Chapter 21

William’s P.O.V.

Fuck she’s magic.  I set my phone down on the counter and stare at it.  I always knew that John was up to something.  That little prick was too much of an i***t to be able to raise to this high of office without some ‘special’ help.  I started to try to hang out with him on trips home in hopes to read something in him, but I always got nothing. 

I am not magic, well not completely.  If the 25% gene rule applies, I am probably 10%.  I can read minds sort of.  I cannot read complete thoughts but if people let their guard downs, I can get quite a lot of information out of them.  Add some booze or a stressful event and nothing is off limits.  This ‘gift’, that the magic people call it, has made me quite powerful.  The organization I work for wants to control the magic people, but the magic people know we exist and have been trying to get spies inside our ranks for years.  My skills to detect spies have made me invaluable and so I am actually quite high up in the power chain.

John on the other hand is a want-to-be.  He knows we exist; our fraternity has been funneling members and money our directions since the start, but nothing about John except for his father money has made the organization even remotely interested in recruiting him.    I have always been suspicious of him since college.  He was always too slick and always trying to get in with the powerful people.  Yet when I apply my gifts to him, he always has his guard up whenever he is talking about his career, so I knew something is up. 

When the organization decided to use John’s greed for their benefit I asked to be assigned to the case.  The reason why, I know he has some access to magic, and I want to find it and see if I can use it.  I never suspected his wife.  Then I met them for dinner, and I watched John grabbing her hand whenever he spoke to me.  When I didn’t respond well, he kept thinking “why isn’t this working”.  I realized he is channeling something through Amelia.  Her thoughts were relatively blank for the most part.  She was bored and annoyed with her husband and not paying any attention to us.  The only thought I read from her is Jessica. 

I know from the file I have on John that Jessica is the name of his mistress.  Somehow his wife has found out about her, and she is fuming.  That might explain why he can’t channel her.  She is pissed at him and blocking him.  Whether she knows she is magic or not I am not sure.  She has done nothing in her life to expose herself and no one is that good to never give any signs of special abilities, unless they don’t know about it.  Her parents are normal and there have been no signs she can do anything.  The only evidence she has any abilities is her husband’s fame. 

Fame that is starting to crumble and no amount of magic from his wife will save it.  John started this decline thinking he was better than everyone else and people in the government want him gone, the sooner the better.  That is why he got assigned to Border City.  But this assignment works for the organization as well.  The magic counterpart to us is getting close and we need to get them off our scent.  The plan was easy, give John an idea that we could harness the magic from the magic people without having to deal with the people.  Then give him just enough rope to hang himself.  If he finds something out, we can use, great, if not he falls and it takes a lot of the suspicion away from us.

The people will blame the government for this and why not.  John works for the government.  We have already had our people who are in the government distance themselves from any ideas of using magic people.  They have also started setting up people who are against us to take the fall when John is discovered.  This will allow us more bodies in the government to make our goals easier to achieve.

I am still staring at the phone willing Amelia to text me back.  It was risky texting her, but I need an in with this woman.  I am hoping when she finds out more information on Jessica, she will call me.  I know that John has distanced her from her family and friends so she will have no one to turn too.  I wonder if I can help her discovery along any.  I don’t want to be associated with it.  If she texts back, I can leave a few pointed comments and direct her to the truth but for now I have to wait.

I am actually excited about this prospect.  No one knows she has gifts and if John quick rise to congress is any evidence to the strength of her abilities, I can use that.  If she knows about her powers, then she should be willing to join forces with me to protect herself, but if she doesn’t, I can do the same thing John is doing and channel her power.  The only difference I will treat her better.  John doesn’t like magic, so he treats her like a thing, a tool, instead of a woman.  I will treat her like the beautiful woman she is, and she will never want for anything and then I will have control of her gifts.
