CHAPTER 1
THE BROKEN BRIDE
“You are overreacting. Every man cheats. Why are you getting worked up over something trivial?”
“Something trivial?” Elena scoffed. “You are nothing but a dog” “Judge, I’m done with this marriage. I can’t keep living with a man who doesn’t know my worth. All he thinks about is women, alcohol, and s*x. I tried my best to give him everything, but my everything was never enough. I want out. I can’t cope with this anymore.”
Elena had been tolerating from the start. She married Nathan because she loved him deeply. Nathan never loved her, but she assumed that if they got married, they would build their love and slowly, he would fall for her.
Elena is a young and elegant woman in her early twenties, pretty and loving. Unfortunately, Nathan never accepted her. All he did was sleep with women in the name of work, come home drunk, mess up everywhere, and leave Elena to clean up.
It wasn’t a marriage! It was torture.
She kept holding on, thinking that one day he would accept her. Unfortunately, that day never came.
“Judge,” Nathan started, “don’t listen to her nonsense. We are very much in love and”
“In love?” Elena cut him off and scoffed. “Is that what you call love? We have been married for four years, and we have no kids. He comes home drunk. Whenever he isn’t drunk and I want us to be intimate, it’s always work or he’s tired. He comes home with different lipstick marks on his shirt, hickeys, and so on. He never eats at home. It’s either he’s full or he doesn’t have an appetite.” She turned to him. “Is that what you call love? Huh?”
“Judge…”
“That’s enough,” Judge Jane cut him off. “Mr. Cole, everything she said is it true?”
“Um… um… Judge, listen…”
“Answer the question. Is it true?”
“Yes, ma’am.”
The judge stared at him for a while,as if studying him,she took a deep breath before her next words.Mrs Cole, your divorce can’t be finalized immediately. You have to stay together for three months. If nothing sparks between you two within that time, then your divorce can be finalized.”
“But, Judge, it’s not compulsory.”
“I know, but I refuse to believe that within those four years nothing happened.”
“I don’t want to spend another minute with this scoundrel.”
“Mrs Cole, please calm down. That will be all for now.”
“Court! Rise.”
“I can’t believe this. Why can’t we just end it here?” Elena screamed, frustrated and angry. She couldn’t believe her ears. She thought she was finally done with him, but it seemed fate had other plans.
Fate, my foot, she thought. Judge! Judge! Hear me out. We are not in love. I don’t want him. Just finalize it and we can go our separate ways, Judge!” Elena shouted. “You don’t know what it’s like. It’s hell. We have been married for four years. We don’t have kids. Nothing. Practically, we have been neighbors for four years. He doesn’t love me. He goes to work early and comes back really late. I don't want it again. I’m human too.”
“Argh! Stop yelling!” Nathan finally spoke.
“What’s it to you?” Elena snapped.
“You are lucky we are in court. Else, I would have snapped your neck,” Nathan whispered angrily.
Elena pointed, “You are nothing but an animal. I hate you. I hate you.” She kept shouting, loud enough for the whole room to hear.
Elena! Don’t push your luck. Everything is finalized, let's go home.
“There’s no way I’m going back there with you.”
“ He stared at her for a while,Suit yourself, then.”
Nathan turned, his hands tucked in his pockets, and left.
“Why?” Elena cried.Tears rolled down her cheeks as she stood there, miserable.
Memories of how Nathan never showed her affection before they got married flashed through her mind. She remembered that she had forced the relationship; he didn’t like her. The tears kept flowing. She cried for a while before coming to her senses.
Elena stormed out of the courtroom. She couldn’t help thinking about the judge’s words. She didn’t have children yet, so she thought that after the divorce, she would make money and live the way she wanted to. She had been a full-time housewife with no income. She had quit her job and married Nathan because he was wealthy, so she thought taking care of her wouldn’t be a problem.
“Gosh! I have been so stupid. What was I thinking?”
As she lamented, her eyes drifted to her side, and she saw a well-built man staring at her. Elena looked away, not thinking much about it. She had a lot going on so she didn't pay attention to her surroundings. Elena’s thoughts were disrupted by a phone call.
“Hello!”
It was silent for a while.
“Who’s this?” Elena broke the silence.
“If you want to know why your husband betrayed you, don’t go home.”
“Huh? What’s this?” She checked her phone screen to see the number. “Is this a scam or what?”
“Who are you? Huh? Speak up.
“Why are you silent? What do you mean by that?”
“Look behind you.”
The man’s voice sent chills down her spine.
Elena slowly turned around.
“I have seen you somewhere, but where?” she thought.
The man looked calm, yet there was a dark aura about him that Elena couldn’t quite explain.
“Who are you?” Elena asked again.
“Don’t you think you are asking the wrong question?”
“What are you?”
He stared at her with no expression.
“What do you know?”
“What do you want?”
“Who sent you?”
“Who are you?”
“Answer me!” Elena raised her voice.
Elena had always been calm and reserved, but she was already losing her mind. She was no longer thinking straight. The judge’s words had shattered her completely. She kept thinking about how she would continue living with Nathan for the next three months. All she wanted was freedom, but it seemed she had walked back into the cage she had just escaped from.
“Are you mute?” Elena asked, now irritated.
The man finally spoke.
“Your three months of freedom are about to be the most dangerous months of your life.”
