settled briefly. Then- "Have we met before?" The question escaped her unexpectedly. Noctis paused slightly. Selene frowned immediately at herself. Weird question. Still- something about him kept feeling strangely familiar. Not recognizable. Just... familiar. Noctis studied her carefully. "No." Selene snorted softly. "Unless you slept with me before and I forgot." That almost made him laugh. Almost. "And do you sleep with everyone you meet?" There was no judgment in his voice. Only curiosity. Selene stood slowly before slipping on her heels. "As long as they have money," she answered lightly. "I am a prostitute after all." The word lingered between them. Sharp. Ugly. Noctis' expression darkened slightly. Not disgust. Something stranger. "You say that like you want it to hurt people." Selene smiled coldly. "Usually does." Then she grabbed her purse from the couch. Noctis watched her quietly. "You're dangerous," he said finally. Selene looked over her shoulder. Smirked. "I'll take that as a compliment." Then she turned gracefully on her heels and walked ahead of him toward the staircase. And annoyingly- Noctis found himself staring. Again. Downstairs, Casiel stood near the center of the nightclub scanning the upper balconies one final time. Then suddenly- movement caught his attention. A woman descended the staircase slowly beneath gold lights. Long black hair spilling over bare shoulders. Dark dress. Radiant smile. Beautiful. Casiel stared instinctively. Not with desire. Something quieter. Something unsettling. So this was Selene Vale. He understood immediately why men followed her despite knowing exactly what she was. There was life inside her. Messy. Wild. Human life. And somehow- she looked brighter than everyone else in the room. Then suddenly- a heavy silence moved through the nightclub. Casiel felt it instantly. His attention snapped upward. Another figure descended the staircase behind her. Black suit. Dark eyes. Controlled violence hidden beneath elegance. And the moment Casiel saw him- everything inside him went still. Noctis stopped walking too. The shift in the air hit him immediately. Predator. Ancient. Not human. Their eyes locked across the crowded nightclub. And instantly- they recognized each other for exactly what they were. Angel. Not memory. Instinct. Pure celestial instinct. The atmosphere darkened violently. Music still played. Humans still laughed. Lights still flashed. But beneath it all- two immortal beings stared at one another with immediate hatred burning through their veins for reasons neither fully understood. Casiel's jaw tightened first. Noctis' golden eyes darkened instantly. Neither spoke. Neither moved. Yet the nightclub suddenly felt one heartbeat away from violence.
