CHAPTER 1 MAE
MAE
The sunsets cast a warm glow on the road, and the day feels hectic as Mae sits in the back seat of the black Honda Jeep. Her mom, Mrs. Harper, drives while her 7-year-old sister, Imogen, occupies the front seat. Mrs. Harper smiles as she drives, using her rearview mirror and glancing at Mae, wondering what could be going through her mind. Mae has been an amazing child to her; at home, she helps her mom with the dishes, cooking, cleaning, and caring for her sister. Mrs.Harper is a doctor who has numerous patients to attend to at the hospital, and she comes back home at midnight or in the early hours of the morning.
As she drives them to a new city, due to the nature of her profession, she has been transferred to another city hospital. Moving to a new city isn't easy for Mae; she contemplates the challenges of adjusting to a new school and environment, pondering how life would be at Evermere. Mae is an introvert who spends most of her time indoors with zero friends and idolizes her alone time. She notices her mom staring at her as she puts down her phone for a few minutes, and she yells, "Mom, stop staring; it's okay; I'm good; I just want to get there quickly; can you drive faster?". Her mom giggled, smiling and patting Imogen's head while driving. Addressing her kids, she says, "Babies, this is going to be a new experience for us, a fresh start. Mae, make some friends here, okay, honey". Mae smiles and replies, "Yes, Mom."
One thing about the Harper family is that they are always happy, although Mae and Imogen have no idea of their father, and Mrs. Harper has no memory of the father of the kids. Unfortunately, Mr. Harper, before he died, was a werewolf who fell in love with a human, Mrs. Harper, and they had children. He was scared they were going to be just like him, so without waiting for them to grow up, he made her forget who he was and that their kids are werewolves. Everyone was quiet as they drove. Mae put on her AirPod Max and played music while she gazed out the car's window.
Finally, they arrived at Evermere City, passing the city's entrance with a Welcome to Evermere sign on the gate and owls sitting on the sign board. The city had this subtle look: a quiet, cold, and dark city, full of tall trees and shade. You could hear the rustling branches, the birds chirping, and the clicks and rattles of crows. As soon as they passed the entrance, Mae suddenly heard a long, sharp whistle sound in her head. She felt dizzy and groaned inside. She couldn't hear anything other than the sound; she could hear her mom and Imogen's heartbeat. She turned around, and suddenly the sound stopped. She questions herself, "What is that?" and becomes mute.
A few minutes later, they arrive at their new home after driving about 975 miles. Mae comes down from the car, looks around, and mumbles "It's a beautiful house" before helping her mom pack out their boxes from the boot of the car while Imogen runs to the door of the house with the house key and opens the door. Their new home is a four-bedroom duplex with an attic, a front and back balcony, and a big garage. Her little sister heads upstairs quickly and screams, "Mom, the first room is mine." Mrs. Harper laughs and says, "Sure, honey." Mae quietly goes upstairs and heads to her room. She unpacks her luggage and helps Imogen unpack. Mrs. Harper takes a tour of the house while Mae prepares dinner.
The whole family appears to fit in properly. Mrs. Harper, always busy with work, was already in the dining room with her laptop going through patients' files because she knew she was going to have a long day at work the following day. Mae served dinner and was ready to head straight to her room, feeling a bit anxious for her first day in her new school, when her mom held her hands and told her thanks for dinner. She went to her room, jumped on the soft bed, and breathed a sigh of relief. Then the sharp whistle sound recurred again, this time with full force. She tried standing up, but she could not, so she used her hand to close her ears. Unfortunately, she could still hear the sound. She became dizzy and passed out.
She woke up the next day with bangs on her room door. It was her mom shouting, "Mae, are you ok? C'mon, open the door, she continued knocking, while Mae tried to wake up properly and remember what happened last night. She screamed, "Mom, I'm coming." She walked up to the door, unlocked it, and opened it for her. Mrs. Harper, with disgust on her face, looked at her from her head down to her feet and exclaimed, "You are not ready yet, honey; it's your first day at school, and you do not want to be late. Get ready while I serve breakfast, and come join us downstairs. Do not keep me waiting." She goes downstairs, serves breakfast, and packs Imogen's hair properly. Mae comes downstairs looking innocent and charming at the same time. She wears a black leather mini skirt with a white bodysuit, paired with a pair of black boots. She eats a little, and they all get in the car. While Mrs. Harper drove them to school, Inside the car, Mae heard the sound again, piercing inside her head, this time with a voice that whispered, ”I see you." She became lost in thought; she could no longer hear anymore; it was like a power shortage in her ears. " Mae! Mae, we are at your school. Honey honey…" Her mom said as she grabbed Mae’s hand, and then Mae got herself. "Are you okay?" Mrs. Harper taunted. She kept a straight face and came down from the car. She walked into the school while her mom stared at her in disbelief.
Mae walked into the school’s hallway; she could read people's minds as they stared at her and Imogen before they parted ways. She could hear conversations from afar, but the voices became so loud that she bumped into a student. ”Oh my goodness, I'm sorry," she uttered as the voices subsided. The hallway was quite crowded and busy; the students could be seen going through their lockers, some casually chatting with friends while others headed to their different classes. It was 9 a.m. on the dot, the school bell rang, and all the students went into the classes, which left the hallway empty. Mae sat at the seat and desk close to the window, which had a perfect view of the school premises. She gazed out the window. Immediately, her class homeroom teacher, Professor Steve, came in, and the students greeted him. "We have a new student in our midst today; I want you all to welcome her. Mae, please introduce yourself," he urged. She stood up. "I'm Mae," she responded quietly. The class was expecting more than just her name. Professor Steve raised his eyebrows, then used his hands to say, Go on. "My family and I moved into Evermere; I was transferred from St. Lucas High," she said. After hearing St. Lucas High, the students gossiped, "OMG, she went to St. Lucas High; she is rich; that school is for the elites, and I heard everyone there wear luxurious brands to school." Mae heard their thoughts and chats. "That will be all. Thank you, Mae," professor Steve thanked Mae. He went ahead to persuade the students. "Treat her nicely," he said while he left the class.
Shy Mae sat alone and didn't try to mingle with anyone; rather, she pondered why she was hearing from a distance and could read people's minds. Now that the students were all alone without a teacher in the class, their conversation grew louder, and some hate speech towards her, she got frustrated, and she started clenching her fists and gritting her teeth. She lost control of herself and said, "You can end this; their conversations are silly, and you can put an end to that by using one of them as a scapegoat. You've got the power, Mae, and I can show you how." The voice in her head taunted, and she struggled for some time. As she stood up to leave the class, her book fell on the floor, and she bent down to pick it up. Then a student matched and pressed her hands. She gnarled without even knowing, her fist with claws and her heart racing. Quickly, she picked up the book and her bag and ran to the restroom while some of the students laughed. "Don't run; don't be like your mummy; good doesn't get you anywhere; kill; that's all you have to do to gain power, MAE MAE MAE!". The voice scolded.
