Chapter 9

Gabriella Today is the day. My very first job interview. I'm so excited and a little nervous. I hope goes well at least. There might be qualifying and experienced candidates but I won't let it deter me. This will serve as an interview experience if things don't go well. I had a professional get up. I've never worn such clothes before but I bought them for a day like this. More for when I get hired as a full-time employee. I had a gray pencil skirt on, a creme chiffon blouse, and a navy blazer. On my feet, I had black 4inch heels. A wristwatch simple necklace for simplicity. My long brunette hair was in a tight ponytail with a parting in the middle. Small studs on ears and minimum makeup just to bring life to my face. I was set and ready to go. When I got to the kitchen I was met with the most pleasant sight. a beautiful delicious breakfast laid out on the table. They were a variety of foods on the table. Seems like someone went all out. Diana was on her strap chair playing with her gummy toy. I went to her and kissed her. Mom came to view with a big smile on her face. " Are we having a feast or something? What's with the menu," I said referring to the food. She reached out to me and pulled me closer to her. " I wanted you to have a choice associated breakfast. Eat to your heart's content." I laughed at that and shook my head. " Mom. I'm not going to war. It's just an interview. With all this now, just imagine what you would do if I got the job, " I teased her and sat down. She joined me. " I'm just excited that you are starting something new. You wanted this and finally, the opportunity is here. May you prosper in this new journey. Know that even if today doesn't work out, it's not the end but the beginning of something new." I smiled at her genuine sentiment. " Alright. Let's dig in! " she exclaimed and started to dish out for me. I ate a bit of everything she made and it was delicious. Made with a mother's love. After the meal, I went to Diana and caressed her face sending her my love. Mom was busy clearing out the table and packing the leftovers in containers. She has taken a day off to stay at home with my gummy bear. " Be a good girl for grandma. okay?" She blabbered and I just chuckled. I wonder when she says is every mother's desire to hear her baby say " mama ". I can't wait for her to utter those simple innocent words. No matter what her first word is, I want to be present for all my baby's milestones. When she gets to crawl and her first steps. Now I'll have to send her away and be away from her for a couple of hours when I start work. Both of us will get used to it. " It's time to go dear. You don't want to be late. Make use of first impressions." I pulled myself together and gave Diana one last kiss." Yes, mother. I'll get going. Hopefully, with all your blessings and God willing I'll be selected for the shortlist. " She nodded and hugged me. " Good luck honey," she whispered. I give myself a once over on the mirror to check if anything is amiss. Seeing as everything is in the order I grab my purse and folder. " Alright. I'll be gone. See you later and be good to each ey, " I teased them and left. I started to feel really anxious and my legs were shaky. I stopped to take deep breaths and compose myself. Outside the weather was sunny. A tolerable sunny day with a bit of wind. After walking for a distance I hailed a cab. I couldn't possibly walk the whole way there. I'd arrive all sweaty and gross. " Topez Group of Companies." The driver nodded and I was comfortably on the back seat. My mind was in a daze. I looked at the people bristling about on the sidewalk. All with a purpose. Some in cooperating attires and some in the gym and casual get-ups. In a little while all that was forgotten. The cab reached the building that I came to. As soon as I stepped foot out of the cab I was in front of a tall building. I had to crane my neck to see its end but I was of no use. The sun hitting the glass shined in my eyes. I use my hand to shield my eyes. I jogged up the stairs and entered the building. So many people. Coming in and out, some mingling amongst each other. All wearing similar clothing. I scanned my surroundings and located the reception area. Yes. I'll go ask that lady receptionist for directions. When I got there, I got tense. She was a mean-looking lady. Her face was all caked up and her clothes were professional yet revealing a bit too much, especially on her chest area. Blonde. I've heard prejudices against blonde girls and I have a feeling she is one amongst those who arouse that thought. I got so engrossed in analyzing her she had to snap me out of it. " Hello ?" She waved her manicured hand in front of my face. I looked at her and she had a quizzical face. " Are you just going to stand there or are you here for something?" Her tone was rude but I decided to be the better person and not make a scene. " Hello, mam. I'm here for the interview. I'd li-, "She cut me off. " -Take the lift to the 40th floor and you'll receive further directions. " I didn't say anything further, I nodded and went towards the lift. Why do they even place unpleasant people to be the face that welcomes people? Maybe she's not rude to all, just to those she doesn't like. She doesn't even know me, why would she dislike me? I got in the lift and I was joined by other workers. It was silent and awkward but bearable. The lift was taking its time but more people were getting off on their designated floors. Soon I was left alone. Assuming that everyone that got off already works here. Finally, my stop at the 40th floor. I got off and there was another reception. Oh God! not again. Fingers crossed I hope she's friendly. I approached her and immediately she smiled. A warm welcoming smile. White pearl teeth. Her hair was in a low bun with a few strands loose on the side of her head. Good sign, not all are bad. " Hello, mam. How can I help you," she sweetly asked. If I get a chance to work here I'll definitely befriend. " Ah yes! I'm here for the interview." " Yes. Please take a left and you'll be in the corridor. You'll see some of the candidates waiting outside. Take a seat and join them. " " Thank you." I left the reception band followed her directions. When I got there I found ladies of different kinds. Some simple and neat others were so desperate in their attempt to look presentable. It seems as though they didn't trust in their capabilities and they were ready to use other means. I went over and joined the last person in line.
