CHAPTER 4

Loki was unusually punctual and his wolf mocked him for that. “You’re becoming a pain in the neck.” “You dumbass, I’m not just in your neck, I’m in your whole body. Think!” He waited for about twenty minutes before the lady arrived. It was a little after midday and the sun’s fervor was mild. After waiting so long, Loki concluded that he didn’t like the taste of his own medicine. Coffee with the lady, whose name he later found out to be Gwen, was divine. By the end of their meeting, Loki was enthusiastic about another meeting with her and he asked if she would be free the next day for dinner. She was. Everything was going smoothly. In one day, his life had changed from its usual boring schedule to a thrilling one. By the end of the day, he was in love with Gwen. She emanated a radiant energy that flowed through him, she was so easy to converse with, her aura was appealing and today, he had gotten the chance to see the full beauty of her figure. The red gown she had worn clung perfectly to her body, outlining her lush figure. The moment he got home, his wolf, Loki, said, “Whatever feelings you have for her, kill it now.” Loki knew it was stupid to ask, for the reason was so obvious, but he asked anyway, “Why?” “Because it can’t work.” “Why?” “Because…she’s not a werewolf. She doesn’t belong to any pack, she is a normal human being. Not a werewolf, not even a Lycan. It can’t work.” It was surprising that his wolf had been patient in answering his questions. Loki knew very well why he couldn’t fall in love or even be with Gwen. The rules of the pack said, if a member of the Shadow Pack must mate, it must be with a werewolf from within the pack or from another pack, never a normal human, or a vampire or any other creature. “But listen here, Loki, if I could mark her, wouldn’t that make her my-” “You can’t mark a normal human being! What’s gotten into you? She has to be from a pack, Loki. Stop acting like you do not know this.” The conditions were if a member of the pack became adamant and decided to mate with a non-werewolf, he or she would be forced to leave the pack. But Loki had never considered that the pack was his home. He wouldn’t throw it away for some woman. “My bad, I was stupid for even considering it. It’s just an initial feeling of admiration for her, it will fade away.” But the next day, when he met with Gwen for dinner, he found himself more drawn to her than he had ever been to anyone else. Each time she looked and smiled at him, his heart beat increased, she had an easy way with him, and he with her. “My word! You’re incredible, Gwen, I have to confess.” She flashed a charming smile that sent shivers up his spine at his words. “I’d like to do this every day. Are you free tomorrow?” “No Cherie, sadly, I’m not. I’m going away for a few days.” Loki’s heart shattered instantly and his world seemed to be slipping away. He swallowed hard and a lump formed in his throat, then he managed to ask with a croaking voice, “Away? To where? Why?” “Work, silly. I have to work, I’m travelling to Manhattan and I do not know when I’ll be back. But why don’t you leave your number with me, Cherie, so I can give you a ring?” For the next thirteen days, Loki heard nothing from Gwen. He was jittery and the days away from her were shattering and felt like an eternity of torture. The night he picked up his phone, after receiving a call from an unknown number, when he heard Gwen's rich voice, he was filled with a lot of joy as it seemed like a missing piece of his life was just fit into its place. “I’m back in town, Cherie. How about we meet up tomorrow?” “No.” Loki replied, to her surprise. “Now, let’s meet now. Gwen.” His voice was hoarse. “Now?” her voice was startled. “Yes.” She knew everything behind the tone of his voice. “Alright.” She gave him the address. Ten minutes later, Loki hailed a cab up to Benson Street and alighted just in front of Gwen’s apartment block. He rushed up the stairs onto the second floor of the building. “Loki, be mindful of what you’re doing.” The warning from his wolf came, but he ignored it, he was a man solely driven by love, not just lust. Gwen opened the door and let him in. She was clad in a flimsy negligee that did little to cover her body. “I’ve missed you, Gwen. I want you.” “Let’s not talk, Loki. I want you as much as you want me.” The next moment, she was in his arms and his lips were on hers. Slowly, his arm circled her thin back and pulled at the fabric that held what she wore in place, it came off with ease and she also undressed him. They couldn’t let go of each other as they stumbled into her bedroom. “As it says, you cannot mate with a normal, non-werewolf lady and be a member of the Shadow pack. It is a written rule, one that cannot be dented or defiled.” Loki said wearily. Once Loki spoke those words, the girl's heart sank. She knew that she had fallen deeply in love with him, but she was just an ordinary human. She couldn't understand why the pack would care so much about her lineage. Despite her confusion, the girl knew she had to face reality. She gathered her courage and went to confront Loki about what he had said. As she approached him, he could sense the sadness in her eyes. "Loki, why does it matter so much to the pack that I'm not a werewolf?" she asked, hoping for an answer that would make sense to her. Loki took a deep breath before replying, "The Shadow Pack is a family, and we only mate with others in the pack. It's a tradition that has been passed down for generations. I know it's hard to understand, but it's how we've always done things." Days turned into weeks, and the girl struggled to come to terms with the situation. She tried to distance herself from Loki, but she found herself constantly thinking about him. She knew she couldn't force him to choose between her and his family, but she couldn't help wishing things were different.
