Chapter 24 - Moving Out

1507 Words
Chapter 24 I was amazed at the small amount of stuff I had at the apartment.  By the time we were finished going through the apartment I had 2 decent size boxes of decorations and nick knacks I had picked up since we moved here and 2 large suitcases for my clothes.  Jordan looks down at the small pile. “Seriously, is this all?” “Well, the apartment came furnished.  Most of my personal stuff is in DC.” “We are going to have to find a way to get that before your hubby throws it out the window.”  Jordan is surveying the apartment with her hands on her hips. “No problem there, I was pissed at him before we left DC and I moved a lot of it out to a storage unit before we left.  There is some stuff in the apartment I would like to have, but if I don’t get it, I am not too worried.” “Oh, right the secret files.  Can’t believe that was only a couple of months ago.  It feels like an eternity.” “Tell me about it.”  I reach down and grab one of the suitcases.  The security guys are waiting at the door to grab the boxes and walk us down to the door.  Peter had called a couple of minutes ago saying he was on his way.  It was now time to go. I stop at the door and pull out my phone.  “What do I do with this?” “Depends, do you want to keep it?” “There are a couple of pictures I would like to keep.  There is also my parents and my work colleagues phone numbers I need to keep.” “Then keep it.  We transfer the number to a new account later.” “But I am not sure if John is tracking me with it or not.  And I don’t want him to know where I have gone.” Jordan is staring at the phone in thought.  Finally, she smiles.  “There is a cell store right down the block.  We will go there next.  You can get a new account and phone.  You can even get a new number if you don’t want John to contact you.  They will transfer all the data from the phone to the new phone and then reset this one to the factory default system wiping all the data from the phone.” We head to the store and do exactly what Jordan suggest. I ultimately decide for a new number.  Once the phone is reset, I take it and ask the guy behind the counter is there a way to deliver this to my ex.  He smiles an understanding smile and say he will take care of it.  I jot down the apartment address and leave it with the guy. Jordan, Peter and I are crammed in the front of the small pickup Peter borrowed heading towards their house.  I am so grateful for them.  I don’t know what I would do if they were not there.  Towards the end I have become numb.  I should have known about transferring phones but my mind has decided it wants to stop working.  I know tomorrow I have to get up, go to work, explain the situation to my boss incase John shows up and start moving on with my life.  But tonight, I am going to be helpless and sad, maybe cry my eyes out and try to pretend none of this happen.  Too soon I will have to be an adult again and start making decision for me. The next morning, I get up and get dress on auto polit.  I meet Jordan in the kitchen, and she offers me breakfast.  I am not remotely hungry, so I decline.  “Are you sure?”  She asks.  “You need to eat something.  You hardly ate anything at dinner.” “I am sure.” She shakes her head and finishes getting the kids school lunches pulled together.  Last night she told me she would drive me into work.  I convince her to dropped me off at the nearest subway stop.  I don’t want to risk John seeing me with her and figuring out that Jordan and Peter helped me.  It would make Peter’s life miserable at work if John knew. I finally walk into my work building.  I barely set my stuff down at my station when I get a call from my supervisor asking to see me in his office.   I groan and walk to his office.  “I got an interesting phone call late last night.”  Bob directs me to the chair in front of his desk and closes the door behind me.  He circles his desk and sits down.  He pushes play on his answering machine. I hear John voice raging on the other end.  He is blaming the company for me leaving and demanding that they fire me or else.  It goes on for a couple more minutes and then it beeps over.  John had exceeded the time limit for messages.  Bob looks up at me and states, “There are about 4 more calls like this.” I am so ashamed, “I am so sorry.”  I want to cry.  I put my head down in my hands.  Finally, I look up and tell Bob, “I left my husband last night.” Bob nods and folds his hand in front of him.  “I figured as much; can I ask why?” I shift in my seat and just sigh.  “He never really treated me well.   Then I found out his is sleeping with someone else.” “Oh,” Bob says.  “Well then good for you.  No reason to stay with someone who treats you poorly” “Am I fired?” I ask suddenly. Bob smile at me and shakes his head no.  “You are not fired.  But I need to ask; do you have someplace safe to stay?  He sounded very unstable on the phone, and I want to make sure you are not in danger.” “My friend Jordan is letting me stay at her house.” I wave my hand towards the machine. “You are not mad about this?” “Of course not.  You are not the first employee that has had their marriage end.  I doubt you will be the last.  Angry people lash out.”  He looks at the machine and purses his lips, “Some more than others.  I just want to make sure you are okay and see if you need anything.” “What if he comes here?” “I already told the security guards that he is not allowed inside the building.  If you have a recent picture of him, I will send it down to them to keep an eye for him.  Also, I do not want you leaving the building without an escort.  If I have too, I will drive you home myself.” I feel the tears threaten to fall.  I was not expecting this.  He was being so nice and supportive. “I can’t ask you to do that.  I’ll figure out who else goes to the same subway stop as me and make sure my friend meets me on the other side.” “It’s not a problem.  I am sure we have someone that lives in the same area as your friend.  I would much rather someone drove you home.  You husband can’t access the parking garage, so it will be secure.” I can tell he is not going to let me leave this office until I agree. “Okay, Thank you.” He waves me off, “Ok, back to work with you.”  He looks down to his paperwork as I get up and start to leave his office. “Amelia, I would suggest you order lunch in for the time being.” I nod and leave his office.  I walk back to my station and sit down and just stare at the computer screen.  I go to pick up my office phone to call Jordan and remember, John can’t access my phone anymore.  I am on my own plan.  I grab the phone and recall Bob wanted a current photo of John.  I scroll through my phone and find one of the few pictures I have of him facing forward.  I plug the phone into my computer and transfer the photo.  I then email it off to Bob.  A few seconds later I get a thumbs up emoji.  I smile and call Jordan and tell her I am safe at work and about what happened.  She tells me she’ll pick me up.  I finally agree and decide to ask if security will let her into the parking garage.  Bob is right it is secure, and John will not see whose car I get into that way.
