Chapter 1
The red light of the blood moon washed over the pack grounds, casting everything in a heavy, crimson glow. It was supposed to be the most beautiful night of my life.
Hundreds of pack members stood in a massive semicircle around the sacred ceremonial dais, their faces illuminated by the eerie lunar light and the roaring bonfires. Tonight was my marking ceremony. Tonight, I was finally supposed to become the Luna of the Crimson Lake Pack.
Standing at the center of the dais, my heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. I looked at Caleb, our Alpha, and the man destined to be my mate. He stood tall and imposing, his dark hair catching the red highlights of the moon. He looked every bit the powerful leader he was born to be, but his eyes weren't on me. They were scanning the crowd, his posture tense.
Elder Thomas stepped forward, his ancient voice echoing through the silent, expectant clearing.
"The blood moon reaches its peak. Alpha Caleb, take your place. Seal the bond, and mark your Luna."
A collective breath was held. This was the moment. I stepped closer to Caleb, tilting my head slightly to expose the sensitive crook of my neck where his fangs would pierce my skin, permanently binding our souls.
But nothing happened.
Caleb didn't move. He stood there, frozen, his jaw clenched tightly. Five seconds passed. Then ten. The silence stretched, turning from reverent to suffocating.
I peeked up through my lashes, my heart sinking. "Caleb?" I whispered, low enough so only his alpha hearing could catch it. "Caleb, everyone is waiting."
He didn't look at me. He just stared over the heads of our pack members, his nostrils flaring as if catching a scent.
A murmur rippled through the crowd. The silence broke into a hundred hushed whispers that felt like needles stabbing into my skin.
"Why is he hesitating?"
"Is he rejecting her?"
"Maybe she isn't fit to be Luna..."
The humiliation burned hotter than the bonfires. I tried to keep my chin up, to maintain the dignity required of an Alpha’s mate, but my hands were trembling.
Before the gossip could turn into a roar, the heavy wooden gates of the pack grounds burst open. Two border guards sprinted into the clearing, their chests heaving, clothes torn and stained with dirt. The crowd parted instantly, a wave of panic replacing the curiosity.
"Alpha!" one of the guards gasped, collapsing to one knee before the dais. "The perimeter was breached! It’s Eliana—she’s been attacked by rogues!"
The air in Caleb’s lungs seemed to leave him in a sharp hiss. The distant, distracted look in his eyes vanished, replaced by a sudden, terrifying intensity.
He took a violent step forward, completely turning his back on me. "What do you mean? Where was she?"
"She... she went out past the eastern border, Alpha," the guard panted, wiping sweat and blood from his forehead. "She said she wanted to find the midnight lily. She wanted to get it as a gift for the future Luna’s ceremony. The rogues ambushed her."
The moment the words left the guard’s mouth, the whispers shifted. A malicious current ran through the crowd, and suddenly, hundreds of eyes snapped back to me.
"Eliana went out there for her?"
"Why would Eliana go alone into rogue territory just for a gift?"
"Did Elena send her out there on purpose? She always hated how close Eliana was to the Alpha."
"Maybe she wanted Eliana gone..."
The accusations hung heavy in the air. I stared at the pack members, horrified. I hadn't asked Eliana for anything. I didn't even know she had left the pack grounds.
Eliana always had a way of making herself the center of attention, but to think I would orchestrate a rogue attack on my own wedding night? It was absurd. It was cruel.
"Where is she now?" Caleb’s voice was a low, dangerous growl that vibrated through the ground, forcing the gossiping wolves to instantly shut their mouths.
"She’s safe, Alpha," the second guard spoke up quickly. "We managed to drive the rogues back and get her out. She’s at the pack hospital right now. The doctors are treating her, but she’s badly shaken."
Caleb closed his eyes for a fraction of a second, a visible wave of relief washing over his broad shoulders. Then, without a single look in my direction, he stepped off the dais, intent on rushing to the hospital.
"Caleb, wait!"
The words left my mouth before I could stop them. I stepped down from the platform, my long ceremonial white dress dragging in the dirt. I reached out and caught his forearm.
His muscles were rigid, hard as stone.
He stopped, slowly turning his head to look at me. His eyes, usually a warm amber, were dark and swirling with an impatient storm.
"What, Elena?"
"You can't just leave," I said, my voice cracking despite my best efforts to keep it steady. I looked around at the hundreds of pack members watching our every move.
"Look around you. Everyone is here. The blood moon is at its peak. We have to finish the ceremony. You have to mark me first."
Caleb stared at me, his expression hardening into something cold and unrecognizable.
"Are you serious right now?" he asked, his voice dripping with disbelief. "Eliana was just hunted by rogues. She is bleeding in a hospital bed because she was trying to do something nice for you, and you’re standing here worried about a title?"
"It’s not just a title, Caleb! It’s our mate bond!" A tear finally slipped down my cheek, hot and stinging. "The guards said she is safe. The doctors are with her. You are the Alpha, yes, but right now, you are supposed to be my mate. If you leave this circle right now, without marking me, you disgrace me in front of the entire pack."
"Disgrace you?" Caleb scoffed, a bitter, mocking sound. He took a step closer, towering over me, his presence suffocating.
"Eliana almost died tonight, Elena. Stop being so damn selfish. She is your sister."
The word felt like a slap to my face. The burning injustice of it all flared to life deep within my chest, overpowering the heartbreak.
"She is not my sister," I said, my voice dropping into a harsh, fierce whisper.
Caleb’s eyes flashed with pure disdain. The look of utter disgust he gave me withered whatever hope I had left inside my soul.
"I can’t believe you’re letting your petty jealousy blind you to human life. She is family, whether you like it or not. And right now, she needs me."
He pulled his arm from my grip with enough force to make me stumble backward. He turned around, ready to walk away.
"Caleb!" I screamed, the desperation finally tearing through my throat. The entire clearing went dead silent. Even the wind seemed to stop.
"If you walk away right now—if you cross that perimeter and leave me standing here—you can forget about our mate bond. I will never accept you."
Caleb paused. For a single, fleeting second, I thought he would turn back. I thought the mate bond would pull him to me, that he would realize what he was throwing away.
Instead, he slowly turned his head, looking at me over his shoulder. His face was a mask of cold arrogance.
"You really are selfish," he said, his voice carrying clearly to every single ear in the clearing. "You don't care about anyone but yourself. Not even your sister's welfare. Threaten the bond all you want, Elena. I'm going to someone who actually needs me."
With that, he turned and shifted into his massive gray wolf mid-stride, tearing away into the darkness toward the pack hospital. His highest-ranking warriors immediately followed him, leaving a cloud of dust in their wake.
The silence that followed was deafening.
I stood completely frozen at the base of the dais. The whispers started up again, louder this time, filled with pity, mockery, and judgment. Elder Thomas looked at me with a sad, helpless sigh, slowly stepping away from the altar.
One by one, the pack members began to disperse, turning their backs on me, murmuring about the 'tragedy' of Eliana and the 'cruelty' of the failed Luna.
I didn't move. I couldn't.
I stood there alone in the empty clearing, the fires dying down to ash, bathed entirely in the mocking, bleeding crimson light of the blood moon.
