THE GROVE'S VOICE ( EP 2 )
July 25, 1957. Two days after that first blessing under the skylight, Rei can’t stop thinking about Marcello. He’s in math class, doodling the bird-and-twist symbol in his notebook, when his probation officer, Ms. Davis, taps on the window. “Rei. My office. Now.” His heart sinks. She pulls out a note from a teacher: “Rei was seen sneaking out of the dorm at 3 AM.” “Where were you?” she asks, her voice sharp. “One more strike, and you’re going back to your old school.” Rei’s about to lie when the door bursts open. It’s Marcello, holding a twig carved with the circle symbol. “He was with me,” he says, no hesitation. “Helping me with a tribal tradition — honoring my best friend who died. It’s sacred. You can’t punish him for that.” Ms. Davis raises an eyebrow, but something in Marcello’s voice makes her pause. She lets Rei go — but warns him: “One more time, and that’s it.” That night, Rei runs to the staircase. Marcello’s already there, looking worried. “I’m sorry I got you in trouble,” he says. Rei shakes his head and pulls him close — so close their foreheads touch. “You saved me. Thank you.” Just then, a loud rustling comes from above. Kael’s face appears through the leaves of the grove — weathered, with eyes that look just like Marcello’s. Rei jumps back, but Kael just smiles. “Son,” he says to Marcello. “I’ve been waiting to meet him.” He climbs down from the branches and walks over to Rei, holding out a small bundle of herbs. “Elara told me about the boy who’d find the twig,” he says. “She said he’d bring light back to the grove. She was right.” Rei takes the herbs, his hands shaking. “I… I don’t know what to say.” “Say you’ll stay,” Kael says, looking between the two boys. “Say you’ll help us protect the lost ones.” Rei looks at Marcello, who’s grinning so wide it lights up the whole staircase. “I’ll stay,” he says. And as if in answer, the grove’s leaves rustle into a clear, soft melody — a voice they can all hear now: “Welcome home.” ... The melody hangs in the air for a few seconds, then fades into gentle rustling. No one moves — they’re all too busy soaking in the magic of it. Kael lets out a breath he didn’t know he was holding, a tear rolling down his weathered cheek. “Elara always said the grove only speaks to those who truly belong,” he says, his voice thick with emotion. “Today, it spoke to three of us.” He climbs back up into the branches, pausing at the top to look down at them. “I’ll be watching,” he says, a small smile on his face. “And if you ever need me… just whisper to the leaves.” Once he’s gone, Marcello turns to Rei, his eyes shining. “Did you hear that? It said ‘welcome home.’” Rei nods, still staring up at the grove. “I’ve never felt like I belonged anywhere before,” he says quietly. “Not until now... Not until you.” Marcello steps closer, cupping Rei’s face in his hands. “You belong here,” he says, his voice soft. “With me...With the grove. With all of us.” Just then, the clock in the hallway chimes 5 AM — the sun is starting to rise. They walk over to the skylight, watching as pink and orange light spills over the grove’s leaves. Rei pulls out his poetry notebook and flips to a blank page, then takes Marcello’s hand and guides it to the paper. “Write with me,” he says. Together, they scrawl two words in big, messy letters: “Welcome home..” As they finish, a tiny pinecone falls from the grove and lands right on the page. They both look at it, then at each other, and burst out laughing — the kind of deep, genuine laugh that fills the whole staircase. “Looks like the grove wants to sign it too,” Marcello says. They fold the page and tuck it into the hollow where they keep the twig box, right next to Elara’s old notes. Then they stand up, hand in hand, and walk out of the staircase into the growing light of July 25 — ready for whatever comes next.. ..
