CHAPTER TWO.
The man sitting right in front of me was the attorney general of the nation and he was equally the same man I had kinda bashed on my way to the interview. What I couldn't understand was the fact that the attorney general was so simple that he was driving his by himself earlier.
"Good morning sir, please are you the attorney general?"
I asked, very terrified, because the influence this young man had could stop me from ever getting a job in the whole of this country. I was terribly frightened and scared because I couldn't believe the simple life the man lived and I also couldn't predict my fate at all.
"I'm so sorry sir, I didn't mean to offend you. Please, I seriously need this job!"
I couldn't imagine what I had gotten myself into, talking down on my prospective boss earlier. "Phew! What have you done to yourself, Anna?" This exact question kept coming out of my mouth.
During this period in his office, I got a clearer view of the man.
"Who knows, he could probably be in his late twenties." My thoughts had suddenly drifted to his amazing and charming looks, he was fit to be the dream of any woman. He was tall, handsome, muscular and gentle.
"Your second offense is drooling at your boss just the first time I met him."
He further told me how he had the right to ask me to go home or better still deny me the job. I knew how possible it was, so I didn't pray for it to happen.
"I'm so sorry, I promise it won't ever repeat again sir."
"Stop all these Anna! I saw you from the camera and I asked my secretary to get you in. She had already told me how humble you were earlier and recommended that I pick you. I love how outspoken you're and I hope you'll deliver to this country exceptionally."
I was shocked by his words. The woman who brought me into the office was his secretary and she was probably disguised as the receptionist. I didn't know what else to say because I found it hard to believe what he had, especially because of the fact that I had an altercation with him earlier.
"What if I disqualify you right now?"
His question really caught me off guard. I couldn't even find my voice at that instant. The words to say to him had eluded me and I could only stare in utter confusion and fear of the unknown.
"I really need this job, sir, and I beg you not to deny me this opportunity, please sir. I'll do anything at all to prove how much this job means to me".
"You mean anything at all?". He asked me grinning.
"Yes sir, anything.." I replied confidently and soon, silence took over the room. I couldn't think of what he would want me to do to get the job.
The attorney general stared at me for some minutes before he asked me to go. I didn't know what to expect at all. Maybe he disqualified me. I wasn't ready to let this defeat define me, so, I stood up to leave.
He further explained to me that he meant to tell me that I should go and prepare to start work immediately because he had hired me. He loved how confident I was when I spoke to him earlier that morning.
I got an upfront payment, an official house and car as part of my federal government contract. I shouted like a baby because the joy I felt was immeasurable. I couldn't believe that my lifelong dream had come to pass.
I was instructed to begin tomorrow. I headed home just after I thanked the secretary who acted like a receptionist all along. I thanked her immensely for recommending me for the position and I immediately headed out of the office building.
It was very sunny outside and I also had network issues, so, I went over to a canteen within the premises, ordered some snacks and ate in excitement.
I could feel the weird looks of people inside the canteen but I didn't give a damn. Immediately I was down eating, I ordered an Uber online and in about twenty minutes, he arrived and I got in.
My journey back home was smooth coupled with the fact that the road was free and we didn't encounter any traffic jams like in the morning period. In Nigeria, the roads are always free towards the afternoon because most workers would have gone to work while students go to school.
Immediately I got into my apartment, the first thing I did was to run into the shower to get a cold bath. I also ordered champagne and barbecue from an online restaurant to celebrate my big win with myself.
My father never wanted me to leave the ghetto but I had to because all I ever dreamt of is to become a lady of influence. The ghetto wasn't really developed like the city, but it was serene. Although my dad is the ghetto lord, I still wanted to get my own identity because most of the inhabitants are illiterates. I'm happy I took the bold step of letting go of my family to achieve my goals.
I had really drifted so far away with my thoughts that I could not hear the door bell ring.
"Phew! I'm so sorry for keeping you waiting". I apologized to the delivery guy.
"It's nothing, ma'am, here's your order." He said and stretched my order towards me. I collected it and shut my door back. Since I relocated to the city, I've always been more of a less social person because I didn't have any friends at all.
My evening was going well as I celebrated my big win with myself. Since we were in the rainy season, the weather was already getting cloudy as it was very obvious that the rain could begin at any moment.
As it was a common incident that the rain could be heavy and cause flooding. From my apartment building, I could hear the sound of cars driving hastily in order to pick their wards, I could also hear shop owners locking up their stores and upmarks very fast.
It was very difficult to get a cab or order an Uber during this time because the price of transportation tripled at that instant. Drivers mostly use this medium to make extra money by tripling the price of transportation.
The calm and serene atmosphere of my estate was soon disrupted and shaken terribly. I could hear the sound of gunshots from just outside my apartment. I couldn't understand what was happening, so I just had to mutter silent words of prayer in fear of the unknown. I was sure of who the unknown gunmen came for or what their mission looked like.
"Oh my God, save me again this time."
I could only remember to mutter those words because I was already very scared and afraid of what could happen next. It is very common for us to experience things like this around my locality.
I jolted back to reality the moment I heard a banging sound coming from my door. Right before my presence, my door had been kicked open violently.
