Chapter 1: The Quiet Before the Storm ( Mia’s POV)
Mia Parker put her fingers on the floor-to-ceiling window of her office. The cold and hard surface felt harsh against her skin. The city below, forty-three floors down, was alive with taxis honking, people rushing to get where they needed to go, and the world spinning on as if everything were normal. But Mia’s life didn’t feel normal anymore. The skyline in front of her was sparkling and indifferent. She had fought for years to get to this point, sacrificing sleep and sanity to become one of Manhattan’s best corporate lawyers. The sleek lines and modern furniture in this office were meant to show that she had made it. That she had it all. But she didn’t. She had the job. The name. The top floor of the building with a view of Central Park. But the one thing she thought was solid , her marriage , had been falling apart for months, and she was too afraid to admit it. Mia turned away from the window and walked back to her desk, her heels clicking softly on the polished floor. As she sank into her leather chair, it creaked, and she felt tired all over. Another late night at work. Another night of waiting for Elijah to come home, only to be met with excuses and broken promises. She looked at the silver-framed picture of their wedding day on her desk. Elijah’s arm was around her waist, and they were both laughing at something the photographer had said. That moment was so clear in her mind. The way his eyes held hers like she was the only person in the world. What had changed? When did she become just another thing on his calendar, squeezed in between business dinners and board meetings? The familiar pain grew in her chest, dull and unending. Her phone buzzed against the mahogany surface, pulling her from her thoughts. A message from Elijah. “I’m sorry, I’m running late. I’ll be home soon.” Mia stared at the message, her jaw tightening. How many times had she read those same words? How many nights had she sat alone in their huge penthouse, waiting for a man who was always somewhere else? Her thumb hovered above the keyboard. She typed “Again?” but deleted it. She wrote another one that said “Don’t bother” and deleted that too. What was the point? He’d just come up with another excuse for why his work was more important than coming home to her. She put the phone down, but the bad taste in her mouth stayed. The office smelled like old coffee and the faint scent of his cologne from this morning when he came by to pick up a file. That memory didn’t even feel real anymore. He barely looked at her; he just kissed her cheek and then left in a hurry. Mia leaned back in her chair, closed her eyes, and took a deep breath. The air felt heavy, pushing down on her chest. It wasn’t supposed to be like this. Marriage wasn’t supposed to feel so lonely. Again, her phone buzzed. She opened her eyes, expecting another half-hearted apology from Elijah. But the name on the screen made her stomach drop. Avery Sinclair. Mia’s breath stopped. Her heart raced, and a cold feeling of fear crept up her spine. Avery Sinclair. The beautiful socialite with the perfect smile and a closet full of designer clothes. The woman who always seemed to be at the same events as Elijah. The one Mia had tried not to think too much about, even though a quiet jealousy had grown in her chest. Her finger hovered over the screen. Don’t open it. Just get rid of it. But she couldn’t resist. She needed to know something that had been ignored and silenced for too long. She tapped the message. “I’m sorry, Mia. I can’t keep this from you any longer. Elijah and I have been dating for months. He wanted to keep it a secret, but I can’t do that anymore. You have a right to know the truth.” The words were hard to read. The room seemed to tilt. Mia’s hands went numb, and her phone slipped a little out of her grip. She read the message again. And again. Like reading it over and over again might change what it said. Months. Not a mistake that happened once. Not a second of weakness. Her throat tightened, and a sharp, burning pain spread through her chest. She put a hand on her sternum, trying to calm her breathing, but the air wouldn’t come. The walls of the office seemed to close in, and the noise of the city below became deafening. She had known. Deep down, she knew something was wrong. The late nights. The distance. The way he looked at her as if she were a stranger. But knowing and seeing it in writing were not the same thing. The heat rushed to her face and then went away just as quickly, leaving her cold. She dug her nails into her palm, and the sharp pain brought her back to earth, keeping her from losing it completely. Don’t cry. Not here. Not now. But the tears came anyway, hot and without warning, making it hard for her to see. She angrily swiped at them, hating herself for being weak and caring so much about a man who clearly didn’t care about her. Once more, her phone buzzed. This time, it was Elijah. Mia’s breath caught. For a crazy, illogical second, she thought he might be calling to explain. To apologize. To say it was all a mistake. But when she opened the message, the words hit her like a slap. “Mia, I know you’re mad. I know I’ve messed everything up. But I really need you. I can’t do this without your help. Please stand in for me in the divorce. You’re the only person who can help me now.” The world seemed to go quiet. Mia read the message three times, and each time, it hurt more than the last. Represent him? After all the lies, betrayal, and months of feeling like she wasn’t good enough, he wanted her to fix this? To be his lawyer and fix their broken marriage like it was just another case? She tried to laugh, but it came out as a choked sob. Her chair scraped against the floor as she stood up quickly. She felt like her legs were going to give out, but she made herself move, walk, or do something other than sit there and let it all weigh her down. The lights of the city outside sparkled, making her feel guilty for how bright they were. She had given him everything , her time, her faithfulness, her affection , and this is what she got back. Mia’s eyes drifted to the pile of papers on the edge of her desk. Forms for divorce. She had printed them weeks ago, telling herself it was just in case. Just in case. Now, they seemed like they had to happen. She picked up the top page and skimmed the legalese she knew so well. Her hands shook. It would be so simple, fill in the blanks, put the papers in the file, walk away and let the ink dry. But even as she thought it, a part of her didn’t want to do it. Even though she was angry, heartbroken, and embarrassed, there was still a part of her that remembered who they used to be. A part that thought about whether there was anything left to save. Mia put the papers down, and her vision blurred again. She didn’t know what hurt more: the betrayal or the fact that she still wasn’t sure if she could let him go. The city kept moving outside. Mia’s world had already stopped inside.
